I had a professor that made history class feel like story time. While he focused on Roman and Egyptian history, you do the same for Scandinavian and others. Thank you for making it fun again.
Oh that is such a lovely comment! I do have a lot of fun with history and I think it's more appealing if we can expressed it as a sort of story told around the fire. If we express it with enthusiasm and energy, people we retain a lot more of the information.
I agree, his passion for history and related subjects shines through and really not just entertains but makes recalling the material much easier. I'm very grateful for this channel.

This was an especially enjoyable video - I have two good friends that are Finnish; and i think that part of my family is too - - i seem to have physical characteristics that no one else has - but - my friends and i do - Anyway - i will certainly be sharing this for my friends to watch too.

I like to picture our first ancestors when they discovered fire and gathered around to tell their stories and exchange knowledge. Fire and stories was the great impulse that made early human rapidly evolve. The power of imagination transcends reality and helps us to free our minds to accept the innumerable possibilities of the spiritual. In Tyrion Lannister's words (geek moment): "What unites people?: Armies? Gold? Flags? - Stories. There’s nothing in the world more powerful than a good story."

I found it particularly compelling to hear about the stick put into the ground with the runes and horse head placed upon it as sorcery -you can't get much more traditional than that! It was used by in traditional witchcraft much later on -now l know where they got it! Compelling history lesson !☆☆☆☆☆

@ I do have a question that I am hoping you may have some insight to. I am doing research on Dougall MacSomairle, progenitor of Clan MacDougal in Scotland.
I have found his mother listed as Ragnhildr Olafsdottir, daughter of Olaf I "Morsel" King of Man and the Isles.
By accounts, I am seeing his father as Godred Crovan and potentially mother as Maria Haraldsdottir; daughter of Harald Hardrada.
I say potentially because I do struggle to find hard documentation on Maria having any children it besides some anecdotal mentions. What I did find, however, is in the Heimskringla it says "King Harald stopped but a short time in Shetland before sailing to Orkney, from whence he took with him a great armed force, and the earls Paul and Erlend, the sons of Earl Thorfin; but he left behind him here the Queen Ellisif, and her daughters Maria and Ingegerd."
Ironically, I can see Paul Thorfinnsson through the same link through Ragnhildr which does place her and Godred Crovan in the same place at the same time.

It makes a lot of sense what you say. Her portrayal as an evil witch could really have come from Christian influence. Because it sounds like her portrayal has some similarities to Jezebel, the "evil" wife of king Ahab, who had a lot of influence on him and who was the enemy of Elijah.

xcuse me, around 25:00 you explain how Gunnhild, through her sons, was responsible for the displacing of Norwegian nobility. How is that specific to her? Was that not the exact reason so many great families had fled Harald Fairhair and settled in Iceland?

Was talking about christians in the sense during the colonial period of Scandinavia, and lutherans as the branch of protestantism that had greater impact on Scandinavia on the post-colonial period.
