Really enjoyed and loved your review sir! Information is short but its all in there. Loved your videos. Looking to get this drone for my cycling adventures here in Wales 🏴.
I'm a graphic designer who shoots a lot of social media content. I did own a early Mavic but sold it because I never seemed to have the time to set it up. This looks fairly convenient to use with a phone in manual mode. All I need is very basic reveal clips of buildings. So just a simple push in, hopefully I'll be able to do this with the Neo.
I think you're underestimating it. Very good flight with controller, coming will be acrobatics and first person view capability. That's more than a selfie drone.
@@alwaysanotheradventure Fpv capability is good way to put it, don't know anyone in Fpv community who would trust DJI RC link, but it might be good starter drone for someone who wants to learn to fly ( but again it would be cheaper to buy real RC radio and learn in simulator, just my opinion 😉) keep up good work 👍
@@alwaysanotheradventure I had a look at manual, DJI claim neo won't do full acro. Only dij drone that had "full" acro was avata on first firmware and DJI had to change it after drone was falling out of sky and keep spinning propellers full throttle on ground.
A fantastic review, as normal. And such professional cinematography and editing - with or without the neo. I considered buying these when I heard about them although I also want to see the X1 comparison first. One thing I didn't hear you mention was the price, which is lower than I thought. They seem to be retailing at launch for a very reasonable £169 for the basic drone and £299 for the one I think they sent you. The £169, if you can then buy the rest as you want/need, seems like a no-brainer. I would love, and I think I wouldn't be the only one, that would like to see a comparison video, in the field. The only thing that might put me off using it for cycling is that according to DCRainmaker's review, it will lose you at anything over 13 miles an hour. So fast cycling is not an option. But not overly bothered about this - I think. The lack of obstacle avoidance is a pain too, but the price and ease of use - plus the image quality and good tracking - counters this.
Hi Slaine - I didn’t mention the price because they didn’t tell me! I’m working on a comparison with the X1 now. I’ll get the relative prices in there - good idea.
Simon? Is there an update on the new features and tracking speed improvements? Mine arrives later today - I bought myself an extra Christmas present,- and I am curious to hear your views.
Wow mate, you are effing fit . I bought the Neo last week but i had to also buy a second hand 64bit OS phone,as the app will NOT work on a 32 bit phone system. BEWARE ANDROID USER'S !
GREAT DRONE FEATURES ONLY BAD THING IS THE CAMERA QUALITY AND DONT HAVE OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE...IM THINKING TO WATE THE NEXT VERSION OF NEO THANKS FOR THE REVIEW HAPPY FLYING❤
That's probably a question for DJI but it's easy to make vertical videos like this cut-down from mine ruclips.net/user/shortsDfBcuHGq1_I The 4k file is easy to crop into the 720p most vertical formats like using something like CapCut
Great review and I did enjoy the West Coast Reece video. It was worth waiting for after bumping into you in Tobermory! I had planned to buy a Hoverair for that holiday, but held off after the rumours around the Neo emerged. Question, would you buy the basic drone or the Fly More package?
Hi Rick - sorry I rushed off, it was great meeting you and I hope the rest of your trip went well. I’ve not really considered this. You’re going to want more than one battery and the FlyMore comes with a good charge cradle. I’m not sure if the regular controller works with the Neo but the FlyMore comes with one. It’s really good for scenic shots and extends the range you can fly. Will fit well in your bike.
Hi, you've reviewed the Hover Air X1, not very long ago. I guess DJI brought out the Neo quickly after in order not get get overtaken by HoverAir. I would greatly appreciate if you could do a HoverAir X1 vs DJI Neo trial video. As both drones look very similar. Many thanks.
