Banana Bafana (the boys the boys) is the South African National soccer team. Springboks is the national rugby team (Springbok is also the national Animal of SA) and the Proteas are the national Cricket team (Protea is also the national flower)
I'm an All-blacks fan, and the Spring Boks are always the team to beat. There's so much history between the teams. Trevor is one of the best comedians out and straddles that line of comedy and though provoking narratives on the human condition. He's awesome.
The funny thing about the rugby players playing while hurt is that our Captain 3 weeks ago broke his nose, he needed surgery for it, but he put if off for a bit so he could play yhe next week, and played with that broken nose and he scored a try💪💪💪
Bafana Bafana is our pro men's soccer team, I think the ladies SA team is called Banyana Banyana fyi :) and I am a true Trevor Noah fan boy, been to every single stand up comedy show he has had in ZA :)

How Bafana Bafana remain so useless is a mystery to most South Africans. South Africa is one of the most developed countries in Africa so finance isn't an issue, & still they lose to countries that are well below the poverty line.

Also, there is a lot of alcohol consumption at soccer and rugby matches, so that is a huge contribution to poor sportmanship behaviours.
Rugby vibes surpasses any other emotion out there. I've seen 6.5ft hulks crying like babies when their team loses. At the end of the day, rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen and soccer is a gentleman's game, played by hooligans

the reason you dont know bafana bafana is because they normally come home from the soccer tournaments before they even start. they have the social profile of a hustler magazine. you know hidden away. its a good thing actually that social media came about because now the soccer players can actually send their messages to their wives and the wives will actually receive them before welcoming them back home, back in the day with physical letters, life was tough for them.

Springbok is the highest tier you can reach in any sports in South Africa, even though springboks are what our rugby team is known as. So if South Africa ever had to play NFL against USA our team would also be known as the Springbok team
You have the right idea basically before the ANC springbok was a title for making nationals but during the negotiations it was decided only the Ruby team gets to keep the name interestingly enough south african Airways also use springbok as their call sign so if you listen in on air traffic control you will immediately know the South African flights from now on

So this video of Trevor Noah didn’t age that well. When he made this video rugby was still predominantly a white sport in a South Africa that the Afrikaans people played mostly. Black people were way more into soccer. But things have change over the last 8 years or so. Rugby has gotten a big following from black people in South Africa since Rassie started coaching and Siya Kolisi became captain of the Springboks. Rugby is no longer a “white afrikaans sport” in South Africa, rugby and the Springboks are now supported by everyone in South Africa. All races and all cultures. It’s the biggest thing that unites South Africans. Soccer is still very big in SA. In player and fan numbers soccer is still bigger than rugby, but more the domestic league, not the national team. The national team has very little support because they are under performing, fans are not very public in their support and also South African soccer doesn’t have the same cultural/race diverse following as rugby in South Africa.

Not a big following, don’t exaggerate. Black people, the majority still associate Rugby with apartheid.
On the contrary, Rugby was big in certain black areas like the Eastern Cape, they just were not participating in mainstream Rugby because of Apartheid. That's why you see quite a number of Black rugby players are from that region. During the Transkei Bantustan "nation," it was more or less the national sport.

We don't have a mascot. But yes our rugby team is named after springbucks, Springbok in Afrikaans, a type of buck found in the wild in SA and fast and strong and can jump very high. Very beautiful animal

Not sure where you are based, but if you ever get the opportunity you must go and watch a Soweto derby at the Kalabash in Soweto. Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs. Seen a few, have my own Makarapa hat, a mining helmet with cut out motives... Amakozi for life. Get a local to go with and you will have the best time of your life. Just make sure you shout for Kaizer Chiefs!

I don't believe his portrayal reflects what's currently going on though. Black people used to not care about rugby... They're on board now, lemme tell you, even lay people. Since the world cup I can't remember how many times I've seen the Ref blow for a penalty cos of a steal or a ruck infringement n I see people in the stands looking around like "how come you guys are cheering now, but the last time he blew you were mad?!

The quota system is if course reality in SA rugby. The prescript of the SA government and SA Rugby is that 60% of the Springbok team (players, coaches, support personnel) have to be people of colour by 2030, despite the fact that players of colour make up less than 20% of the country's total player pool. The team has even had a quota "captain" for the past five or six years. But then again, our racist government doesn't care about merit, also not in government. Hence governance in our country has completely, totally and utterly nosedived since 1994 when the never-elected, Russian-backed, former terrorist grouping, the Communist African National Congress (ANC), came into power. But then again, who cares? The woke, new order "world" is not interested in the truth either.
Bottom line rugby = white sport and soccer = black sport in South Africa, or that's how it was during apartheid, after apartheid soccer never picked up, but rugby stayed on top even with quota players forced into the team early on, today we don't need a quota anymore as we have way too many brilliant black players, infact i think sooner than later we are going to need to implement a white quota, and I'm still waiting fir a Indian rugby great 😜
