  • After getting this 77 Chrysler New Yorker 440 Big Block running again after being off the road for 19 years, and barely making it home in it we are ready to clean this jewel up and see what we bought. This thing is infested with ants and roaches so it is really going to be a challenging cleanup. Not to mention the size of this Bro-Ham. Let see what this thing looks like after my family gets done pressure washing it and cleaning the inside out. Make sure you watch till the end for a great Burnout!

It really makes my heart full and brings a big smile to my face to see how close your family is and the teamwork you have when cleaning up these dirty cars. The car is absolutely beautiful. Good ole American craftmanship that we had before the government thought they could do it better than the actual car manufactures. Now we have cars that all look the same and are made of plastic, rubber and tin cans that aren't worth half of what they want us to pay for them. I love each and every video that you put out. From watching a lot of restoration videos, cables in the engine bay can (and must) be easily replaced if they have been gnawed through or the insulation has perished. As I see it the next biggest threat is from the ones behind the dash and instrument cluster - and judging by the videos showing mouse nests in the glove compartment I would regard any evidence of that, as a warning to investigate behind the dash.
Restorers of 70s or earlier cars probably have it easy compared to ppl repairing newer ones who will also have to deal with bad capacitors in the engine management circuit board. A bad capacitor can cause as much damage as a rodent if it leaks. Shango066 has some videos in which he repairs that type of damage.

Greetings from Canada. I am 56 years old. My dad had a 1978 New Yorker Brougham. It was Dove Grey with matching interior, and grey vinyl top. My brother and I were teenagers and learned to drive in that car, and cruise in that car. You cannot beat a hard top for cruising. I recall it had pretty good torque and could get moving, nicely. Dad and the car are long gone. The front seat we put in his1974 Ford highboy 4x4. We use it as a plow truck, now. The seat reminds us of our dad, and that car. Enjoy the memories this car will make for you, and your family.

The burnout was glorious, I had flashbacks of driving my mother's Dodge Crestwood wagon 4Barrel 440 - I almost dropped the tranny doing a brake stand my senior yr of HS 🤣 I think she got about 7 MTG - it sat 8 which meant 13 or 14 of my girlfriends were cruis'n every weekend in that thing, everyone had to pay $8 pp
I really enjoyed the cleanup - incredible! Yes, new casings, a lil bodywork & electrical work (have a feeling that's wiring that got chewed up by the other "guests") she looks like a Sunday going to church car to me! Thank you for the laughs today!

I was brought home from the hospital in a 1975 Valiant Brougham 2-door Hardtop. Burgundy velour bucket seat interior, burgundy exterior, white vinyl top & wire wheels. My mom had fallen in love with the dealer demo car. Our Valiant had every accessory except A/C and the sunroof. 318, Power Discs, Power Steering, 727 auto, 3.21 Sure Grip rear. Cruise Control, AM/FM, rear defogger, Fuel Pacer and everything else that the Brougham package added to the car.
We parked it in 1991. I resurrected it in 1999, and drove it for about 6 months. Parked it, intending to do the body work (which at that time was negligible) but life got in the way. I wound up selling the car in 2009 to a dude who just destroyed it :(

I remember being in 6th grade and the lady who gave me a ride home after school was a cop who worked nights and also did the training for pursuit and evasive driving. One time me & my best friend Jon were in the back seat of her clapped out old blue Caprice & she asked us if she had ever been up on 2 wheels, we thought she was messing with us until she used a curb and got that blue beast up on both right side wheels for a full block. No seatbelts and the door latch was broken, never been so scared in my life trying not to fall out of the door. But after we got done screaming in terror we were too busy grinning ear to ear! Was reminded of that watching y'all blow around in the field having fun. Chrysler had the best seats in the business, btw. Ex-Chrysler employee I had as a customer for a few years had a 1 owner 1987 Fifth Avenue, blue/blue leather, plush blue carpet, like 20k miles (this was in 2002) and he let me drive it. SO freaking comfortable, but the steering was indeed "one finger heavy." Same fella had a 1-owner '71 Challenger 340 in his garage too, green with an auto, but said he'd never sell that either.

