Oh thank goodness! It works! I couldn't freaking figure it out by reading the written instructions on Apple's site - this was so easy. I wasted 30 mins trying to understand the written directions when I could've watched this from the jump and be done in a few minutes. Thanks!
Thank you sooo much for this. The command+R worked. After I cleared, I tapped on the "reinstall macos" but after clicking on continue, I got an error message of "the recovery server could not be contacted", please what could be wrong?
I used this video to factory reset my MacBook Pro13" ~ purchase year 2018. It was very easy to reset thanks to the instructions MacRumors stated in the video. Would definitely reccomend for others looking to Factory reset/Wipe your laptop before recycling, giving as a gift, or trading in
This is the best and only video I could find that was quick easy and worked. Bought restored Mac’s not realizing they were older than was I was replacing 😩. Factory reset and was successful and I was able to return the Mac’s thank you so mych
Anyone else have to slow this man’s video down so you could follow along better. Thank you for the help man but I’d suggest slowing it down a little to make it easier for some to follow along.
I found that the only way to get [command]+R working, was with a wired keyboard. I used an old windows KB I had lying around. The "command" key is the one with the Windows logo on it.
After the erased process, I went to install macOS Monterey and it is telling me that it will take 2 hours and 19 minutes. Is it supposed to take that long?
Wooooooooow! Your video was a tremendous help! I'm so excited about having my iMac functioning to the level when I purchased it a few years ago. Cheers to you Dan!
Can you comment on the pros and cons of using erase assistant vs using another mac to DFU reset a modern mac? I recently used erase assistant and it could be me but I feel like the mac isn't as performant as it was when I had previously DFU reset it.
That first method for the apple silicon systems, does the erase all content and settings format the drive? Or just delete everything? Is it better, worse or the same as doing it the old fashioned way?
Great video -- For those who have a 2020 MacBook Pro with Big Sur installed, not sure if it applies to other models or OS's, the command + R on startup did not work for me. Instead, If you just shut down the computer when you turn it back on, just hold the power button until you see the "hold for startup options" screen you see here in the video. Hope that helps! Thanks for the video
But even after I do that, I only have two choices, option and Macintosh. When I click on Macintosh it’s restarts the computer. When I click on options it takes me to a recovery screen. Please help.
Thanks so much for this video. I was stuck for a while because I kept pressing (CMD) + (-) + R because that's how I read it in Apples instructions. Your explanation was clear and concise.
Bought a used 2017 iMac with all original users data still installed. OS has been upgraded. If I erase HD then reinstall OS will it be the upgraded or original OS? How will it verify MY Apple ID (whatever that is!)?
I was on a MacBook Pro 2012 and followed these steps, but for some reason it shows I'm reinstalling OS X Mavericks which looks like a super old version. Also it shows there is 23 hours remaining. Is this normal? Will I be able to update to my latest version after I'm done reinstalling?
First method work on my M1 pro. Bundle of thanks Man you really add many hours in my life which i was going to spend on resetting my mac an re installing the mac os. That was really pain in the ass
Hi, i bought a older Imac computer 2017 that doesn't allow to upgrade memory and stuck with 8GB , i thought i reset it and go back to an older OS system rather than use Ventura thinking later OS systems can slow down the computer. This video i watched and it worked except my only option was to reinstall Ventura , what is a way around this ?
Hi I did all the steps you mentioned in the video and it says after trying to install the X Lion OS that came with it. This popped up Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X. Please help.
I have 2 really really old Mac laptops…..do I use the 2nd method you suggested or should I take it to the Genius Bar…..I want to recycle them with Apple…thanks
Hello. I have an old iMac 27" 2010 and I'm trying to reset it before giving it. I'm on iCloud and at the sign out stage, but a window saying " iCloud needs to finish updating before continuing with sign out" but is taking for ever. Any suggestions? Thanks.
For Mac Studio: Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Transfer or Reset on the right, then click Erase All Contents and Settings. In Erase Assistant, enter your administrator information and click Unlock. Review items that will be removed in addition to your content and settings. If your Mac has multiple user accounts, click the arrow next to your account name to review the items. Click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions. Note: If your version of macOS has been modified, Erase Assistant can’t erase your Mac and displays an alert indicating you need to first reinstall macOS. Reinstall macOS, then use Erase Assistant.
Please Note: for those who are on Ventura go to system Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

Hello, do you know if when you erase, the data can still be available by signing into apple ID on another device
Thank you so much!! I used this to factory reset my MacBook Pro from 2017 which still uses Intel & it worked PERFECTLY. Straight & to the point.
Thank you sooo much for this. The command+R worked.
After I cleared, I tapped on the "reinstall macos" but after clicking on continue, I got an error message of "the recovery server could not be contacted", please what could be wrong?

No one asked :)
@@Anya_Scherbininadid you find an answer to your question?
Super helpful. Also, for the people using PC as their keyboard. You need to press the windows button, ALT & R. That’s what finally did it for me.
This is how you make a tutorial, easy & to the point. Thank you jiii thank youu😘
This is SO much easier than the gibberish written on Apple's help pages.
Thank you. 🥰
Thanks, Watching here from Manila, Philippines🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Thank you! I’d searched for 15 min trying to find written instructions with no luck. This short video helped immediately. 🎉

HI I HAVE WIPED MY 2010 MacBook Pro in brilliant condition but I can’t install any os system back on to it
Please help me out if you can
Look up how to install older os onto mac. So look up what operating systems are compatible with that mac and look up how to install
Done, thanks! Some slightly confusing steps that would have helped with better visuals but the instruction is solid.
This is the BEST tutorial... a clear explanation and is understandable. Highly recommended!
Thank you SO much! I've watched this video every time I've reset a Mac, and you get me through SO easily!!! Great job!!!
Can you reset a Mac with someone that already has an Apple ID on it?

2024, Macbook Pro A1502. Running Monterey. Everything worked 100% 👍🏾
Don’t you need to sign out your apple id before resetting? I mean even with the later apple silicon models?
I searched for so many videos and this was the ☝🏼 one

Will it erase my pictures and videos ? Or do i have to do that manually ?
Is it supposed to take 3 hours to reinstall
To attempt to clarify, the 'Sign Out' button for iCloud is under 'Overview' and not 'iCloud' as you imagine it might be.
Worked perfectly. Thanks a million ❤
Excellent, easy to follow instructions. Thank you!
So easy and simple. I got overwhelmed with the restart and this literally saved me!!! Thank you!

Soo if I have a m1 MacBook 2020, do I have to do the old method?
It’s rediculous that Apple do not have better instructions on how to do this but thank you to mac rumours for filling that gap 👏