@@alwaysanotheradventure I understand. On the other hand, as both drones have very similar features, it would be very helpfull to have your honest opinion
I've had the X1, had lots of fun with it for cycling. At this moment I think the Neo is the better buy. It's much cheaper. The only downside is the size. I love the foldable design. That's the reason I've ordered new the Hover X Pro. It's faster and 4K and yes I know....more expensive 😊
@@19ab59 Just to be clear - have you actually ordered the X Pro? Or have you helped to fund it on Kickstarter in return for an X Pro? My understanding is that there are none yet being delivered. I could be wrong which is why I'm asking - thanks
I got the neo and found a problem, it cannot be used indoors, because without GPS it will crash as it needs very good lighting, if you fly into a slightly dark area it crashes. it cannot be used outside in the dark, and by dark I mean early evening, without good GPS it gose mental. This was not a issue with my Avata 2 as it has better sensors, also not a issue for my mini 4 pro. Shame as I was hoping to fly it around my house as a small FPV.
Why cannot you use it outside in the dark (using RC-N2/3 or Goggles3)? It will use GPS and does not need good lighting. Of course, you cannot get good footage in dark...
@jakobergson At the time it was close to a building and didn't have GPS. Bit scary when it decided to keep going up when I wasn't touching controls. I was useing goggles and motion controller.
Thanks Simon, you've just convinced me to buy yet another camera, Just ordered the new GoPro, now I need the Neo. Great review. Quick questio, just how noisy is it? I guess a lot more than the Mini 3 pro drone?
No - I think I it’s quieter Graham. 79db says DJI. The shot in the woods where I’m talking - I mix in the noise from the Neo. It’s relatively quiet and it’s very close to me (so it didn’t hit a tree!)
It appears as if u were getting light sporadic rain in the video.Water & electronics never mix well.Any problems with Neo and water entering inside getting on board?
Interesting - the HoverAirX1 was obviously the inspiration for this but it looks better. The new X1 Pro and Pro Max look pretty good - but this is tempting for the stuff I do. Thanks.
I’m told 18mph but obviously wind has implications and it was windy all the time I’ve had it!! Flies faster forward (ie following) rather than tracking backwards.
Simon, if you're still monitoring comments and you have time to reply, would you be able to answer two questions: Is it water resistant, and can the battery be recharged while it's in the drone? USB charging?
Wonderful video. I'm ready to purchase one but I don't know if I need extra batteries or rely on a fast charger to charge the drone by USB-C. Will the drone accept a higher wattage charger and, if so, how fast can a 65 watt charger charge a single battery? Thanks in advance!
I really don't know the answer to that, sorry. Probably one for DJI themselves and their engineers. The 'FlyMore' package has a useful cradle for three batteries and the controller.
Hi. I just saw another review of the Neo (by a reviewer whose name I think was FlytPath) and he said that supplying the DJI 3-battery hub with 60W would charge all 3 batteries from 0% to 100% in just over an hour.
Thanks ! Your videos convinced me to get the X1 ! Did DJI insist that they didn't want any comparisons ? Is it me or is the Neo's video a bit "choppy" ? Looks/feels like 10fps...hopefully it's the editing and/or YT and/or my laptop...
We all like a different look and I will do a comparison video. For me X1 wins on portability because it folds, and the new Pro and 8k versions could be awesome. Neo wins (for me 😁) on video quality due to 4K and better stabilisation, although it does that through the body of the craft - the gimbal is still just 2 way. It has better battery life and when using the controller it flies almost like a regular drone. For my type of videos the Neo wins but it could be a use case scenario.
@@alwaysanotheradventure your video is choppy because you uploaded 25fps video to RUclips, but NEO creates 4K/30. Also RUclips uses very bad compression for 1080p... And your video is not 4K.
Thanks for the detailed review! I've been using the HoverAir X1 which looks like DJI's inspiration for the Neo - and the X1 has the added advantage of being foldable, but otherwise has pretty much all these features (and already has a side track mode). I mainly use it for clips from hillwalks and cycling trips, mostly for instagram so I don't need the highest quality, but HoverAir have recently released the X1 Pro and Pro Max versions which include better cameras (including 8k and a bunch of other improvements that I don't really need) - I'd be curious to hear if you have tried the X1 and how the Neo compares in your opinion?
