I also observed Lent and did the morning devotionals and all. I actually gave up purchasing books for lent. I agree with everything you said about Rebecca. I read it for the first time in October and enjoyed it. The Bluest Eye will always stay with me even though I read it years ago.
Thanks for watching, Lisa! I really enjoyed observing Lent more this year than I have in the past. I gave up sugary treats like baked goods, cookies, ice cream. It has been hard! Not buying books would be hard too. Only a few more days! ;) I’m glad you enjoyed Rebecca and The Bluest Eye. I’m still thinking about that book and I don’t think I’ll ever forget it!
I'm an idiot. When I first saw the thumbnail I was thinking wow she's coming out with her monthly wrap up already. The month isn't even over yet. Lol I watch the passion of Christ before I was a believer and I remember it being very brutal. Now as a believer I'm not sure that I could watch it. I thought about that often whether I should or not. Just hard to visualize what happened to someone I love. So yeah I get the processing thing. Have not read any of those books so I can't really comment on him other than to say you did a good job. Lol
Haha, nope, I'll never be on time with my monthly wrap ups and who knows when I'll get around to filming and posting the March wrap up. :D Yeah, I think that's what was the hardest for me about The Passion. It was watching in gruesome detail a figure that you have loved all your life be tortured and beaten in such a sadistic way like that. It was heartbreaking. There were great moments in the film, but not sure if it's one I need to watch again. Great acting, though - especially the woman who played Mary! I had to watch the behind-the-scenes videos before I went to sleep because I watched it late at night. Thanks for watching and commenting even if you haven't read any of the books I mentioned. :)
Wonderful video, Farrah! I was really interested in your thoughts about Fledgling. I've read a lot of Octavia Butler but not Fledgling, so your insights are really helpful. I am so glad that you had a great introduction to Toni Morrison. She is one of my all-time favorite authors. Thanks for this excellent video!
Thanks Pat! I really did enjoy Fledgling. It was a very interesting story when I really started to think about some of the themes going on within the narrative. I can definitely see why Toni Morrison is one of your favorite authors! I was so in awe of her writing. I can’t wait to read more of her books. :) Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks Reney! I love that we both read The Bluest Eye at pretty much the same time! I Iove this banned book project as it's helping me to read so many of these amazing books. :)
Oh no, I'm so sorry you have ot deal with allergies! That definitely puts a damper on Spring. Hope it's not too bad for you! Thanks for watching, Abel! :)
I loved the Bluest Eye. It is my favorite Morrison novel and I've read several. I loved Rebecca, but I understand not relating to the young wife as much now.
Glad to hear you loved The Bluest Eye too! It was so good. As for Rebecca, I felt so bad for her and her insecurities, but I know if it were me in her place (at that age) I probably would’ve felt so similar to how she felt! It was a great book and I’m so glad I finally read it. :)
Rebecca is one of my favorite novels ever! I really am interested in The Bluest Eye. The Passion of the Christ was tough for me too. I was reading from the gospels the crucifixion story on Friday. I only got to the part where they slapped Jesus in the face and I had to take a break. It’s just so heavy! But joy came Sunday morning!
I'm glad you liked Rebecca too! I know it's one that I will definitely re-read again. Yeah, The Passion is always a tough thing to read about and/or visualize. It's so hard to think of such an innocent and incredibly loving person being treated like that. It's very heavy, indeed! I hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter! :)
Butler is an author I really want to get to, i have a couple of her books on my shelves and need to prioritise them Toni Morrison's writing is amazing, i have the Bluest Eye on my list to read this year. I read Beloved earlier this year and it was one of the most hard-hitting books i have read
Thanks Matt, I remember you saying that you really enjoyed Beloved. I’ll definitely be giving that one a try at some point. Hope April is a great reading month for you. :)
I agree with you on not relating to the young wife anymore but I DID start reading Rebecca in my 20s so it’s still one of my favorite rereads. I also read The Bluest Eye many years ago so it’s due for a reread!
