  • Testing Read, Write, and video rendering speeds on the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (version 2, 1050 MB/s) and the Samsung T7 Shield SSD (also rated at 1050 MB/s)
    Copying a 50GB folder to each drive, and also rendering a 7 minute 4K video from Final Cut Pro, using H.264 code.
    I'll also unbox the drives to showcase the accessories that are included with each drive as of 2022 and 2023.
    Thanks for watching!

    3:36 - don't transfer files simultaneously to both devices for measurement. There is a lot of factors that can affect the results.

    Finally a test for these drives with a real world test like rendering videos and not only that black magic crappy benchmark. Thanks.

    Well done comp.I went with the San disk.because it seemed lighter.and a smaller form . This was important to me for work as portability is huge for me. Best Buy had the Sam surrounded by a security device that would not let me feel the Sam’s true weight.

      So has it failed on you yet?

  • @danjo8673
    @danjo8673 2 года назад +12

    No, you should copy them one at a time, not both at once for a real world test.

      This is a good point that I was considering as well! I’ll do the individual tests on my next review video

      Correct. Running both at same test makes it pretty much invalid

    hope you doing great!!! while editing 4K 10Bit files how the SSD handling the video files need to proxy or it run like as smooth as butter in timeline.

      Thanks! I do believe Final Cut Pro creates proxy files in the background using different qualities of ProRes 4444 and 422 (there is a drop-down when creating a new project)

    The difference between the 2 is the Samsung works and the 3 SanDisk Extreme's I've purchased all had issues. Not typical for most of the SanDisk products I've used over the years, but I wont buy any of that series ever again.

    Echoing comments on testing one disk at a time. Also, should the MacBook be plugged in? Machine could be working at lower performance on battery power.

    • @Filmlove
      @Filmlove  Год назад +2

      My thoughts are the same around this topic. But I intentionally wanted to give more of a real world test than an optimal speed test, since I reckon that many laptop users will be on the go, and use their ports for other peripherals. It’s optimistic to see that even in less than ideal conditions these drives still exceeded my initial expectations

  • @pubfixture

    I'll tell you the difference. I just had 2 SanDisk Extreme 4TBs fail on me...

    • @Filmlove
      @Filmlove  Год назад +1

      I can imagine that pain. Curious why on the 4TB, I haven’t owned one of those drives yet, just the 1TB and 2TB. I wonder if 4TB is too much storage density without sufficient thermal management that’s causing premature failure? In any case, sorry to hear

    Are the speeds improved with a thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable?

    • @Filmlove
      @Filmlove  Год назад

      It may be worth a try since I’m not sure the cable rating of the included cable from Sandisk. Though I’d recommend using at least a TB3 cable if you needed a longer cable, (TB3 should have the same maximum speed as a TB4 cable in theory)

    • @Filmlove
      @Filmlove  Год назад

      I actually do have a grey and a blue SSD from Sandisk. The grey 1TB drive was from Costco, and the blue 1TB drive was from Amazon. So far both seem to be holding up

    Hi there. I have the Sandisk extreme V2 (newer and faster) and I use it to edit 4k videos with my m1 mbp and I find that it gets WAY TOO HOT! wow...I guess all SSDs get hot while editing 4k videos? This cannot be normal. The Samsung T7 too? Is the Samsung just as good for video editing.I need a second drive but I'm reluctant about the Sandisk v2. Thanks

    • @Filmlove
      @Filmlove  2 года назад

      Hey, yes I did find that the Samsung T7 speeds for video editing were impressive also, so definitely give it a try. The drive gets warm, but not hot, I reckon the thick layer of silicone covering the drive keeps the surface temperature in check

    My brand new Sandisk Extreme Pro ssd 4tb was getting corrupted and losing data on Mac Pro M1. Just returned the ssd. Now I’m looking at buying a reliable ssd.

    • @Filmlove
      @Filmlove  2 года назад +1

      Ah sorry to hear. I wonder if that’s just a bad batch. In any case perhaps try the standard Sandisk Extreme (not the Pro). It has lower peak speed, yes, but I haven’t experienced any problem yet with the two drives that I own after fairly heavy video editing several times a week

  • @upsidedownjim

    Thanks! This helped quite a bit. Is there any difference if you transfer one drive at a time using the same port?

    • @Filmlove
      @Filmlove  2 года назад +2

      I haven’t tested that scenario yet, but that’s a good question especially if multitasking affects the transfer rate on the computer
