You are right. They are the worst airline in America, and I mean the whole continent (not just the USA). The cops also knew this and that’s why they were nice to you.
If you live in the Tampa metro, check out Avelo Airlines. They now fly out of Lakeland (yes, Lakeland) to 7 US cities and Puerto Rico. It is a zero-stress way to go.
This is way over the top. I fly cross country a few times a month on AA. The only delays I experience are weather related. In fact, the one time this yer there was an equipment or crew problem they put me on a competing airline for no extra charge. For the most part the flight crews are great, planes are fairly new and the routes get me to where I need to go with one stop at Charlotte, Dallas or Miami.
Their on time performance and cancellation stats don't back up your contention. However, since you fly very frequently with them I'm open to the possibility that you are treated well as most airlines prioritize their most frequent fliers. I'm guessing they probably wouldn't have bumped you for standby passengers as they did to us.
On a recent vacation, I paid for direct flights from the west coast to Miami, and ended up getting a forced overnight stay in Dallas with no compensation or hotel. The airline also repeatedly changed my flights leading up to the trip, and then couldn't make up its mind on which terminal/gate my returning flight from Dallas back to the west coast was leaving from. (the gate was changed a dozen times the morning of the flight) I echo another comment: DFW and American Airlines are absolute garbage.
They had a website error when I was in Thailand that incorrectly selected a seat $1000 more than the economy class I clicked on, but the price after clicking through to the website was shown in Thai Baht (whereas the economy seat I clicked on was in USD) and so I had no idea until a week after I got home, I get a charge for $1500 on my credit card. They admitted it was a technical error on their part but refused to refund the difference in price. Never using American Airlines again.
You are going to see things like this with all of the big airlines. I've flown a lot with most of them. I used to travel 48 weeks a year for work, there are always going to be issues at times. I do fly American most of the time and they are OK, not better than some, but much better than others.
Over the last two years, I have had my flight delayed or cancelled EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. with American Airlines. I got into a fight with a customer service rep over the phone and I got stranded in Nashville overnight and missed work on Monday because of it. DFW and American Airlines are absolute garbage.
I hate the hub and spoke model. You have to take like 4 connections to go anywhere except hub to hub. Especially because the layovers are either 45mins of like 6 hours. It turns a trip that should be maybe 4-5 hours into a 16 hour ordeal.
Did you miss the part where they completely ignored him even though he had the boarding cards for a flight they said was already full? How the hell is that even possible?
I'm sure you'd be so ZEN if you were sitting there with your son with a boarding pass for a flight that was still boarding at 10:30 pm and they told you, sorry man we gave your seats away and no we aren't going to give you any $ for a hotel, this after they split our family apart on our original itinerary.

I've heard of them but haven't tried them yet. I will, thanks!
