My dad used to work in boat construction and a few times he was able to bring one of those liferafts home (12:55). We would put it in the garden in summer and fill it up with water. So we had our private pool with a 'roof' over it. After a while the roof would rip, so we took it off and treat the sides as trampolines and jump against the pole in the middle. It's an amazing memory I have from my youth. My dad passed away a few years ago and I still miss him very much. Thank you for bringing up this amazing memory of him.
Just a clarification for those that might be unaware: When he said "It does not get dark up here, ever...". Within the Arctic circle, and the Antarctic circle, the phenomenon of Midnight sun occurs. This means that the sun does not set below the horizon for at least once every year, per the definition of midnight sun. Directly on the poles, the duration of the midnight sun lasts for pretty much half a year. The downside of the seemingly ever lasting sun in the Polar circles, is that when half a year goes by, the opposite Pole circle wants its share of the sun. After 6 months of everlasting sun, the phenomenon of "Polar night" occurs. This is the complete opposite, and means that the sun never rises above the horizon. No real daylight, for 6 months straight.
This is so exciting. I look forward to seeing the whole series and hearing more about your trip to see Eamon and Bec! Love traveling vicariously with you guys. Thanks for sharing your adventures!

I did a cruise with my mother to Alaska back in 2007 and fell in love with the beauty of the landscape. I personally enjoyed going through the ice that we had to traverse and the glaciers we saw. BUT...... I am extremely jealous of your trip. I didn’t know there was a cruise that one could take to the North Pole. I guess I will live vicariously through y’all.

