    Warriors (Warrior Cats) is a series of novels based on the adventures and drama of multiple Clans of feral cats created by Victoria "Vicky" Holmes. The series is primarily set in a fictional forest, and later by a lake, in which fights and disputes over territory often occur between the groups: ThunderClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and SkyClan as well as StarClan, the Dark Forest (The Place of No Stars), and BloodClan. Published by HarperCollins and edited by Working Partners (now owned by Coolabi), Warriors is written by authors Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry, as well as others, under the collective pseudonym Erin Hunter: beginning with their first book "Into the Wild" in 2003. Tui T. Sutherland, another writer for the series, also went on to create the Wings of Fire novels and manga. In 2021, an official ROBLOX game by the name of "Warrior Cats: Ultimate Edition" (WCUE) was released finally growing the franchise beyond the original books with much success on TikTok. The Warrior Cats fandom is deeply rooted in animation, art, drawings, OCs (original characters), ships (shipping), animation memes, and various Warrior Cats PMV (s), AMV (s), animatics, and Warrior Cats MAP / MAPs (multi-animator projects) among other forms of animated media. Some of its most popular characters include Firestar (Fireheart, Firepaw, Rusty), Graystripe, Ravenpaw, Sandstorm, Spottedleaf, Cinderpelt, Tallstar, Jake, Swiftpaw, Brightheart, Cloudtail, Bluestar, Yellowfang, Snowkit, Mapleshade, Leopardstar, Crookedstar, Hawkfrost, Tigerstar (Tigerclaw), Ashfur, Sol, Scourge, Mothwing, Crowfeather, Feathertail, Frecklewish, Squirrelflight (Squirrelstar), Leafpool, Bramblestar (Brambleclaw), Jayfeather, Hollyleaf, Dovewing, Ivypool, Lionblaze, Rootspring, Shadowsight, Bristlefrost, Nightheart, Sunbeam, Frostpaw, and Alderheart. And for more than 20 years, its fame (and respective infamy) has brought fans and countless readers alike together from across the world.

    What i got mad at, was when Yellowfang was pushed into it, AFTER she had been made a full warrior, and after she had been with her mate and became pregnant. like immidietly after she went to the moon pool she felt the pregnancy pains that week. we know she hadnt been with her mate since he was mad at her after she chose the medicine cat life. so she had to go in secret, and have her kits and go through all of that stress which most likely killed one, made the other weak and brokenkit severly undernurished. its almost like star clan sets themselves up with villains to oppose them. but great video, i might try to look into her more, she seems cool^^ thanks man!

    I mean, my immediate answer to “should medicine cats have kits?” Is YES. Moth flight was just a new warrior when she had her children, I’m not even lying.. it’s terrifying, she was just about..12 moons old?
    I’m not saying “oh my goodness how dare her have kits sooo irresponsible,” I’m saying of course she couldn’t handle that she was so incredibly young. She really was struggling as you said, she was like a teenager in human years, and I really do think that this rule really is just kinda superimposing mothflight’s life on every other medcat and for no good reason. Anyways this has gotta be one of my fav vids you’ve ever made ngl

    I always found it weird that the justification is that medicine cats will favor their mates and kits when it comes to their healing duties… ignoring the fact that most medicine cats have family members anyway. They have parents, littermates, other more “distant” relative as well. It also ignores the fact that medicine cats have friends too. No matter what the healers of the clan are going to have family members and cats they’re closer with than others, and no medicine cat in the books is shown to give preferential treatment to those cats.

      They did a good job at making us feel bad for Moth Flight. She really did have it absolutely horrible. Nearly everything that could go wrong in her life *did*, but one person doesn't mean that's how it is for everybody. And I find it absurd for them to purposefully go out of their way just to rub it in the face of another character in the same book too. They seriously need to re-think this if it's ever going to have a meaningful pay off whatsoever.

    Kind of tangentially related somewhat, but I never understood why the medicine cat/healer and warrior “professions” are so binary. Apprentices and warriors should have some basic knowledge of herbs and healing, just in case a medicine cat is unable to perform their duties in the case of sickness, having kits, dying w/o an apprentice, simply being away, etc.
    Cats like Brightheart and Briarlight have been shown to have basic knowledge of herbs due to spending time in the medicine den.
    It also has more practical uses. Warriors and apprentices can help stabilize an injured cat without wasting time trying to track down a medicine cat. Medicine cats are more experienced and dedicate most of their time to healing, so the position should stay, but everyone should be taught healing basics.

