Yeah, makes no sense lorewise. They used humans from the real world and not warcraft humans. Warcraft humans are taller and have more muscle than we have. The average orc is in fact just slightly stronger than the average warcraft human.
Sniper or boom stick soldiers like range units always have close quarters weapons like swords but when in a defensive position a team of two soldiers this will include the shooter and the loader and most of the guns/boom sticks have small like beyonets and the boom stick soldiers have shields for protection and somewhere in the background in one scene a soldier is holding a boomstick fires and has a sword for the orc right in his face
To everyone that is calling to their lack of tactics and formations, if you watched the film you would understand the state they are actually in. They do their best with what they have while the rest of the Alliance sits idly by. This is essentially Leonidas, going against Xerxes. Shield walls and square formations are pretty good, especially with a few dozen Dwarven hand cannons to boot. It's a lighting raid to save their captured townsfolk and get outta there. Meanwhile Khadgar and Lothar are battling Medivh and his clay golem while he is chanting an incantation to help Gul'dan summon the rest of the Horde from Draenor. There is no time to prepare this grand invasion force and bring all this equipment, it's now or the Horde will swarm like a tide over Azeroth.
That is no excuse, going into battle without using any strategy, tactics or formations at all, especially against a superior adversary or at the very least a numerically superior enemy, is suicidal. Before going off, I realize this is a movie about a high fantasy game. I'm simply offering counter arguments here. First off, charging as they did in your typical Hollywood fashion, would render your troops tired before the lines even met, not a good start, doubly so considering the amount of plate mail they are wearing. Realistically armies would march towards each other while remaining in formation, usually followed by a skirmish phase and then a clashing of the lines. The Roman legions were known to perform charges but usually only when the lines were very close. Another reason armies did not charge at such distances was because it would break up the unit or army's formation. Formations aren't just there to look cool, they are integral to this kind of fighting. Fighting in your typical free for all Hollywood battle would be a massacre. Being in a formation allows the commander to know where his troops are as well as what state they are in, keeps them in order while also allowing for better communication. Try giving commands to your troops when they are running left right and center, it's already hard enough ordering a formation around over all the screaming, fighting and dying. It offers the troops better protection against enemy infantry and cavalry, boosts morale and usually keeps them alive longer. It also prevents enemies from getting in your rear... from the front. When the lines in the movie clash, you literally see orcs running past and into what looks like the middle of their blob (won't even deign to call it a formation) and start tossing guys around. From there they're in a great position to start stabbing guys in their backs, shattering morale and having everyone running for the hills. If they were smart and were in tight formations the orcs wouldn't be able to do that so easily, the Alliance army could use its advantage in range weapons to slow and dampen the charge of the orcs, then engage them in melee while the cavalry rolls around and does hammer and anvil strikes into their flanks or rear. Rinse and repeat, your troops advance over their dead while taking nowhere near as many casualties. If the orc moral breaks and they turn around and run, run 'em over with the cavalry.
Personally I think based on how little Alliance went to this rescue it should of failed. The Orcs would of overwhelmed them, especially with so many legendary fighters. I heard there is a second film finally being worked on. Not the greatest film ever but it's fun.
Idk, I think every battle where people rush dumbly into spears and swords is a shit battle. Once read that in the old days, people stopped before the foe and started stabbing. Chaos only happened when the cavalry or so broke the formation or whatever. I see it so much that soldiers run into what is certain death. Very unlikely.
@@CanadianLegionaire 1. I think we can completely discard the argument about troops getting tired. Based on the size of the equipment human troops use it is quite obvious that humans of this world have higher base strength and stamina than normal humans. 2. This is ignoring the purpose of the mission. To rescue their people to stop them from being used as fuel for the portal. Had they simply sat in positions outside the camp they would have been overwhelmed by endless reinforcements. Quick advance into the camp to secure the prisoners was a fundamental part to the success of the mission. Also as we can see, once they get into the camp the legion very quickly does assume formation.
@@Luthies 1) doesnt mean they wouldnt get tired eventually. Just the heat created by running such a distance in full plate mail and then fighting would accelerate the process. At the very least it would wear them out quicker. Also why do it? Why waste that energy even if they dont get immediatly tired from it? You're going into battle you want to preserve your troops strength for all long as possible or so a wise leader would at least. 2) Again, realistically that is no excuse. If this wasnt a fantasy movie they would have been butchered at the initial charge causing their mission to fail. You see how orcs penetrate deep into the alliance's "formation" when both lines collide. That would create chaos and destroy morale. You're right they did get in formation after they got to their objective and it seemed to be quite effective, how many more soldiers would be alive by that point had they advanced in formation, and how much more effective would they have been? In history, when one side simply charged a well formed opponent, who do you think won most of the time? I just want to point again that I realize that this is a fantasy movie based on a fanatsy game franchise. My arguments are solely for realisms sake and because I disagreed with the original poster. Also, movies like this has made many people believe that medieval warfare was actually conducted in such a fashion so I like to corrext whenever possible.
3:00 I would love a deleted scene where we see a merchant shit himself seeing that dead orc that got shot and fell through the portal pop up out and land on his cart