Oh, yay!! A North Pole series! I'm SO EXCITED!!! I loved your Antarctica trip so I'm just as excited to see this one! And how great is it that you were in Svarlbard. Do you know there's a pretty popular RUclipsr that lives there full time? Her name is Cecilia Blomdahl. I've learned so much about that island from watching her videos. It's a very beautiful, weird & fascinating place to be.
My dad is aboard the Commandant Charcot for the 4th time as I write this comment. And always travelled aboard ships with the Ponant company. The chief medical officer on the ship, Anne-Marie, is a close friend of mine. Glad you enjoyed the only luxury icebreaker arctic cruise there is in the world. Oh and of course, c'est français ;) (It's french)
I couldn’t even hold in my excitement as I watched this! Such a dream to go to the North Pole plus 2 weeks on that amazing ship! Happy we get to ride along with you 🤗
I’m soooo excited for this series. Makes me wanna play the lottery to see if I could ever go. Love you guys and thank you for bringing us along on your adventure.
What an incredible experience! I’m looking forward to the entire series. I watch travel RUclips videos to get inspired for the three months my partner and I travel each year. Spending 50000 on a two week trip is far beyond aspirational for us…but it’s wonderful to experience it through your eyes! I like the balance of budget friendly and the occasional luxury experience on your channel. Thanks for the inspiration! ❄️
Holy Smokes! I just checked the price of a 13-14 day cruise to the North Pole--yikes $32,000 smackers. The video is great because it's something I'll not be doing...not that I don't want to, but that I'll be spending my dough on a few other home building projects. :) Thanks for the amazing vid.
In a future video can you guys touch on the environmental impact of the ship? Is there any concern around breaking through ice where there may be seal pups or polar bears? Do they cruise at a certain time of year to avoid harming wildlife? Does the ship run on sustainable fuel? What are the giant batteries for? Haha sincerely NO SHADE at all. I love you guys and watch every video but have so many questions about the fragile environment at the ice caps 😊
@@MusiQinMySoul319 I feel like such a negative Nancy for even mentioning it, but I’m so concerned about the environment these days I couldn’t help but ask. And the ship is so state of the art I was thinking maybe it does function sustainably.
@@alysekitchen4199 naw you aren't at all and if you are lol SO AM I lol ! I know they are trying to take the routes with the least amount on ice but i still wonder. plus how much waste for food and what do they do with it? but I see from other episodes they are respectful to wildlife. but I still wonder the foot print it will have. especially with wildlife and I migration routes.
It’s too bad you didn’t do a collab with Svalbard’s own Cecilia Blomdahl! She vlogs about life in that northern-most town and is one of my faves. You could check out her remote cabin and life. Maybe on the way home?
I am super excited. I viewed your Antarctica trip and now the North Pole. That ship is so excitingly stocked with things to do, enjoy and eat. I want to be there as well. It appears safe and luxurious. It is a must do trip.
@@ankurgiri7589 Thats per person for the cheapest cabin and you have to pay for at least a 2-person cabin. They are in a delux suite which is 37k per person so 74k in total...
Kara I loved your faux Scandinavian accent! And…this is a bucket list trip! But wow. Just looked at the price. Thank you to Swoop & Ponant for hosting you, and you two for having a channel that enables us vicariously travel to the North Pole.
Such a delicate ecosystem. All we need is a cruise boat ripping the polar ice cap for pure enjoyment of some. I hope you guys have a notion of the responsibility of what you are advertising and the toll this is taking to the arctic.
I think they haven’t. Those “wow” and that joy every time they hear the ice breaking make me think that they have absolutely no idea of the damage that this kind of ships do to the frail arctic ecosystem. Unfortunately nowadays ignorance is everywhere and these two guys are the living proof.
Wowww, this is literally a dream! Visiting the Arctic & Antarctica are some of my top top bucket list trips, so I would absolutely love to do this... Although in a melting world, I do wonder what the implications are of breaking all that ice just for tourists to visit.. I'd be interested to find out what if any offsetting the company does, and if there are any downsides of this type of travel.
The ice breaking had me on the same train of thought. I did appreciate that they are bringing scientists in addition to tourists, and was curious if the scientists would have had the funding to make the trip without the tourist effort. However ever since the arctic trip i have wondered how much tourism affects polar ice melt, as i did not realize it was such a big industry before. This is not me saying that K&N are doing anything explicitly wrong by participating, more so that they have made me aware of the industry and that it is bigger than i had any previous conceptions of, and that has made me curious about the environmental ramifications of such trips.
The breaking of the ice has no real impact as it reforms alpost directly behind the ship. As for what the company does is respect very strict rules for the safeguarging (look up iatto) and create the most efficient ships they can. source I worked on the Charcot (this ship)
@@mckay24ful What bothers me is this exuberant extremely "excited" way to experience the luxury of such a cruise in an extremely sensitive ecosystem. I think it's totally ok that they do this and share the impressions. However, it would be more than desirable if they address geographic factors, environmental vulnerability and changes due to climate change. I know their mission is not to explain the environment there - but that is part of a trip to the Arctic. Especially when so many people are watching these videos, they have a lot of potential to create awareness of the issues that affect the region and ultimately the world. That's what I would like to see.