    • @Hawkkz
      @Hawkkz  2 года назад +38

      Coincidentally, it's actually only been medicine cats who have had any sort of cross-profession training outside of special circumstances like Brightheart, Reed Tail, etc. ShadowClan allegedly trains (or use to train) their medicine cats to fight as warriors (though that's not exactly true anymore w/ Shadowsight), Leafpool has practiced battle moves w/ Cinderpelt, and I even think a handful of medicine cats know a fair bit about how to hunt too (outside of obvious examples like Micah). I definitely agree that warriors should receive more basic medicine cat training, though. It would make things a little more interesting and it would actually make sense practically!

    I think it's weird that medicine cats can't have kits but leaders can. Like, everyone should be allowed to choose whether or not to have kits, no matter what role they play in the Clan, but it seems hypocritical. Many leaders recieve a life for a mother's love, with the reason being that they should love every cat in their Clan like their own kit. Medicine cats also have to care for the whole Clan, but it's framed as if they won't be able to care for everyone the same if they have their own kits.
    One super edition (won't go into detail or name the book because I don't know if you've read it) claims that it IS a rule that (specifically) female leaders can't have kits. This is not true, no where in the warrior code is there even a rule LIKE that. It just makes me think about the way the rule for medicine cats should be applied to leaders, according to the logic of the rule.

      To be fair in Leafstar’s case (I may be remembering wrong) there was the added element of the clan being newly formed and the possibility of it falling apart was present. It made sense for her to be worried if she could manage both navigating leadership of a newly formed clan AND having kits.

    • @Hawkkz

      If that last thing is about what I think it is: I can't lie, I slept through basically the entirety of SkyClan's Destiny, put it down, and read the synopsis off the wiki after they were literally going to get up and leave just to help Stick out or whatever LOL. I remember basically nothing about it b/c I was so furious that they ruined Leafstar's book by making like 90% of it about some stupid background character no one cared about, so you're good. Sorry if I'm wrong though.
      Oh yeah, no; it's entirely hypocritical. The whole rule is founded off of some of the most unrealistic and inapplicable standards they've ever imposed. Moth Flight's life was absolutely difficult and it at least makes sense why she would want to give up her kits, but how they're applying that to everyone else is incredibly ridiculous. It's so obvious that they just couldn't think of any other reason for this stupid rule to exist, so they just decided to stuff it into this book to get the fans to stop asking.

      @@Hawkkz Yeah I was talking about SkyClan's Destiny. Echosong scolding Leafstar for maybe having a crush on Billystorm (which I didn't even notice until she mentioned it), as if Leafstar was breaking the rules, really frustrated me because it wasn't a rule. I brought it up in a Warriors discord server in a rant and that's when I realized how similar that idea was to the one that medicine cats can't have kits because it would "distract them". Deputies and leaders have kits often (however it's more often male leaders having kits during their leadership because the silly cat books are not sexist /s) and their Clan does not think they can't handle the extra responsibility (unless you're Bluefur or smth).
      I just repeated the point didn't mean to do that.

    Wish they'd have a TEAM of medicine cats, or at least some more warriors that knew herbs like Brightheart did for awhile, that way, if a medicine cat wanted to start a family, they'd have some cat to cover, like how actual doctors have a team and maternity leave n' whatnot. For shecats, once the kit is weened off milk, theres no reason their mate can't watch the kits of there's important medicine cat duties to attend to, and for toms they can visit during down time, also in the books kits have also been shown to hang with other queens and warriors when the parents are busy as well, or the lots just play with each other. They should definitely get at least the CHOICE of whether or not they want kits, especially if they have tightknit family/friend support system that's willing to help.

    When I first read mothflight's book my first thought was that the Erin's had made it situational for a reason. I feel like on some level we were always supposed to be on the side of leafpool and yellowfang when they broke the code and had kits and thought this super edition was setting up the hypocrisy of this code being unmasked like if a med cat and a leader had kits and the leader was super supportive of it and wanted their kits to be known openly challenging starclan when it's found out why this rule was implemented. And to some extent they are changing the warrior code but that payoff for this book situational set up for med cats has yet to be payed off. I think another way the Erin's could have done this ( this is by no means perfect just another take that even I think needs workshoping) is making mothflight choose not to have kits. Starclan didn't force the clans to have medicine cats mothflight pioneered the position and after seeing the benefits other cats who also felt like outcasts and wanted to heal instead of fight followed suit taking from her methods mothflight is looked up to as this mother of medicine and after she dies without kits everyone agrees to follow in her paw steps. Over time what turned into their choice became a written law. So we can again still side with leafpool and yellowfang but also see the culprit was the grand game of telephone.

