I didnt realise you can still buy these bikes, just found a place in the USA that sells them. I like that fuel tank you fitted. Used to own DR600's back in the late 80's...really liked them.
Nice one :) the old man used to ride the 600s also. The dr650 is surprisingly still going. Sad about the klr650 though Americans generally love them. Great bikes! The fuel tank is great imo. It almost modernizes the look of the bike just ever so slightly. Thanks for watching :)
I'd put the wide angle mirrors on the inside corners where you're only looking at your shoulders anyway. No point using the only part of your mirror that works. But that's just me. ☺ Nice set up. 👍
Mate awesome job on the mods, the DR community is fantastic all over the world, I'm currently setting up my own & alway's looking to see what other people have done and are doing. Great job!! will follow the build with Interest. R.S.M.
Really nice work Johny. Pretty much the complete package now (mainly the suspension to go as you mentioned) Good call on the bar risers. I tried them with the stock bars & ditched them after a couple of rides (I now have Renthals too). Happy ridin' mate!
Looks good, I have been watching all of the videos I can on the DR650. I just got a 2018 DR650 and I am making a list of the mods I need to do to mine.
I haven't ridden my DR650 fully loaded yet..But from riding my KTM690 long distance fully loaded. You may want to move your top bag closer to you on the rear seat. And reposition your straps. My frontend was real light and twitchy.. And moving the top bag solved it.. Your setup may be fine though... just something to keep in mind.
NzJohny ...yep, any weight at the back creates what they call a pendulum effect, like the pendulum on an old wall clock swinging with the weight at the bottom of the shaft. It’s always much better to move the weight forward, and of course to put your lightest things there like sleeping bags etc.
Haha all good man cheers. yeah gotta get another gopro my other ones done. its been a while between uploads for me but should be back in the game soon.have subbed mate great vids keep it up;)
I buy A DR650 today! Its probly the topping on the icing of the dumbest things I have ever done cake. I only have "rider permit" and need 2 ride with someone with a real M endorsement in Colorado. Looking 4 some help to get my bike 2 pass my drive test 4 the real M endorsement of my own. legal beagle. And promise to pass it on. We go to Breckenridge or Grand Junction. Leaving from the western state. Colorado.
My DR looks very much like yours, with exception of the Acerbis tank. My tank is stock. On the rear fender mod, how's that working out with you? I was thinking about doing that, but it seems like a lot of people who've done it are reversing it and putting the "dad fender" back on because of mud fly. The rest of my bike is nearly a duplicate of yours. I'd also like to know what brackets you used to mount your auxiliary lights. I have those same lights, but I have mine down on my forks. I upgraded my headlight and they seem to give it additional width where they are. I'd like to add more on my Bark Busters for distance. Thanks.
Hey mate. No problem with the fender mod at all for me. The led brackets are just 2 diy alloy bent to 90 degrees and bolted to the hand gaurds. About 4mm thick alloy
@@NzJohny If you get tired of looking at your shoulders in your mirrors, I picked up some mirror extensions off of eBay for $27 (American). I thought they were a little over priced for what they were, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd do it right now without a flinch. Best thing I've done in a while. I did break down and order an Acerbis tank (5.3gallon) this week. I'll probably order 2 petcocks (right and left) and "T" the fuel line. I don't like the plastic petcock that comes with the tank, and I've seen folks get real low on fuel and not be able to access the fuel on the right side. Had to watch your video again.👍
Great video, thanks for making it! You said that you've heard that there isn't enough grease in the steering and rear linkage, so you added more. I have to ask...when you took it apart, what was YOUR opinion? Did you think there was a real lack of grease, or did you just decide that as long as you already took it apart, you might as well add more grease? I'm a brand new DR owner, and I don't feel very confident on my mechanical abilities. So I'm really wondering if this is something I really need to try to tackle.
Honestly it wasnt that bad! My personal preference I would like to have more so I did as I cross alot of rivers etc. They will be fine how they are for some time from new. Thanks for watching:)
@@NzJohny Thank you for the reply! That helps me alot. I'm a new subscriber to your channel and looking forward to checking out both your new and old videos!
Great video of your mods! I just got the Acerbis tank last week and I agree I totally love it on there. Did you ever make a video about the LEDs? I'm curious how you wired them up and stuff.
Thanks mate :) actually I am in the process of getting another dr650 and the led is one of the things I'm not going to put back on. Didnt seem to give me all that much light. I just went straight to the battery with a switch. Better planning next time I think.
NzJohny ...I can recommend the Cyclops LED bulb. It’s $75 or so, but it pumps out heaps more light, nice white light, and only draws 38w on high beam. Those 38w throw more light than an upgraded 90w bulb
What did you end up doing for the suspension, and who did you use for the revalve in Christchurch? I'm also in Christchurch and just ordered a new DR650. I'm thinking of going with Plex valve for the fork and the FFRC piston and shim stack for the rear. As a dirt rider and DH mountain biker I just know the stock suspension won't be good enough for me.
Sounds like the way to go mate. I actually didn't end up doing anything and since sold the bike. Long story short I have another dr650 now. So if u r happy with your suspension setup when u do it then I'd love to hear how it is.
Hey mate :) they fit perfectly. At first I thought the bars were going to pull the cables but the end result is slightly more tension on the cables but still all slack and no rubbing on anything etc. Thanks for watching :)
Hey mate. Yes absolutely. I actually had to make spacers to accommodate the lack of side pegs. Most side racks take this in mind. Correction. Yep u are fine keeping the pegs for bags
Your DR looks great! I'm looking for a windscreen for my DR, where did you get yours? I'm 5'10" so it might be right for me. Thanks for the good information
RagedKLX i was actually going to buy a drz400 before this bike. But i didnt because of that reason. I wanted something that would do long distance road riding. I am often going 80mph and the bike is perfectly fine. I love the drz400 though
oh man i appreciate the reply! going to show this to my buddy. I think I am going to sell the 400 and get the dr650. I mean i love in Colorado so there is not many single tracks. they are all very wide trails so I think it will be perfect for a dr650.

I have a prop stand in the bag. Now after watching your cool video. Am going to move it outside the bag. Nice bike you have and color scheme
Douglas Rhine thanks man! Appreciate it :)

You can raise THAT wind screen higher. Just position it higher up the head light cover
Yip :) might give that a shot at some point
Now you just made me have to add a bunch of new things to my list of mods . Very nice DR650 !
