  • In this video I show you how to install the F10 M5 OEM shift knob in my E92 M3. I realize this video is a bit long, but there doesn't seem to be many tutorials out there in video format so I was very detailed.

Looking to fit this to my e46 M3. Can you vouch for the fact that it made the shifts more pleasing? Thanks!

Great video and highly recommended upgrade.
After almost 20 years, my original E46 broom handle was completely worn. This shorter ZHP shifter is much, much nicer than the original. And although it takes a few hours to refit the M5 boot in your M3, you definitely want to go through the trouble of putting in an illuminated OEM shifter... it looks awesome.
A few tips to add to the video.
First, don’t use a knife to remove the M5 boot from its frame. A flathead screwdriver to loosen the glue + pliers to remove the staples is all you need and you won’t have to worry about cutting your new boot.
Second, you definitely want to use binder clips to set the new boot on the old frame before gluing. The shape of the M5 frame and the E46 frame are very different, and the corners are a challenge. It took me a few tries to get the corners exactly the way I wanted them, and even so, I was left praying that the fit would be ok for all shifts. It ended up looking great with the stitching just slightly off of each of the front corners, but it did leave my 5th gear shift just a bit snug (that’s the one you’ll want to be most concerned about). Good news is that the boot is leather and has already started to stretch a bit after a few hours of driving.
Finally, when gluing the new boot to the old frame, glue will seep out through the staple holes. I used Gorilla Super Glue and almost glued my fingers together! Don’t use too much glue and clean the excess with a q-tip before handling or resetting the binder clips. After replacing the binder clips, let the glue set overnight. The next day you can trim any excess boot leather with small scissors.
I’m not typically the home or car repair guy, so I was a bit nervous about this, but you shouldn’t be. Overall, it was fairly easy, but it does take time... you can’t rush it. For me, it was a Saturday afternoon project while watching TV, and then 5 minutes on Sunday to trim and install. If you’re considering this project... GO FOR IT!

Is there a company that does this? I have a e90 m3 and want the illuminated zhp kno but I don’t want to do it on my own. Is there anyone that does this and send them out?

The easiest way to pull it out is the squat over the knob in second gear, with one foot on each side of the centre console. Grab it and stand up letting your legs do the work

I had to hammer that damn ring in after swiping the knob. PITA. But feels great in the end - shorter throws.

If you could do it over, do you think you would do the other method of cutting the knobs off? Cant decide which way to do it.

Unless a person has gone through these procedures with these shift boots, it's hard to understand how tedious the work is. When I finished mine there was one corner that to my eye was imperfect, and of course that's the only thing I focused on for weeks. You did a really nice job.

Why didn't you use the shifter from the M-Sport regular 3 series? That one is much shorter than the stock M3.