      When Moth Flight was introduced forever ago (though this is, of course, retconned now mind you), the rule about medicine cats not having a mate or kits had nothing to do with her iirc. While I loved her Super Edition, it felt like such an unnatural conclusion to an otherwise amazing read. And unfortunately, the only "pay off" from it so far seems to just be an easy way to create drama and develop plot points. I would love for them to get rid of the rule eventually (especially with what's going on in A Starless Clan), but I highly doubt they'll ever touch the medicine cat code again. I hope they'll prove me wrong, though.

    I feel like this was a rule just made for drama, and as many people know Moth'flight was very young, but also the system wasn't created yet, so in the end it be a 6 moon break if anything(It could cause trouble if it was leaf-bare) but we also have adoptive/foster mothers and the medicine cat could just do what Squirrel'flight did visit but not nurse them.

  • @allura9163
    @allura9163 2 года назад +17

    I feel like the rule made sense in the early generations, when the queens hadn’t yet started helping the other queens take care of the kittens. Because if the medicine cats mate had died, or was busy with their own duties, you’d have unsupervised kits running around causing trouble, getting hurt or killed, etc.
    But as time passed and queens started helping other queens, I feel the rule should have changed with the time but by then it had become tradition and well… why change tradition?
    But the current generations of Clans should definitely change the rule because really, even if the medicine cat and the other parent are busy, there’s usually always 2-4 queens in the nursery, not counting she-cats who are too old for duties now and choose to help raise the kits. That wasn’t a thing that happened in Moth Flight’s time, and she couldn’t know that it was going to change as time went on. But once it did, she should have made a point to visit the leaders and medicine cats and propose the change. Instead she stubbornly stuck to the fact that she was right about how difficult it is to do both and tried to use the mess with the Three to vindicate her opinion.

      Absolutely. It all just circles back around to Moth Flight simply being from a different time and having to weather exceptional hardship. So much has changed and I pray that they finally pay this some attention in A Starless Clan because it sorely needs it 🙏

    When I first read the books when I was a kid, I didn’t really have too much of an issue with the whole medicine cats not being allowed to have kits thing. I grew up in a religious household and also knew about nuns, so the idea of someone saving themselves for God, or their religion in general, wasn’t out of place to me. It was sort of reinforced to me that it was bad for medicine cats to have kits, since it seemed like medicine cats (or cats breaking the warrior code) were cursed in some way when they did it (YellowFang giving birth to BrokenKit, BlueStar’s Kit dying).
    The moment when I started feeling “weird” about it was with LeafPool. As far as I remember, LeafPool didn’t show some sort of favoritism towards her kits, so there was never the problem with maternal instincts getting in the way. She did a fine job taking care of her clan. She wasn’t distracted or anything! Everyone learns that she had kits and she has her title as a medicine cat stripped, but why? She’d been taking care of her clan for years “despite” being a mother, so now all of her experience means nothing?
    And probably the worst of all for me, was the realization that everything bad that happened to LeafPool after that had no “curse” from StarClan. It’s a bit weird, but my only REAL justification for medicine cats not having cats was that StarClan would curse them, but nothing that happened to LeafPool had anything to do with any sort of “cat magic”. Her own father fired her for the sake of saving face, her clan that she’d known her entire life completely lost respect for her, and the surrounding clans lost respect for ThunderClan, despite the fact that she did nothing wrong. And it was at this moment that I realized that there really wasn’t ANY reason why a medicine cat shouldn’t have kits. The clans say “no”, because StarClan says “no”, but StarClan hasn’t actually given a good enough reason other than “it would be too hard to focus on your kits”, but aren’t the clans the image of the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child”?
    MothFlights Vision solidified why that rule makes no sense to me, SquirrelFlights Hope solidified my unironic hatred for StarClan, and The Broken Code solidified why I hate the fact that the cats worship their horrible ancestors despite the fact that all they do is cause them trouble.
    I was so angry in SH when they gushed about how happy BlueStar was in StarClan, now that she could be with her out-clan lover, but all I could think was, why wasn’t she allowed to be happy when she was alive? LeafPool wanted to be in StarClan so much, despite the fact that they attempted to demonize her for something they TOLD her to do! I know it’s a bit of a meme right now, but moments like these REALLY make the clans feel like a cult.

  • @pistonfists
    @pistonfists 2 года назад +8

    I can possibly understand the idea of like, not wanting your medicine cat to put themselves in a position where they could die if they don't have an apprentice (have seen quite a few queens die over time from kitting over all the stories) or something like that, but a flat ban on it entirely is strange honestly. I agree that a medicine cat's duties are important and they have to be able to tend to them no matter what, but like also EVERYONE gives their life to the clan. They should be able to enjoy everything there is to offer too.