Same here, I’m more interested in traveling to Antarctica. Because It’s so isolated from humans, as well as the wildlife. I love penguins, which also kinda inspired my username. As well as whales, seals, orcas, Aurora Australis (not wildlife but cool thing to mention). This comment got way to long for me but just know that Antarctica is on my top travel lists.
Amazing that we have the opportunity to travel to all four corners of the world. I don’t want to see all countries in the world but all those on my bucket list.
I work for Silversea and we just sailed here with the Silver Cloud. We have four ultra luxury expedition ships in our fleet of twelve at the moment which all sail These routes and others being ice breakers themselves.
The ship looks stunning, I felt guilty watching all the ice break apart though, I hope it's not causing much environmental damage. Good that the heat is recycled throughout the ship though. Also, Nate it does get dark up there... in the winter the sun won't come up at all. :P I'm sure you knew that though.
@@RowdyBrian17 Crushed ice melts faster than block ice. The bears hunt on the ice floes. I'm not saying it makes that big of a difference but it's good to question it.
@UCDw-7X5xZ9Khz2jp5gy9_hQ Thanks for clearing that up. I was a little concerned when they were looking for bears from the ship as they are breaking through the ice.
I personally did some work with the NOAA over an icecap and just so you guys know: Ice sheets like these come seasonally and get replenished very often. The issue is not these sheets of ice but the actual thousands of year old of ice in Both Ice Bergs, Glaciers, and Ice Caps. Those would be extremely dangerous if they keep melting. Ships like these barely make a dent on environmental damage apart from the CO2 emissions. If anything we should definitely be the change by every individual being more conscious and by actually supporting non profits that help keep the environment preserved!
This looks amazing! I hope the ship is more eco friendly than it looks, considering how quickly the polar ice is melting. Also, they’d better have arranged for you to meet with Santa while you’re up there! It’d be so disappointing to go to the North Pole and NOT meet Santa
I'd assume seeing that the water bottles were reusable and they didn't want anything plastic on the ship, all of the heat is recycled, and they have scientists aboard to get two places the otherwise wouldn't be able to get to, that the ship works hard to try to be eco neutral, even though with ships tech and how business works it's probably not 100%
Apparently from their website, the ship has the latest designs to eliminate pollution and equally importantly doesn’t dump any waste into the sea while traveling, with most of it being recovered.
It can run on MGO or LNG GAS, and also has battery packs installed. So in calm seas it can run fairly economical, but it has 35 megawatts of propulsion, so it will of course burn some fuel during ice breaking maneuvering. The company I work for designed and built this ship, I've spent somewhat around 1000 hrs on board during commissioning and Sea Trials, its a beautiful vessel😊👍
You said the hull of the ship that breaks the ice is only 5 cm thick. I immediately thought about the various types of steels that have been developed in just the past 10 years. Such as Maximent, K390, CPM Cruwear, and S90V. And thats only naming a few. But the difference in hardness, toughness, ability to hold an edge for much longer, so on and so forth, is astounding. Alot of these steels can be found in the knife industry. But plenty of these steels are being utilized in ship building and manufacturing of all sorts Im sure. Very unique ship and tour that's for sure.
Sooo excited to see what comes next over the next 2 weeks on this amazing and EPIC adventure! Following Kara all over the ship got me totally and completely lost! That was fun! Can’t believe it’s so huge and so luxurious! What an incredibly built ship! As everyone has mentioned already, the joy you bring to all of us is next level and so appreciated! Thank you!
What an unreal experience! While part of me thinks I'd love to do it, I then remember just where it is. How far out in the middle of nowhere and the ocean it is, and I shudder.
As much as I HATE the winter/cold and would NEVER even think of taking a cruise - - watching this makes me want to drop everything and spend all of my money to do this!! Cannot wait to see the rest of the series!!!!!
Although this trip looks incredible, I can’t help but wonder if cruises like this are only going to speed up the ever growing environmental issues. Will the ice breakers cut the already shrinking ice into smaller pieces, making it them melt quicker? The fuel emissions effect the environment from the cruise ships? Will the traffic impact the Arctic wildlife? I’ve read an article on how impactful the Antarctica cruises have been. Having wanted to go on one of those cruises myself. It just concerns me when traffic begins to flow through delicate environments.
Was looking for a comment like this! Traveling by cruise ships is by far the least environmental friendly way to travel. And when doing it in such fragile environments, it just gets worse. To Kara and Nate: I really hope you can consider your own impact on such beautiful environments. You seem like really amazing people, and I really hope you take measures to offset your own environmental footprints. You live off travelling the world - and I know it's an amazing opportunity. But what if everyone did what you're doing - how much would be left for anyone to enjoy at all? No plastic on the ship? Great. But it's just a whole lot of green washing and doesn't really change the impact of such a trip.
Ahhh wow, that ship is absolutely STUNNING!!!! This is for sure our list now!!! I love all of the lighting and how glamorous the cabins are - and probably the best gym view, EVER!

