@@eerievibes6854 I have to agree. I want a new direction from them, not 2000 era lips rehashed. Besides, Wayne's voice is so faulty at this point, that's the main thing detracting from all these tracks. Great instrumental! They ought to lower his vocal mix a bit
@@eerievibes6854 couldn't disagree more - it is a nice reset for the new decade. Nothing wrong with shades of Bulletin / Yoshimi / Terror. They'll confound again with the follow up.
From a new Rolling Stone article about this song: "In the Flaming Lips’ newest song and video, “Mother Don’t Be Sad,” frontman Wayne Coyne tells the tale of being held at gunpoint as a young man when he worked at Long John Silver’s... Coyne obviously didn’t die all those years ago at the fast-food restaurant - he wasn’t even injured - but the experience did alter the course of his life. “Well, until then, I could probably say I didn’t realize I was really alive... I never really thought about it. We were living such an insane, healthy, wonderful, happy life - my brothers and all of our friends just running around doing the craziest shit ever. But then I’m laying on the floor thinking: ‘This is how I’m going to die.'” Coyne said he had a lot of anxiety as a younger man that he didn’t want to follow in his family’s working-class footsteps - that he wanted to go into music. This experience, he says, cleared all that up for him. “After this robbery, for a little while, I just thought, ‘It doesn’t matter. They don’t care. They want me to do music,'” he recalled. “So, I think it helped me in that way - to not feel like I had abandoned these things that my father had worked for. So, I have to say, I think it was probably the greatest gift a young person could have - to suddenly get a new perspective on what’s important in your life.”"
This story reminds me of the part in Fight Club where Tyler forces a guy at gunpoint to promise to go to college and follow his dream of being a vet. ruclips.net/video/HINIK3pIOp4/видео.html
How does he put so much sadness, beauty and hope into those intentionally simple but poetic lyrics? I asked myself the same question while listening to "do you realize?".
Growing up in OKC near where Wayne grew up and knowing some of his story, the heartfelt approach and personal themes he tackles on American Head are staggering yet beautifully rendered as only Wayne, Steve and company can do. I’ve loved the Lips since Oh My Gawd and that will never change. Okies forever.
The way this absolutely incredible song ends abruptly … analogous to a kind of death.... it disturbs me not necessarily bad.. just...emotionally. Deeply. The summer this song was released, a month before it was released, my dear friend Tim unexpectedly died in a motorcycle accident. When I heard this song - that came through and I felt it. Especially times I was driving on the stretch of road it happened. Just profound.
I'm incredibly THANKFUL Wayne didn't die that night! This world would truly suck without the Flaming Lips catalog of incredible sounds, energy and love!
Every new song is an absolute gift to my tired quarantined ears. Thank you Flaming Lips! Wayne, I adore you. Things are gonna get crazy good when we all dance and sing at your show together. ♥️🎶 🔥 👄
He sings sooo much from the front of his vocal mask that it's strange to see interviews with him speaking in his normal low vocal range. 'Such an amazing performer.
The energy of this makes me think of The Wall by Pink Floyd a bit... still, this is beautiful and The Flaming Lips is one of the best bands that I have seen live... It was an amazing show!
Shades of the soft bulletin… The album that made me a hard-core Lips fan. Saw them on that tour at the Ogden theater in Denver… I rarely do it, but I spent the concert up near the stage that night. Got covered in confetti. I was vacuuming that stuff off my rug for the next couple of weeks
There'll be at least 1 positive thing in 2020 : AMERICAN HEAD. Their best in a long time, prolly since the great EMBRYONIC. Very deep, moving, touching songs on this one. The Lips's maturity is admirable. Hats off, guys !
This may sound like a crazy story, or maybe I'm overlooking and overanalyzing. But on Aug 23 this year, I was on a Flaming Lips mood/kick, and I played Yoshimi Battles and At War With the Mystics in 5.1. Later that day, my brother had seizures that developed into something worst. That day my bro passed away. It's been a crazy 3 weeks. So today I decided to check out the new Flaming Lips and I encounter with Brother Eye and Mother please don't be sad...The Universe or whatver God you believe in is sending me all these messages. I love and miss you bro!

@@brandonshaw7619 I agree 100%. I got my gf hooked on FL with that song. We asked a local cover band to play it once and after that everytime would see us, they would play it. So it has a special place in our relationship. I tried to introduce her to other songs but she is luke warm to most of them. (I just wish she was as big as a fan as I am) well fan to fan I am glad we connected. Stay safe and well.
Hello from Heidelberg Pennsylvania! Wayne, your ingenuity is insightful, you have replaced the bubble machine with plastic sheeting...going with the times in a positive manner! that makes sense, it fits with how they ended the song just like how life could end abruptly
or maybe I'm just reaching
He also shared this story in the documentary Fearless Freaks. Pretty sure he walked around the restaurant that was the LJS if I remember correctly.
This song feels like a companion to "Do You Realize?". Such a great band.
And a soul sussesor to mr ambulance driver