I was one of the first to get the X1 ahead of release which is probably why DJI included me in the Neo. I can’t give a quick comparison- that’s another video - and I’m not sure the two new Hiver Air are released yet. They seem to be on Kickstarter.
@@alwaysanotheradventure I'll look forward to the comparison video - noticed a lot of people talking about the new X1 Pro models on the HoverAir sub on Reddit so wondered if they would have sent you one ahead of general release for review 🙂
Hi Mike - I’ll put my flyer ID on it to make sure but I’m cautious about answering these questions here because the videos stick around and rules change, plus they’re seen in different countries where rules can be different. Always safest to check - in our case with current CAA rules. When connected to the phone you do get geo-location information and flight area details.
I haven’t fully committed to that - just in case David. We’ve had such strong winds and bad weather I wouldn’t have flown any drone over water in the last few weeks. Getting decent weather to shoot has been a challenge. I’ve come close though - yesterday on Jura over a beach and tide line - so I’m going to say yes. The Neo knows where it is through Geolocation and can execute Return to Home. X1 is dumb and can only locate its relative height with downward sensors, and these get confused by reflections over water, snow or rough grassy ground. If going over water with the Neo I’d want to be operating it with the controller, not palm or phone, as the range is longer.
@@alwaysanotheradventure thanks for responding so quickly 😊 By the way we're up near you next week. Packrafting and hiking near Loch Nell / Oban. See if you can book us some good weather please 😂
David - let me update that because you had me wondering. The geolocation comes via your phone app, it's not built into the drone, that's how it knows which flight area you're in. Neo only has those downward sensors too, so I guess it could get confused. I'd only risk it when linked to the DJI Controller.
I've watched dozens of tests and unboxings of this DJI Neo, almost everyone emphasized that it's a selfie drone. To this day I haven't seen a tester upload any selfie photos from this drone. add some photos and videos to download.
OK, fair point and I should have realised, sorry. It's a good idea to shoot a video and allow the uncompressed source files to be downloaded. Leave it with me. Crazy wind and rain here right now - makes flying the Neo impossible.
@@alwaysanotheradventure have u tried mate? As other youtubers have said it will ect, using the active track on the controller? I have a mini 2 se and its the only feature i really wanted for the car, If not may have to upgrade in the future to the 4 pro lol
Brilliant. I think that you and Stewart & Alina should team up about doing a dual Neo video. Got mine and learning a LOT about adjusting the settings to get better video with the PRO features on the controller. Hope these features come to the app soon! Have a look at their videos ruclips.net/video/OAacVVs8Rho/видео.htmlsi=G0N_URehUJMFJUJw
Thanks - I've been in touch with them. I watch their stuff and was hugely chuffed when they praised this review in one of the first comments. I used to shoot a lot of stuff with big cameras so I understand the 'switch to manual' ethos. That said, it kinda destroys the purpose of these drones which are, effectively, point-and-shoot.
That's fine, but hard to judge when 4k is downscaled to 1080 on my timeline, then I compress it for RUclips, then YoutTube compresses it for streaming. It ends up looking very different to how it starts, but if you don't like it then fair enough. I think it's fine.
Tracking is still worse than Hover Air. Can't put in normal pockets. Oh even tracking just few feet next to you, the GPS won't let you fly if it's anywhere close to geo fencing. So, what actually it's useful for or better than Hover Air? Well it's only useful if you want to fly tiny whoop fpv, otherwise, waste.
@@alwaysanotheradventure I procrastinated for a while and I found your review really helpful and purchased 1 last week. The weather has been too bad here in the NW to do much more than a few test shoots but so far i have found it easy to use and the video is good enough for what we need, which is short videos of our walking and hill running whilst out in our camper van. It seems perfect for what we need. The only 2 minor issues I have found is that the battery life is very short and "tracking" feature doesn't seem to work very well (even after the recent firmware upgrade) but for the price its excellent.
