South Africa is the only country in the world whereby u find 8 people sitting together speaking different languages but understand each other very well! That's what we call diversity!❤
The funniest part about the Joke from Trevor, is that the entire anthem is actually just one big prayer to God to bless the country, to bring peace and prosperity, and to keep the country safe and away from wars and conflict. So, it actually puts a massive contrast to what the song is actually about.
Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (God Bless Africa) Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo, (Raise high Her glory) Yizwa imithandazo yethu, (Hear our Prayers) Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo (God bless us, we her children) isiXhosa and isiZulu Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso, (God protect our nation) O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho, (End all wars and tribulations) O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso, (Protect us, protect our nation) Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika. (Our nation South Africa - South Africa) Sesotho Uit die blou van onse hemel, (Ringing out from our blue heavens) Uit die diepte van ons see, (From the depth of our seas) Oor ons ewige gebergtes, (Over our everlasting mountains) Waar die kranse antwoord gee, (Where the echoing crags resound) Afrikaans Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land
National Anthem Translation: Xhosa Part: Lord bless Africa, May her glory be lifted high. Zulu Part: Hear our prayers, Lord bless us, your children. Sotho Part: Lord we ask you to protect our nation, Intervene and end all conflicts. Protect us, protect our nation, The nation of South Africa, South Africa! Afrikaans Part: From out of our blue heavens, From the depths of our seas. Over everlasting mountains, Where the echoing cliffs resound. English Part: Sound the call to come together, And united we shall stand. Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land!
Hi. Born and raised South African. I learned the meaning along with the words of our National Anthem. It is actually partly a Hymn, and very beautiful. I don't like that they took out the part that means "Come, Holy Spirit". They should have kept that part. And the Afrikaans and English part, they should have took the 4th verse of the old National Anthem, which is also a prayer. Just my opinion.
Thanks for the translation, I think I better start learning it now. The Afrikaans and English parts reminded me of apartheid trauma. I guess time heals.
@@SoniaJbrt Yeah, a lot had to be compromised from both anthems. The hymn was composed in 1897. Originally Xhosa, then it became a pan-African liberation song and different versions of it were later adopted as national anthems of 5 African countries. As it is right now it's the third longest national anthem in the world. That "Descend O' Holy Spirit" part really would have been nice.

The reason especially the older people don't know the anthem as well as they maub should, is that they did not grow up with that anthem and when they were at school, they did not learn an African langue. Now every primary school child learn the African language of their region, eg Zulu in KZN

A very nice spin on the anthem, as much as people now want believe in its exclusivity to South Africa, it wasn't that to begin with. With the beginning of self-awareness of the black Africa most revolutionaries didn't talk or think in terms of their part of Africa. Such revolutionaries like Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Milton Obote Jomo Kenyatta, and Patrice Lumumba to name just a few. The thrusts in their speeches wasn't regional, but Africa in it's entirety. I'm saying all this to clear the context of the now South African Anthem, written by a South African, by the name Enoch Sontonga (not sure of spelling) So, I remember it as the national anthem of Africa and taking pride in it. The then black Africa intelligencia was about the wholeness of African populace, not the "Partition of Africa" . So Nkosi Sikelela Africa was the most sung by the revolutionary black Africa with heartfelt pride

Yeah
I was there, wat a night😅
God bless Tina.
