$20,000 Pyramid - Billy Crystal's Winner's Circle Record

  • What makes this different than the other clips posted here of Billy Crystal's 26 second Winner's Circle record? The subsequent celebration from it was eventually used in the show's opening montage, which contains slightly more footage than is seen in the commonly circulated clip excerpted from that one Crystal/Sal Viscuso challenge episode (which is also where the bulk of this clip, and the brief laughter at the very start, comes from). The montage celebration was Frankensteined onto the end of that clip, and while this clip isn't really all that much longer in total, this can still now be considered the most surviving footage from this otherwise lost 1977 episode.

    There is no denying that Billy Crystal is one of the best Pyramid players, but why is it that the contestant never gets any credit for this amazing WC? The fact that she pulled THINGS IN A BARREL from one clue is pretty amazing. “Monkeys” could have been anything-zoo animals, primates, herbivores, British Invasion bands, etc.

      At the time, Barrel of monkeys was a very popular children's toy. Hence the reason Billy gave the clue in the first place.

      And that last one too! Old flowers, I would have said things that are pressed (in books). The perfect clue to me would be ‘bad lettuce’, but she got it first thing each time, they were both truly vibing!
      If I’d said crackers, and pickles, and maybe rainwater, and she still hadn’t gotten it, monkeys would have been a great fourth clue

    • @sm5574
      @sm5574 2 месяца назад

      I'm surprised she said it so quickly, but the point of giving a specific clue is to paint a picture. Monkeys/Monkees would not have been a good clue for those other things.
      Primates: Chimpanzees, apes, humans
      Zoo animals: Elephants, giraffes
      British Invasion: The Beatles
      But what's particular about monkeys? The phrase "barrelful of monkeys".

  • @ClassicalCentral
    @ClassicalCentral 6 лет назад +56

    Here was the perfect combination of a brilliant clue-giver and a brilliant contestant. Billy Crystal gave hints that were absolutely superb for each category, and the contestant was sharp enough to pick up on the numerous possibilities that a clue could give (Example, she says "Generals" and "Georges" for Billy's clue of "Patton," uses word association and the fact that the game is near the finish to think of "Things in a barrel" for the "monkeys" clue, "Numbers" and "Figures" for the "Eight" clue, etc). Notice also that Crystal does NOT talk over the contestant, since hearing her thought process allows him to gauge how close to correct she is. The listening portion of the game shows true mastery.
    And for those who insist on the fifth answer being rigged, Monkeys in a Barrel was a popular game in the 70s, and assuming that she was a mother, or knew someone who had children, it is not outlandish to think that she's heard of it.

    • @dabneyoffermein595

    Remember, the bottom row was cleared in 10 seconds. The middle row of two subjects cleared also in 10 seconds, leaving 40 seconds for the top subject. If Billy did not pause for 3 to 4 seconds, they would have had 37 to 38 seconds left on the clock, clearing the board in 22 seconds. Think about that.

    What is the contestant's name?
    This record is always talked about as Billy Crystal's, and while he did very, very well, she is the one that is incredible. 'Things in a barrel' just from 'monkeys'?!?!
    And to those that talk about Billy pausing on the last clue, keep in mind that his concern would be to get this all done in 60 seconds. He knows they have 30+ seconds, so I really think he isslowing himself down to give the best clue he can. I think he is mentally working out how to add more detail to "flowers" in a way that is going to be a valid clue.
    If this really was from 1977, that would mean that $10k would be roughly equivalent to $40k-45k in 2022. That is a lot of money!!!

      Fred Silverman wasn't aware of the network's practices until Richard Dawson, host of Family Feud, complained the networks use of erasing episodes of Password for his show. By then, it was two months later and he put an end to the network's aging wiping practice, but the network only preserved the full WC run clip which they used as the opening montage on later episodes, such as the one here for an upcoming Visculo/Crystal weekly battle around April 1979. They've been notorious for saving clips of WC wins that date as far back as the $10k Pyramid days.