Many people don't understand that if the orcs were on the offensive, the humans will obviously use defensive formations using their guns. But the humans were the offense here, because they had no other choice. The humans knew they were going into a suicide mission to prevent further orcs from entering the portal by rescuing the people. Go watch the damn movie before commenting.
Also, the humans are in fucking half plate armor, even granting that the orcs are bigger and more dangerous then a human in a brawl when on even footing. They orcs *arent* on even footing, plate armor is terrifying. The orcs should be (and it appears were) absolutely demolished by such an enemy force.
Even when on the offensive, they still should be in a formation and trying to keep long distance as long as possible so that they can use their guns as effectively as possible, and should be firing in a volley, not at free will.
Plus the guns are a relatively new dwarf invention and the humans wouldn’t have any solid doctrine for them. One thing I don’t understand is why didn’t they just throw everything they had at the gate instead of only taking a small fraction of their army.

Yep, and if you go by Total War: Warhammer 1/2 as well, Guldan is very like Azhag the Slaughterer. However, The Empire would use actual effective and cohesive tactics against Greenskins rather than a free for all one on one melee. An earlier scene in the movie shows there are Dwarfs and Elves allied or friendly enough to the humans but I guess, unlike Warhammer, they're not enough of a thing or too good to help out when the world is threatened. Tbh I never got into playing WoW, I'm not keen on MMO's and the IP was originally supposed to be a Warhammer one, the deal fell through and Blizzard just robbed a lot of ideas instead.
Some humans got some epic melee kills at the frontal clash. At 1:08 the dude in the middle slashes the orcs belly killing him, and at 1:11 in the bottom middle another human kills an orc with a sword strike near neck, absolute badasses

The orcs are about 40 times stronger (estimating from the orc who tossed the horse earlier) than the humans, so it's the peak of insanity to fight them mano a mano. Arrows (with poison to boot), spears, trebuchets, longer bore gunpowder barrels and the like would be the stand-off weapons to use, not closing to fight face to face.

@@ther0ckstar70 I wouldn't say it was quite that bad. People universally agreed that all video game movies were bad up until Detective Pikachu came out and was followed by Sonic the Hedgehog. This one wasn't great, but it had cool things about it and it certainly wasn't anywhere near as bad as some of the past pieces of garbage based on video games that came out in the past. For example, I tried out the Silent Hill movie with low expectations since I was aware of what I just stated, figuring that it could still be reasonably entertaining if I set my sights low. I couldn't even finish it. It just became too boring.

While I still wanted more, this movie was still good as it was decent, I think. It definitely hit my marks with these battles. Still tho, I hope more movies about Warcraft happen. This one felt too short while the lore within is way too expansive, one movie would never been enough to fully explain everything that happens in actual lore
U know what i find stupid. If the alliance anticipatd a portal for the civilians to escape to stormwind, then uh why couldnt the alliance station reserve troops at the end of the portal so to reinforce the ones fighting the orcs. ?????
Fair point. Man i was really expecting the Stormwind forces to be far numerous, it is there territory to begin with. Plus there was a scene in the movie where the generals of the Alliance (Human forces) referred to their "Legions" being stationed at various locations
Finally, a fantasy production involving LATE medieval plate armor accompanied by period-appropriate firearms. Both LOTR and GOT universes should have at least had cannon and arquebuses.
Blizzard should've start their storyline to Arthas, he is the most recognizable, renowned and best hero in warcraft lore. Blizzard, i tell u, the cinematic in Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne is STILL the best of all cinematic you have made in Warcraft. Not because of quality, bad graphics compared you have made today but it IS Arthas , man!! We WANT it!
Yes, from the beginning but no one cares. Most of the gamers dont know about the lore. It is more about the story and downfall of Arthas. It is the HIGHLIGHT of all warcraft franchise
they did NOT follow the lore in the closest with this movie...so might as well just start @ Arthas. Only thing this movie has right about the original lore are the names of the characters and locations.
I agree, this movie sucked. They should have used less CGI and used real costumes like LOTR did, so much more realistic looking. And yes, they should have started with the Arthas storyline. No one gives a shit about WC 1-2. WC3 is the most interesting.
Arwho ? They started with the beginning and not by the middle of the story and it's good. It's not because a bunch of young " " "gamer" " " don't care about why and how Warcraft became a huge franchise that they should destroy the lore by starting in the middle and do prequels as fan service. It's like LOTR beginning with the last fight.
Me and my brother used to play Warcraft 1 & 2 when we were in junior high and then we watched this movie at the cinema as adults. Even though the movie bombed and we'll never get a sequel it was still a memorable experience