Glad to hear you enjoyed both of those as well! I have a feeling I will like Rebecca even more when I read it again now that I’ve analyzed it a little more. It was such a cool story :). That ending!
Fledging sounds like a mix of Blade and Anne Rice’s Claudia character but extra uncomfortable and heavy. I’m curious but maybe only for a majorly on sale copy. Rebecca sounds like an atmospheric good time! Sorry you haven’t been feeling well! Glad you’re finally getting better! Hopefully spring actually arrives soon and you can have some feel good sunny times!
Fledgling is definitely worth a read if you find it on sale! I did like it. The vampire stuff was interesting. It was surprisingly sexual in a way that was uncomfortable, but the themes were great. Rebecca was fun! Slow fun. :) Thanks for the kind words, I filed this video about a week ago and am feeling much better now! :)
I do want to try reading Rebecca one day... I also sometimes feel differently about characters/situations that I know would have been different in my younger years 😅
Definitely and I guess it's a good thing that we grow and change as we get older. The character in Rebecca could've been so relatable to me when I was younger, but I'm so glad I'm not that person anymore! :)
No worries on being gone for a while, as I did the same thing. ;p I have heard a lot of people talking about Octavia Butler. I haven't read any by her yet, but maybe someday... Never read Rebecca either. I have so many classics I would like to tackle, so not sure if/when I would pick it up. ;p I hope your March reading has been going great!! :)
I always think Du Maurier's book beginnings are so good, but it's been a while since I read Rebecca. Both Jamaica Inn and My Cousin Rachel have great starts though, and I love the first line of Rebecca. I remember the Hitchcock adaptation being good but I think everyone hated the recent mini series.
Good to know, I’ll watch the Hitchcock movie! I would like to try both Jamaica In and My Cousin Rachel at some point too. I remember you saying Rebecca is one of your mums favorite books!
Ha, nothing like a little seasonal depression, strep, kids being sick and watching the torture of Jesus to set the mood! Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it :).
Fledgeling/kindred are on my radar, although not sure when/if I will get to them. February is always a weird month in general, I tend to start a slump mid month which has kinda carried over. Still you read some great books once again.
I think I thought I was going to get to so many more books, but it just didn’t happen. Loved Kindred so much and even though I didn’t love Fledgling, it was still a good book. :)
@@bookstalgic I feel a bit like that about March tbf, even though i have enjoyed everything I have read pretty much, it's a month that has felt like a slog 😕
@@bookstalgic I feel the same going into April, I put it down to the change in seasons, I always feel unsettled around now. Fingers crossed as the world comes back alive one of your reads will Inspire you to vlog again, and if not, that's fine too
Great video! We have both also been feeling tired and lethargic, this can happen at the change of the season. We refuse to watch Passion of the Christ, my wife is Christian and this seems like unnecessary violence to both of us. From what we have heard, it just seems gratuitous and pointless. I will definitely be reading Rebecca at some time, not exactly horror, but sounds interesting.I really want to read Beloved, which is on my tbr.
Thanks Cliff! Thanks for your kind words about also having lower energy. So interesting about it possibly being related to the seasonal changes. Yeah, The Passion had one of the most prolonged violent scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I'm used to Game of Thrones, but this was very hard. The movie had it's good moments, wonderful acting and great special effects, but it was really focused on suffering and it was portrayed very sadistically. I can see why the controversy surrounding the movie arose when it came out. I have mixed feelings about it all, that's for sure! I have heard of some devout Christians making their kids (as young as 5) watch this and that really disturbs me. :( On a lighter note, I hope you enjoy Rebecca if you get to it. You'll like Mrs. Danvers. :) Beloved is definitely on my list too! :)
@@bookstalgic We have no intention of ever watching the movie as it just seems unnecessarily violent and gratuitous. Really, making their 5 year olds watch it is crazy and disturbing. I really want to read Beloved some time this year.
Yeah, it was a tough one to watch, that’s for sure 😭. And yeah, Fledgling was unsettling the entire book for that reason. Such a weird choice she made. I keep meaning to look into the themes more to see what was the point?? If there was one 🤷♀️.