    • @Hawkkz
      @Hawkkz  2 года назад

      Exactly. Even without the fact that, as of the most recent arc, every clan has more than 1 medicine cat now w/ only WindClan and RiverClan still having apprentices, a complete ban is just completely unrealistic. Yes if the medicine cat is the mother and they need to feed their kits, they're going to be unable to take care of their clanmates in the same way that they could before, but if there's another queen who's also nursing or once their kits have been weened off milk (which only takes about a month anyway) that's not going to matter. Plus, it's not as if they're constantly feeding their kits or if they even *need* to have kits at all anyway. And how does their family not constitute the same "bias" that they're talking about? It's just so ridiculous for them to tell someone that they don't have the choice to choose whether or not they want to be in a relationship for such a contradictory premise.

  • @Kitethorn
    @Kitethorn 2 года назад +3

    My guess is, back in Moth Flight's time, they didn't have the awareness that Clan members should help queens raise kits. In Into the Wild Whitestorm or someone mentioned that this responsibility was shared by she-cats, but in her book no one seemed to actively try to help with her kits, and Moth Flight didn't blame them either. So maybe, just maybe, this idea was developed only long after Moth Flight. That's what made Moth Flight feel so stressed, which led to the existence of this rule.
    Therefore, I think this rule is so realistic. We in real life have so many rules that are created in a specific historical background, and when that background changes, people are reluctant to adjust the rules, resulting in much suffering. The historical background of early Clan period has changed --queens don't need to raise kits alone anymore-- but the rule remains, causing so many tragedies with Yellowfang, Leafpool, etc. That's why we praise revolutions. That's why we need revolutions. I wish to witness this significant change.

    I feel like medicine cats should be allowed or have the choice to take a mate and have kites, but mostly if there is another medicine cat or at least well-trained apprentice. That way the medicine cat isn’t like “abandoning” their clan for kitting or raising kits. The clan would still have another medicine cat to rely on. Either way this rule makes no logical sense as it stands considering family ties are all around warriors and medicine cats anyway 💀

It seems to be the most broken rule, if Starclan knows that most cats don't follow it anyway then why have it? The part that made me angry was when love is cruelly taken from Acorn Fur when she was just starting to fall in love. Quiet Rain then berates her for thinking she can be a mom and have a career. This rule makes me mad and this ending makes me mad. Female leaders exist and can have kits and they have similar duties in regards to caring for their clan that a medicine cat has. Man this rule is useless.

    I honestly think that the rule makes it harder for the medicine cats to do their job. Like, imagine all the time they could have spent taking care of the clan or getting adequate rest, instead of sneaking and planning how to hide their relationships/kits from the clan. Imagine if Yellowfang died trying to have her kits in secret with no help? There would be no medicine cat at all. Another medicine cat from another clan could also come and help short term in dire need! It happens all the time practically for other reasons!
    Imagine if this rule applied to real world doctors. We would basically have a huge lack of essential workers because hardly anyone would agree to the terms, or we would have doctors being sloppy with their jobs while trying to hide their children and relationships from the police. Both are terrible outcomes with no benefits.

Flywhisker has it too and it was a struggle for Twigbranch to teach her because it was something that the cats probably don’t know much about, or if they did they don’t know anymore. Sure we may not see Fly again because she became a kittypet but it shows that the writers at least want to give their characters disabilities, and ones that other characters have too so they aren’t going “but we already have a cat with whatever disability” when thinking about disabled characters.

But what always stuck out to me is how it seems like a lot of medicine cats don’t really? Choose? To be medicine cats. Yellowfang, Jayfeather, and Cinderpelt all come to mind. Through one reason or another they were all basically forced to leave their warrior training and become medicine cats instead. Now that I think about it, the strict rules about not having families of their own probably contributed to a majority of cats turning their nose at the idea of being a medicine cat. I’m sure people will point out all the characters that love being a medicine cat or willingly chose to be one but I’ve just forgotten most of these things with time. Just coming from someone who’s currently studying medicine, who read these books as a kid one of the things that stuck with me is how it seemed like every character made it seem like being a medicine cat was basically a death sentence lol

    Just a bit of a hot take, but I kinda figured the rules about medicine cats not having a mate or kits was one of those rules designed with good intentions originally, but like with many real life rules, it didn't age well with changing times and by the time of Arc 1 and onwards, it had become obsolete where it was previously useful. As for why it's still touted as "necessary" past Arc 1, that largely comes down to traditionalist, conservative clan cats that are basically falling back on the age old excuse of "well that's how that's always been" without putting any thought into how lame an excuse that is. In all, how the rule is handled in lore is fairly realistic in my opinion, especially in how this rule lost usefulness yet continued to be used well past that out of habit and dogma in the clans.

