  • On the day that this was recorded, The Nayal Lodge in Las Peñitas, León, #Nicaragua had a fire started from burning trash in an open lot that caught the hotel and totally destroyed it. It's a major tragedy for our community and for the people who lived there and operated it. It has cost the community jobs and tourist capacity in a very small community that depends on every little bit of income. Today we talk about #trash and #fire safety here in Central America.

    I would love to see las Peñitas. Will go back and find them.

    So sad that the pets' lives were lost. I was hopeful it was just the roof that burned since the structure looked like it was cement.

    I fly into Central America - during dry season it is hazy everywhere from the smoke from wildfires, trash burning and field clearing.

    That is very sad.

    That's what I thought! It looked like the entrance to that housing project!

      Nayal is the entrance to a failed housing project, yes.

    Will the tourist community rise up against the government and demand chamge ??
    ! No burning trash in the yards !

      The tourist community is itty bitty and what the government will say is "build to proper standards and it isn't a problem." If the tourist rose up, I'd expect a crack down on dangerous construction rather than a push to change traditional large scale fire prevention.

    We were there 10 days ago for almost 2 weeks. This is so sad for Jose and Catalina. And poor dog Luna perished in the fire.

    It looks very dry right now. Up here in Canada due to forest fires they have signs on side roads that track fire hasard with a arrow that indicates risk level.

      Yes, it's late in the dry season here. So everything is DRY. And super windy.

    We were at Aaki while it was burning, we just noticed the smell of smoke when our hosts informed us. :(

    I take issue with the characterization of La Prensa...they may have jumped the gun here but it's reputable.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  5 месяцев назад

      Have you ever visited their website? It doesn't FEEL reputable, it has the look and feel of a tabloid. They block quoting and translation. There is a standard "look" used for tabloid news over real news because it caters to an audience. That's why Weekly World News and such, back in the days of print, looked different from the NYT or WSJ. It's not just to inform your potential readers of what they are getting, but also it draws in people hoping for tabloid style news. La Prensa, if you go to the site, is telling you that they consider themselves a tabloid and that's their target audience.
      If you go to Fox, you get a middle ground. It's tabloid-light. And that's how it is as well, full of misinformation, but within reason. But it's design is set to cater to those not prioritizing journalism at the top of the list. But not looking for alien spider baby news, either.
      La Prensa goes pretty far with their addition of the overlay to hamper being quoted or translated. Their desire to not be seen as a reputable source is pretty strong. I think if you really got a truthful answer from them... they don't seem to have the same opinion of themselves as you do of them. If I say they seem like a tabloid, it's because they made a point of giving themselves the look and feel of one. But I read multiple articles and there's no way to consider it journalism. It's a tabloid-esque opinion site, not a news site.

    Trash burning… Even people in rural Japan do it.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, absolutely everywhere. But most know not to do it in intense winds next door to ranchos :( They are lucky it was the hotel, the roof directly next door was a preschool.

    People just dont think when they do something. Burning something at 2 am at night?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog

      It was 2PM, in the afternoon. Middle of the day. Nighttime would have been way smarter.

    I feel so bad for the owners. Hoping they had insurance. Don't know if that's a thing here

      Insurance is rare here

      And not available for that type of roof is what I hear

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  5 месяцев назад +1

      It CAN exist, but it's crazy rare. But this is a rancho roof, so no way can you insure it. Plus it is a tsunami zone, so you can't insure there either.
