I think one of the things I like the best about your videos is your "on the basic simple side" kayak. No motor, not a ton of electronics. In my opinion too many kaya fishing channels aren't fishing out of kayaks that are assessible to the average angler. Thank you for sticking to the basics and slaying the fish.

If it's a natural creek, on a natural lake, you're right.

In Bulgaria the main game fish is perch. I have noticed that perch and crappies act alike - they stack together and move in schools. Back here we have noticed that when you find the perch and you catch one of them an you release it the rest of the school goes after the one that darted away after bein released. That's why we put the perch we catch in a floating net until we catch the whole school. We release all of them afterwards. Hope this makes sense and applies to your scenario, although crappies are a lot bigger than perch.

I still have the Hobie, it’s just a lot of extra gear I have to lug around and a kayak I have to handle a lot more delicately. If I’m fishing a lake less than a mile across I spend more extra time at the launch getting the Hobie rigged up vs the Tarpon than I’d save by pedaling vs paddling. I planned on stopping at a lake I had to cart in but there were a few people there already. If I have to bring the cart I don’t have room for the pedal drive. Most of the time keeping it simple is my best route.

    • @ndyakangler

This time of year they should be up shallow along pencil reeds. Later in the year if the water is clear enough you can visually find a deep weed edge I've caught many crappie there while bass fishing. The cabbage weeds that come out to about 12ft on a lot of lakes here is where I'd find them.

I'm glad you posted the date, May 2013. At your title, I was thinking, how are you catching crappies near shore up north when they just started hitting the shores in shallow ponds/lakes in north Texas, mid March. Great video as always.

I am thinking he meant May 2023, but I could be wrong.

Once the ice comes off the lakes the crappie will start moving up shallow within a day or two. If the sun is shining the shallows around dead vegetation warm up quick.

@@ndyakangler Thanks for the info. I only ice fished for them when I lived in NH. When I was a kid in NY, my dad took me to a cove where we could get a bucket of them. I had to guess that it was pre-spawn because they weren't on beds. I remember it was after catching walleyes off the bridges, cause that was always freezing.

I checked one of my early ice out spots on Monday but it was still covered. It shouldn’t be long though it might be open by now!

Slip bobber fishing is not a method we use here in the UK but i guess it would work for our perch. I guess just a slow retrieve with a few lifts in? Tight lines.

Is there any eel fishing in your area? It's a pretty common fish in Holland.

Not around here, at least that I know of. I’m about as far from the ocean as you can get though and I think eels are more of a saltwater creature.