Imagine If that was all the soldiers including the ones inside the castle, just imagine if they all died because the portal closed. The castle would be left defenseless.
Yet, they would still get their asses handed to them by Durotan 😂 but TBF Durotan himself was large for an orc as well as his son and he managed to beat Doomhammer in several challenges
Yeah, it suffered from wanting too much action, or from having too short a runtime depending on how you see it. Not sure why they couldn't just extend it by an hour or so to flesh out the characters and world a bit. It'd have made it far better. Still good though.
I liked this part because I really love it when a king fights alongside with his soldiers. It just looks pathetic in my eyes when a king says big words in the back while soldiers do all the work 😑
I think a story about Arthas would be both better for Warcraft lovers and for people who don't know about Warcraft lore. I can even imagine the scenes, the first one would obviously be when Arthas rode with invincible in the snow and the horse damaged its leg and he had to put it down. Would be an epic introduction to the movie. And I would reckon it'd be a trilogy. First the rise&fall of Arthas, Second the war against the elves and just after he's been corrupted and the final being the WOTLK expansion but more so the end of it and the invasion of Icecrown. Still would be hard to translate into film. But this Warcraft movie was hard for me to follow even knowing about the Lore, I wonder what people who didn't know the lore thought about it.
that idea for the beginning shot would actually be perfect. but they should make it in 2 parts atleast, for the rise and fall of lich king. or a trilogy for the rise, reign and fall of the lich king.
I kinda rationalize it as orcs not being confident with swords, and she was also weaker as a half-orc so maybe they didn't give her any time with weapons
@@Haduuna_Wrur She would be weak for an orc, but not for a human. Basically, if an orc's strength is a 10 and a human is a 5, Garona would be a 7. But her being inexperience with swords is a decent explanation too.
Should’ve held their ground and let loose some volleys with those guns, then advanced in formation with shields locked. Discipline trumps brute force any day of the week, especially in a narrow valley like they were in.
Even if they did that they would still have been overwhelmed since the Orcs outnumber them AND are physically far stronger than them. If they didn't rush then Gul'dan would have enough time to summon even more reinforcements. Either way the humans still lose.
The idea was to disrupt the orcs in making a solid frontal line, they are physically stronger and had more reach than humans, so making a shield wall formation for the human is a bad idea that would just get them pinched and picked off on both sides
@@ericktamayo2570 Not in this case. The humans could've made a phalanx and had archers behind, which would've been much more effective as hundreds of arrows could be release every few seconds over a small area. Single shot weapons were obviously not as effective as the traditionally bow strategy, especially since bows can be reloaded in a matter of seconds. In war, time is money.
The first meeting of orcs/soldiers shows the orcs rampaging through human lines. But when a thin line guards the portal all of a sudden the orcs can't get through.
I think it would be tactically and logically better decision to ask elves, dwarves and other nations for help. Also it could be better if they used the portal to send more soldiers.
The sight of Alliance Foot Soldier's shooting large flintlocks was very satisfying to me, while I would've preferred to see the Dwarves with guns, this was an ok decision.
If this were like Total war, I'd assemble the riflemen into a firing line after the initial clash while the infantry forms a shield wall and slowly advances on the enemy.
Shield wall and slow advance won't work if your enemy are 7-8ft big bass bulky orcs, the idea was not to let them form up and pinched them. 1 full swing of an orc could literally throw out 5 men. What they did here is to pierced immediately into the center divide the full strength by making the orcs fight one by one on different direction get the objective, exit. they weren't planning to win. In the lore humanity had to use more dwarven tech more magic to beat the orc horde .

In real life they did actually charge with gun because gunmen were mixed in with the other troops you should research how battles were actually fought
@@CanadianLegionaire
Damn, comment section is, again, full of history, war strategy and wisdom-about-everything experts.

@@LuckySmurf humans could of easily one against those dumb brutes if they decided to use those guns better
@@Jack-io6vw Maybe. But keep in mind that the guns were new to humans, relatively speaking. So it's likely they didn't know any better by this point.

This is warcraft 1 tho
Some humans got some epic melee kills at the frontal clash. At 1:08 the dude in the middle slashes the orcs belly killing him, and at 1:11 in the bottom middle another human kills an orc with a sword strike near neck, absolute badasses

as an honorable if barbarian people similar to the Vikings. Violent yes, but some of them

Yeah but when your army is built on heavy infantry, may as well go full tilt against a horde of evil space aliens in melee.
According to wow lore Warcraft humans descend from the vrykul which themselves descend from titans so humans in Warcraft are stronger than rl humans the thing that makes the orcs have an edge is the fel corruption

Who knows. They probably thought they needed their entire army to help them escape in the first place.
On point! 👍
+Samuraiedge2 Yeah hmm but I'm pretty sure that the combined armies of the Alliance wouldnt amount to the few that attacked the Orcish emcampment.
Remember, this movie is before the Alliance was formed. Before then its just humans.
WC3 is the most interesting.
tbh the 1st movie should have started with the warcraft 3 storyline
Arwho ?
They started with the beginning and not by the middle of the story and it's good. It's not because a bunch of young " " "gamer" " " don't care about why and how Warcraft became a huge franchise that they should destroy the lore by starting in the middle and do prequels as fan service.

First the rise&fall of Arthas, Second the war against the elves and just after he's been corrupted and the final being the WOTLK
expansion but more so the end of it and the invasion of Icecrown.

The tactical advantage of it can still work, but you still would have to find a way to hold back an endless horde of orcs.
The idea was to disrupt the orcs in making a solid frontal line, they are physically stronger and had more reach than humans, so making a shield wall formation for the human is a bad idea that would just get them pinched and picked off on both sides