@@vocabswitch I'm pleased the video was helpful and let me have a go at the other points - battery life and tracking. If it's windy, the effort to fly against it will eat battery life. when I was shooting my video it was windy, so I waited for a calm day to shoot most of it. It also seems to require more power to track you from the front, owing to the Neo having just one axis in its camera - that means the whole aircraft changes its orientation to keep you in shot. Combine that with some wind and the battery goes faster. That combination of factors can often explain the tracking issue. If it happens, and you're asking it to track into the wind, try turning around through 180deg and test it again - these wee drones are happier flying with the wind. But yes, sometimes they throw a wobbly! The most reliable way I've found to make it track me from the front - assuming you're sorted out things like wind direction - is to connect the phone app, hold it on my palm at face height so it recognizes a 'human head', then press the big green button on the fly app. I have quite a few short videos where it just immediately swung behind me to track from the rear, but then I just landed and set it up again.
@@alwaysanotheradventure Thanks for the reply Simon. Yes I will keep trying and there is a very good chance it is user error! I found the same as you, it started in front but then tracked sideways then behind. I will persevere 🙂

Simon? Is there an update on the new features and tracking speed improvements? Mine arrives later today - I bought myself an extra Christmas present,- and I am curious to hear your views.
I’ve not flown mine for a while - busy with other videos, sorry
Nice video explained the neo well. can I ask what trousers they are ?
They’re AlpKit Koulin Trail running tights.
alpkit.com/products/koulin-trail-tights-mens
👍🏽good stuff, I ordered this, even though I ordered the hover air max-why not💯👍🏽
I’d love to know how they compare
For someone who rarely follows the development of these drones like me, the jump in consumer friendliness in just a few years is wild!
Absolutely- all the folks who criticise various elements seem to forget it’s cheaper than a GoPro and it flies!
excellent review ..well done
Thank you kindly!
Great review. Well done
Beautiful country. Thanks for posting this video.
Excellent review very informative thanks for sharing this with us
My pleasure
Wow mate, you are effing fit .
I bought the Neo last week but i had to also buy a second hand 64bit OS phone,as the app will NOT work on a 32 bit phone system.
BEWARE ANDROID USER'S !
GREAT DRONE FEATURES ONLY BAD THING IS THE CAMERA QUALITY AND DONT HAVE OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE...IM THINKING TO WATE THE NEXT VERSION OF NEO THANKS FOR THE REVIEW HAPPY FLYING❤
NO NEED TO SHOUT
I think you forgot to mention you could also use the dji RC2 controller💯👍🏽
Very nice review. Thanks
I can't wait for the Neo version 2, with a better video image quality and a frontal obstacle avoidance. 😁
Thanks for the great review. 👍
Yes, the best time to buy tech is always tomorrow
@@alwaysanotheradventure 😀✌️
Could you please put the link in the comments to the compressed video comparisons?
I’d rather people watch the video - that way I receive a tiny wee payment from RUclips for the effort I put in.
Nice video, is there any chance they could add vertical video via update?
That's probably a question for DJI but it's easy to make vertical videos like this cut-down from mine ruclips.net/user/shortsDfBcuHGq1_I The 4k file is easy to crop into the 720p most vertical formats like using something like CapCut
Nice. I've not flown a drone for few years, used to have the spark, and enjoyed that. Been thinking of getting a mini pro, this is tempting me now.
Very Inspiring...would love to do similar style filming...❤
You should!
VERY good review. Thank you so much! I'm looking to buy one and wanted the truth.
You might want to stick around until I do the comparison with the X1. It’s very much a use-case scenario as to which is best.
I will. It didn’t feel right to include a comparison in the very first video.