Amazed how well the car cleaned up and I look forward to seeing this on the road again.. As a fan of 1970s US crime series (Police Woman, Streets of SF, etc) i have ended up acquiring an appreciation of these massive land-barges. This particular model was usually driven by the villains BTW and for some reason the ones supplied to film companies never had good shock absorbers. Which might explain why they usually crashed or were crashed into or shot up.
I would never return to the days of carbs, coils, distributors and engine-driven fuel pumps, but would love to have one of these with an electronic ignition system, for my daily driver. But only with the original exhaust system and an understanding bank manager.
When you do get it going can you show the headlights being switched on with the covers retracting, as I have yet to see that happening. Same for the lights being switched off.
My current car is a Citroen C1 Mk2, only available in Europe and S.Africa from what I can determine. It is not much bigger than the old Mini and I can hand wash it with a sponge and a 10 litre bucket of water with car shampoo/wax followed by 10 litres of clear water. I expect your jet-wash machine used more fuel than the car used in the last 20 years lol. Wa-wa did an excellent job operating it.

I definitely think you need to fix her up some and see what you can get working. It looks to be in surprisingly good shape. Very little rust. The headlights probably didn't open because you had the vacuum unhooked. I know a lot of the old cars had vacuum operated headlights.

Hey Josh, the 440 & 727 will be a direct bolt in without having to make any modifications to the Motor Home`s (K-Member) or engine bay. The 440 big block engine was rated @ 375 HP & 480 ft lbs of torque. Many of the Dodge MH were sold with this engine & trans combo, I think it would make a great engine choice for your Motor Home so long as you do not mind ten miles per gallon.

It truly touches my heart to see one of these rolling pieces of artwork brought back to life. I am thrilled to see the appreciation from the younger generation towards these never will ever see mammoths again. Cars had a completely different meaning then. Next to your home, it was your second biggest purchase. Today buying a car is like buying a washing machine. All you get for your money today is a plastic fantastic Chinese computerized circus toy. I guarantee you that you can not leave a modern car for 19 years and have it wake to abuse as this one did. It is clear this car has heart and I would want it to be brought back to its former glory and pride of the highway again. I am sure everywhere you go you will get smiles and a ton of thumbs up. Just save your money for gas. I remember them to be extremely thirsty.

Watching u guys clean this car is just so satisfying. It took me back 23 years ago when I bought a 1984 white Ford LTD. It looked just as dirty as this one. I didn't have a power washer then but I scrubbed it all down inside and out. Let me tell u what that old grandma car cleaned up super. This old car need some work and lets see it run down the road again as a land yacht should!

If you plan on restoring the A/C, please note that this car takes nearly 4 pounds of R-12 (the stuff that depletes the ozone layer). Ironically, R-1234yf (which is what is used in cars built today) costs much more than R-12, which has not been produced since 1996!
To buy R-12, you must be EPA certified on the use of recovery equipment. However, many 1977 Chrysler New Yorkers have been converted to use R-134a (the replacement for R-12 that was used until 2018) and have had generally good results. If you decide to convert the A/C for R-134a, you may want to replace the standard condenser with a parallel-flow type and/or install an electric pusher fan in front of the condenser. This will likely improve the performance of the converted system.

Chrysler New Yorker Brougham. Brougham is one of those English words that you can't sound it out. It's not "bro-ham", it's pronounced "brome, rhymes with home". Excellent work on the cleanup job. I'm impressed that Ralph figured out the jack on his first go. I wonder if he would figured out how to lower the car on his own. Are you home yet?

My Dad built alternators at Chrysler back in the 1970's when i was a little kid. He used to tell me he was Superman and he just wore his Chrysler work uniform to fool the bad guys. When he'd leave for work sometimes he'd say he had to hurry and leave because there was a bus stuck dangling off a bridge, and he'd tug at his shirt neck as he went out the door leaving for work, as if he was about to expose his Superman suit and take flight as the door closed behind him.

My dad had a '78 when I was in High School. One night when I was driving home from a friends house I got hit head on by a drunk in a mid seventies Chevelle. The New Yorker knocked the Chevelle backwards, folded the left side frame rail all the way to the firewall and the whole car was about 5 inches shorter. The drivers door was almost to the end of the rear side window. I opened the drivers door of the Chrysler and got out like nothing happened. The New Yorker was wrecked but the passenger compartment was completely intact.