    Personally, I like Moth Flight in Moth Flight's vision. I just didn't like her in Squirrelflight's hope. I mean, she yells at Leafpool for breaking her rule in the medicine cat code when Yellowfang and other cats did the same thing. Not only that, but StarClan themselves told Squirrelflight that she had to keep the kits and lie to her clan. Then at their trial they "forgot" about it and blamed both sisters for Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf. (That trial still kinda upsets me, it made no sense imo. Sorry to those who like it.)
    Personally, I think if the medicine cat is in a supportive clan who will be willing to help raise the kits and if the medicine cat has a fully trained medicine cat/nearly finished training medicine cat apprentice, and they feel comfortable then thr medicine cat should be able to choose to have a mate and kits. So yeah I agree with your video, another W for the RUclips algorithm.

      I know seeing all of this stuff is crazy, but there's only like maybe 12 books outside of the main arcs that tie directly into the main plot. There are definitely still A LOT of books, but the rest other than these are optional. Here's my personal recommendation on how to read them:
      • The Prophecies Begin (1st arc) [I recommend revisiting this series first]
      • Firestar's Quest
      • The New Prophecy (2nd arc) [this one is horrible btw but it's necessary]
      • Power of Three books 1-3 (3rd arc)
      • SkyClan and the Stranger
      • Power of Three books 4-6
      • Leafpool's Wish (optional but provides more insight)
      • Omen of the Stars (4th arc)
      • Ravenpaw's Farewell (optional but mentioned in the next book. It's also just a really good read in general tbh)
      • Hawkwing's Journey
      • A Vision of Shadows books 1-3 (which is technically the 6th arc b/c the 5th arc is the prequel series)
      • Pebbleshine's Kits
      • Tree's Roots
      • Onestar's Confession (optional but provides more insight, though not yet released)
      • A Vision of Shadows books 4 & 5
      • Tigerheart's Shadow
      • A Vision of Shadows book 6
      • Tawnypelt's Clan (optional but mentioned in the main series iirc)
      • Squirrelflight's Hope (optional but provides more insight)
      • The Broken Code books 1-4 (7th arc)
      • Graystripe's Vow
      • The Broken Code book 5
      • Daisy's Kin (optional but mentioned in main series)
      • The Broken Code book 6
      • A Starless Clan (8th arc) [not yet fully released]
      These aren't completely in chronological order because there's a lot of overlap, but this list should keep you from getting spoiled by other books. Other than that, make sure to read all the prologues and epilogues! They're important! Feel free to skip the ones labeled as "optional" as well. I know there's a bunch of stuff, but that should be a complete list! Hope this helps.

    In my opinion there never should’ve been a practical reason for medicine cats not having kits. You can still have the Moth Flight plot line, but why not have the rule be religious rather than because it’s distracting? The reasoning for it has a ton of holes anyway, and many priest and healing positions in society and culture often call for celibacy or flat out not having a spouse at all because either God or the gods forbid it. Doctors being allowed to marry and reproduce is a very modern development, after all. This Hunter Gatherer cat society who worship stars would have some primitive viewpoints on that stuff, at least, they *should* have, and not the convoluted reason they made up.

    Yellowfang is forced to surrender Brokenkit. Her son grows up to become a mentally and physically scarred tyrant, who vents his anger and hatred towards his own family, onto others. Brokenstar sees kits as weak cat fodder, just as he felt he once was. Any kits who are fortunate enough to survive become like him.
    Had Yellowfang kept her mate and her kit, the pain and suffering caused by Brokenstar never would’ve happened. Another cat probably would’ve taken his place anyway. If breaking the code actually resulted in something bad happening, even if that something was caused by some mysterious evil/force. Whether it was from the dark forest or just cause.
    Like what if the role of medicine cat was cursed and the kits or descendants of medicine cats would guaranteed end up evil, like Brokenstar, or having a mate/kits would block the medicine cat's connection to starclan or potentially fatal bad luck falls on the mate, kin or clan. Something more consequential than one cat couldn't handle being a working parent so she decided no one else can either.

    Literally such a dumb rule it doesnt even make anymore 🤡🤡 lmao, there are COUNTLESS examples in the series and plus...? Why would kits and a mate be suddenly more important than other family? Leafpool had her sister, mother and father. Would they be more important than the others? 🤡
