    Extract from Song of Achilles:
“Name one hero who was happy."
I considered. Heracles went mad and killed his family; Theseus lost his bride and father; Jason's children and new wife were murdered by his old; Bellerophon killed the Chimera but was crippled by the fall from Pegasus' back.
"You can't." He was sitting up now, leaning forward.
    "I can't."
"I know. They never let you be famous AND happy." He lifted an eyebrow. "I'll tell you a secret."
"Tell me." I loved it when he was like this.
"I'm going to be the first." He took my palm and held it to his. "Swear it."
    "Why me?"
"Because you're the reason. Swear it."
    "I swear it."

There was a real Achilles and Patroclus in history and, incidentally, they too were Greek. Most of us know Alexander the Great as the conqueror of much of the Ancient World. From Egypt in the West to India in the East, he consolidated most of the-then known world into a single empire whose scale and greatness rivaled that of Rome. His closest companion was a man named Hephaestion. The two were close in age and were virtually inseparable. In fact, they had grown up together and, as one court official later recalled, "knew each other's secrets." Hephaestion was also a skilled general and often fought alongside the king himself. So it was no surprise, then, that he'd be joining Alexander in a series of skirmishes against the Persians to vanquish them and, ultimately, absorb their lands into the empire.
While in Persia (particularly the city of Ecbatana in the North of what's now Iran), Hephaestion fell ill during a particularly lively season of Greek festivals and games. To this day, no one knows for certain how and why he became sick, but some believe it to have been typhoid. Regardless, he died sometime in October of 324 BC. He was just 32 years old.
According to both Plutarch and later Persian sources (especially Abolqasem Ferdowsi's 'Shahnameh,' or Book of Kings), Alexander's grief was "uncontrollable" and that "he neither tasted food nor paid any attention to his personal appearance," but instead spent all his time weeping or else keeping silent vigil over his beloved friend's lifeless body. Hephaestion was cremated and his ashes were scattered from atop the walled city of Babylon in present-day Iraq. He was given divine honors, a rite otherwise reserved solely for royalty, and was even bestowed with divine status by the Oracle at Siwa in Egypt. Alexander would himself pass away just eight months later (likely as a result of poisoning) and, even at that time, was still planning several lasting monuments to his fallen friend.
Anyway, I'm rambling. All that aside, thank you for this gorgeous playlist. I don't know if the Greek mythology and/or 'Somewhere in Northern Italy' aesthetic is a thing but, if it is, then this is a shining example of it. I appreciate the time, thought and dedication you clearly put into this. You've just gained a new subscriber.

This story is soo alike to that of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Could it be that the fictional Epic of Gilgamesh was also inspired by the actual real friendship of Alexander the Great and his friend Hephaestion? If I recall correctly it was the first Epic to ever exist. I'm not though which one came first, so sorry about that 😓

Reading the song of achilles as a gay man is an entirely different experience, where seeing love between two men is written simply like they’re just.. people. Well, as much as they could be, Achilles and Patroclus.
It’s a fantastic read, devastatingly beautiful, it touched my soul. I hope to find someone who could see me like Patroclus sees Achilles, and love someone as strong as Achilles loves Patroclus. My other half, my other soul. Someday.

*“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.* Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W.
I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow your party, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter your father’s house this evening or never”

it's currently 3am, I read this book in two days whilst putting on this playlist during the more emotional/nostalgic sections and marking every partciulay ghastly or sweet tuned page with a variety of colourful insults or loving comments, hehe, for future reference. I sometimes have a hard time letting my emotions out so I'm thankful for the melodies you put together which allowd me to enjoy this book in all its tragic beauty. This playlist was both humanising and comforting for me. You did a great job, especially with the order in which the songs came. Thank you

“He sees the thing in pieces. Men, coming down from the beach towards the camp. Odysseus, limping besides the other kings. Menelaus, has something in his arms. A grass stained foot hangs loose. Locks of tousled hair have slipped from the makeshift shroud. The numbness now is merciful. A last few moments of it. Then, the fall.”
“He snatches for his sword to slash at his throat. It is only when his hand comes up empty that he remembers: he gave the sword to me. Then Antilochus is seizing his wrists, and the men are all talking. All he can see is the bloodstained cloth. With a roar he throws Antilochus from him, knocks down Menelaus. He falls on the body. The knowledge rushes up to him, choking off breath. A scream comes, tearing its way out. And then another, and another. He seizes his hair in his hands and yanks it from his head. Golden strands fall onto the bloody corpse. Patroclus, he says, Patroclus. Patroclus. Over and over until it is sound only. Somewhere Odysseus is kneeling, urging food and drink. A fierce red rage comes, and he almost kills himself there. But he would have to let go of me. He cannot. He holds me so tightly I can feel the faint beat of his chest, like the wings of a moth. An echo, the last bit of spirit still tethered to my body. A torment.”

I just finished 'Song of Achilles' yesterday. Upon completing it, I just sat there for a good five, ten minutes, letting the feelings wash over me. It was such a beautiful, tragic, incredible story and one of the few books that really stayed with me. Naturally, afterward, I turned to RUclips to see what others thought of it, only to find that it's inspired a series of aesthetic playlists. I've listened to a number of them since yesterday afternoon, but yours is easily the best and my personal favorite. As the Greeks would say, "efharisto" (thank you) for this gorgeous compilation. It brings the story and characters back to me and makes me feel all over again.

Fun fact: The original Helen didn't got stolen from Paris. Actually it was her clone/idol. Hermes left Helen at Egypt. All that happened because of Hera and Aphrodite's beauty competition, where Paris had to choose the most beautiful between them,, however he chose Helen and the both goddesses got mad and jealous of her (Helen). So the war of Troy had no point of being held and everyone died unfairly, because of those two jealousy.. That sucks
