The writing is so good. The first 3-5 seasons were brilliant television. And the few after it were pretty good. The show has a mix of clever/witty puns and analogies, wholesome storylines, raunchy jokes, lots of innuendo, and great acting.
The best part about modern family is that it’s complete. It doesn’t suffer like other series that fizzles out in the end. They ended on a very satisfying high note.
Student loans are far more common here than college/uni savings accounts started by parents. While college is the general term used for further education after regular schooling, the schools themselves are still called Universities (Stanford University, Harvard University, etc.)
In America we mostly do the loan thing too. There are scholarships you can win for certain things that are sort of like free money for college you get for excelling in sports or academics. Scholarships rarely cover the whole cost but it could. Also people can save for college for their kids but from my experience that’s richer people. I was poor and went to a community college I got a loan which I qualified for bc I didn’t make much money. It’s not a loan based off your credit and things like that.
My oldest child got amount of financial aid. That was a huge help. I would say that helped with between 40-50% of her degree and the rest in student loans. I don’t know many people that had any substantial college fund, but, I live in a rural area that isn’t particularly high average income.
College vs uni - actually, we have both. Technically, a college provides a 4-year degree only. A university also offers graduate degrees and doctorates. However, even universities are often referred to as college, even if the "university" is in the name. It's sort of like if a parking lot attendant says "you can park your car over there," but you're actually driving a van. Those are two different things and both of you know it, but they're closely related enough that in casual conversation, they both get thrown under the same umbrella.
11:04 Canadian here😁 and we have college and university same as American, and I would say at least in Canada there’s a good majority of us on student loans but it depends on your parents finances or if you live on your own yours, and there it really depends on your choice of study and it’s hire rate out of college, I am for example am going into trauma therapy for police and victims, a field that’s pretty new in my area still the first few therapy programs for people to take part in and work in were only opened in 2018
Way back when I was in high school (kinda crazy that 2002-2006 is way back, but it is), they'd play the song that they were singing at the end, "Total Eclipse of the Heart", at assemblies showing the dangers of alcohol.
A lot of people in the States have student loans for college/university. I had a student loan I finally paid off a few years ago. You can also get scholarships or grants.
Most people have student loans here. Your lucky if your parents can afford to pay for it. Most try to contribute to their kids college but prices are crazy. There’s financial aide and scholarships but that usually only pays for a portion of costs.
No one I know has ever had a college fund from their parents that they start from birth. Usually you get a federal student loan from the government which is JUST enough to pay for a degree. You can also get grants and scholarships that you do not need to pay back. Even my rich aunt never started a college fund for her daughter.
11:14 I’d say “college funds” (the parents saving money over a child’s lifetime) is mostly just a thing with more, uh… well let’s say “well-off families”. But your average college student probably just relies on student loans and/or scholarships.
I'm still waiting for one of you to recognize Ed O'Neill "Al Bundy" as Jay. Students in the US can attend a college or university for free if they qualify for the Pell Grant, and they don't have to pay it back. In some cases, the grant may pay part, not all. When I was unsure of what I wanted to study, I went to a small local college instead of a large university to get a general idea of the life and to add to my studies. I was awarded a Pell Grant to cover a year. As for my attending a university, I was thinking of the University of Alabama with a chance for a scholarship by way of the marching band because I played clarinet from sixth grade through twelfth grade and did well in school, but I ended up being really sick with a heart condition that took me out of local college for three months, and by the time I was ready for the university, I was told that I wouldn't be able to participate in the band because of my health. As time went on, I ended up owning my own little business as an event planner/decorator and photographer. 🙂 As for saying colleges or universities, many Americans say "college" even when they're going to a university, and yes, there's a difference in the two. It's easier to say "I'm in college, now" rather than "I'm attending the University of Alabama". Many will be name the college or university if asked, but including university as a "college" is pretty common.
A scholarship you don’t have to pay back but they are private so you have to apply for it and win it. Grants you don’t have to pay back but they are few and far between and issued by the government or the institution. The rest of it is up to you.
In the US the cost of a college education depends on the college you attend. For example, in my Great Plains state the cost of a state college is about $15,000 per year, compared to the ivy league schools $60,000 per year. Of course, if you have Harvard or Yale on your resume the chances of you getting a higher paying job are better. What we see, however, is an incredible amount of complaining from students who attend these pricey schools and don't get the high paying jobs. If they made the bigger mistake of attending an ivy league school with a major that isn't very marketable, for example, "theater studies", the reality is they have an enormous bill and are going to be hard pressed to repay it. All student loans have to be repaid, there isn't a threshold income that you have to hit before it's due.....however, if you don't make enough money you can apply for a deferment for a few months, but there is no total forgiveness.
Modern Family is my favorite sitcom of all-time. No show is funnier and even in episodes where someone is being a jerk, they are all still incredibly likable, even tho, over the years, there have been moments where I could have punched each and every one of them. LOL
The way i see it is a university is a collection of colleges. You usually attend a college of your choice like engineering, business, agriculture, arts, etc. The university has general basic classes that everyone has to take regardless of college for a more well rounded education. For example, i went to the college of engineering at Oregon State University.
Tbh I feel like the clips chosen for this compilation for pretty sub-par… Modern Family has some genuinely very funny moments, much funnier than these here in my opinion.
Only about 25% of households can afford to even think about a college fund. So, most students take out loans, which they start being billed as soon as they graduate...job or not, with extremely high interest. But the current generations won't have to worry about that, because nowadays most kids wouldn't even be accepted into community College, let alone a University. 😂
In America the only way to go to college for free is by serving in the military. The only other options are taking out high interest loans which you'll need to repay for the rest of your working life.
Sofe just so you know G is wrong about 75% of the stuff she thinks she knows or thinks she remembers. Modern Family was not on in the 90's. Try more like 2010 or later era. It is like hearing G trying to explain what tex mex is. I guess we have Illinois mex over by me.
I can't count how many times you have been wrong about things. Yes, Modern Family is in fact a wholesome show. No, most family's do not save money from birth for college. Most get a student loan. It's amazing how much of a "know it all" you come off as.

You can also get an ROTC scholarship and the military will pay for college. You do owe 6-8 years of service afterwards.

I wish I would have tried for scholarships in high school. However, I did the two years of community college before university, so that helped a lot.

We call college instead of university. And we have to save up all of our extra money to go there. Unfortunately, it’s not covered by the government.
"most people have a college fund for the children" they really Don't 😅. Thatw why many of us complain about student debt