That is an incredible ship. Wow I’m so looking forward to this series! Thanks for bringing us along.
I live for Kara's tours, always brighten my day !
Glad we've cleared that one up.
This is so exciting. I look forward to seeing the whole series and hearing more about your trip to see Eamon and Bec! Love traveling vicariously with you guys. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
I’m so glad you guys uploaded. I can’t travel and you guys make me feel like I’m there with y’all. Thank you for sharing your life with us. 🥰
I cannot wait for your other videos!! This looks like it was one amazing trip and it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Sorry couldn’t help myself. Looking forward to seeing a new episode before next Saturday!!! Currently a little over half way the watch from the beginning playlist and to see your guys growth is so amazing!!! And to add to it my husband has finally joined in watching with me. It’s sparked his interest in traveling which I have ALWAYS wanted to do and now we’re making our own bucket list!!!
You two are so cute together! Love the playfulness and energy between you two especially after being together 15 years. One can only hope to be as lucky!

Smiling so much after watching this, and after reading the comments, it’s amazing how big an impact y’all are able to have! Look at all these people whose days you’ve just brightened through your adventures and storytelling! 💛
The intro leads me to believe it's gonna be a great video! Whenever Kara gives a tour, it reminds me of that old MTV Cribs show. 😀
The excitement when breaking the ice is contagious, especially when Kara hears it in the restaurant 😊🥶
You guys inspire me so much! I’ve just got back from an incredible 2 week trip around Poland on trains and made videos everyday! You are the ultimate goal! I love how you guys make videos! Thank you for the inspiration
Super excited for this series. Something I can’t imagine being able to do myself but seeing it through your eyes / cameras is awesome. Thank you.
I’m dealing with a nasty divorce and moving in to my very first apartment as a single girl. It’s exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Your videos and lots of prayers are what’s getting me through this major adjustment in my life. I can’t tell you how much I need your videos to help me escape a little and get a sense of a level head and peace. You two are almost literally saving my sanity! God Bless You!
Been where you are and and now I wonder why it took me so long…..I LOVE IT!….and I hope you will too, eventually.
I only recently discovered you two on RUclips...and I'm glad I did. I have so much respect for the two of you having unlocked the secret to actually living life at its fullest. I watch each episode you release with a big smile on my face, because, how can I not? Your positive nature and all around happiness is contagious as well as inspiring. I so badly want to go on this trip to the North Pole and see it with my own eyes now. Oh, just a small observation on my part. You guys clean up pretty good in your fancy attire. (Insert showering joke now) Thanks for the adventures. 🙂
Kara drinking her Champaign, on the balcony of the boat is something that I never knew I needed to see until I saw it. Amazing 😂😂😂😂
Kara's unabashed joy is infectious
I was going to say, they went to Svalbard and didn't meet Cecelia??
Amazing - can't wait to see the rest!! It's so nice to watch how you both really appreciate these experiences!!
At 74, I'm living vicariously through you guys! Thanks...
I felt like Kara, skipping along all the decks and rooms and outdoor areas, grinning ear to ear and happy as anything! Great vlog!
Kara is perfect for showing the ship because she is animated over the little things.
This is my favorite series ever I keep thinking of it, something about the beautiful ship and the calm seascape around it.
I love your videos. I love Kara's positive energy and Nate always makes me laugh.😊
Thanks SO much for sharing this with us!! A Kara and Nate video always instnantly turns a gloomy day around 🙂

Nobody, nooobody, makes travel videos as well as Kara & Nate. Thank-you so very much. Lotsa love from Doug in Toronto.
I love you guys and watch every video but have so many questions about the fragile environment at the ice caps 😊
this is exactly what I was wondering! like how much damage is it doing or will do?

Midnight sun must be the beautiful thing on the planet, I swear, the look of the sun hitting the ice perfectly and the bluest skies

YOU GUYS! What an amazing trip! This channel just keeps getting better and better!
Absolutely love Nate and him explaining things ❤
Kara I loved your faux Scandinavian accent! And…this is a bucket list trip! But wow. Just looked at the price. Thank you to Swoop & Ponant for hosting you, and you two for having a channel that enables us vicariously travel to the North Pole.
Great! Support more Ice breakers in North pole. It's great for the Earth.
Oh please. Give me a break. Just enjoy the damn video and keep your opinions to yourself.
Your Antarctica series was fantastic, I’m already sure this will equally blow my mind 🤩
Cool 👍
The ship looks stunning, I felt guilty watching all the ice break apart though, I hope it's not causing much environmental damage. Good that the heat is recycled throughout the ship though. Also, Nate it does get dark up there... in the winter the sun won't come up at all. :P I'm sure you knew that though.
How the hell does breaking ice cause environmental damage?
@@RowdyBrian17 it doesnt!😊
This looks amazing! I hope the ship is more eco friendly than it looks, considering how quickly the polar ice is melting. Also, they’d better have arranged for you to meet with Santa while you’re up there! It’d be so disappointing to go to the North Pole and NOT meet Santa
Eco friendly, north pole and cruise are words that does not work togheter. Cruises are not anywhere near eco friendly
Santa resides in North Pole, Alaska!! I’ve seen him there!!!
The company I work for designed and built this ship, I've spent somewhat around 1000 hrs on board during commissioning and Sea Trials, its a beautiful vessel😊👍
ахахах, ты тоже тут после Топлеса?)
"Role reversal", as Kara hands Nate the coffee cup. How cute. Also, loved the little butt slap at dinner, LOL.
For anyone wondering, prices at this ship for this trip start at 42 000 dollars! Have fun.
three thousounds of comments and no one else talk about the actual price, it's out of reach for 99% of people on planet, how naive are youtube viewers

Did u MEET SANTA???!!!