@@AndrooJeanPierre ruclips.net/video/2Y47XWZxgaM/видео.html There you go Androo
@@19ab59 Just to be clear - have you actually ordered the X Pro? Or have you helped to fund it on Kickstarter in return for an X Pro? My understanding is that there are none yet being delivered. I could be wrong which is why I'm asking - thanks
That's a great device. Can we do a full comparation with your old hower x2?
Yes, soon
@jakobergson
At the time it was close to a building and didn't have GPS.
Bit scary when it decided to keep going up when I wasn't touching controls.
I was useing goggles and motion controller.
Cool beans! Great review.
Well spotted - it doesn’t have an XP rating but it was fine. I landed it soon after so it didn’t get too damp.
Sorry. What was that Rode mic you plugged into your phone?
Rode Wireless Pro
@@alwaysanotheradventure oh. Cool that it connects like that. I have one of those. 🙏
Great vídeo
Hello how to take picture on the air? Thank you
I don’t understand the question?
Looks cracking Simon
Interesting - the HoverAirX1 was obviously the inspiration for this but it looks better. The new X1 Pro and Pro Max look pretty good - but this is tempting for the stuff I do. Thanks.
It’s a use case scenario and until those two new ones are available I’d go for their Neo
Great overview! How fast can you ride and have it follow you?
I’m told 18mph but obviously wind has implications and it was windy all the time I’ve had it!! Flies faster forward (ie following) rather than tracking backwards.
2 weeks it only come out a couple days ago
They sent some to RUclipsrs early - hence lots of reviews with lots of content
Simon, if you're still monitoring comments and you have time to reply, would you be able to answer two questions: Is it water resistant, and can the battery be recharged while it's in the drone? USB charging?
I’ve flown in light drizzle but there’s no XP rating. Yes the battery can be charged in the drone - you don’t need the cradle.
@@alwaysanotheradventure Thank you. Appreciated. Stay safe.
Looks a great piece of kit. Does it comply with restricted flying areas? And do you have to register it in the uk?
Hi Mike - I’ll put my flyer ID on it to make sure but I’m cautious about answering these questions here because the videos stick around and rules change, plus they’re seen in different countries where rules can be different. Always safest to check - in our case with current CAA rules.
When connected to the phone you do get geo-location information and flight area details.
Hi, will it be able to track individual in a crowd?
I don't know
Can you do basic editing of the footage on your phone?
Not in the Fly App. Just use CapCut and you can do a lot on your phone.
Still paying my mini 3 pro off and for the price of one of the monthly payments I can get this lol
Can it be used over water? That wasn’t allowed for the Hoverair?
@@DavidMackenzie Sadly I think it's changing after Monday, but you;ll have a great time anyway
😂 thanks for ordering me around. That’s obviously the best way to get someone to cooperate.
@@alwaysanotheradventure Sorry, my English is poor, I didn't order, it was supposed to be a request. I wrote it wrong, sorry.
OK, fair point and I should have realised, sorry. It's a good idea to shoot a video and allow the uncompressed source files to be downloaded. Leave it with me. Crazy wind and rain here right now - makes flying the Neo impossible.
How does it compare to the Hoverair X1 (?)
I’ve answered than in another comment and will do a comparison video.
Can it shoot vertical vídeos?
Not yet but easy to crop (see my short on this). Vertical platforms don’t need 4k so there’s depth of video to crop.
Yah! so good , see you later!Always, 👐
Great review, thanks. (But it’s not an independent review if they sent you a free drone. )
I understand why you say that but please read the Pinned comment to understand why I will insist it’s independent.
Nothing more than a drone to get you hooked onto drones
Will it track a car
No - just people
@@alwaysanotheradventure have u tried mate? As other youtubers have said it will ect, using the active track on the controller?
I have a mini 2 se and its the only feature i really wanted for the car,
If not may have to upgrade in the future to the 4 pro lol
I haven’t tried but I specifically asked this question and was told no.
I’ve read that the dji works better with iOS? Android users are complaining about the app not working 😮
A quick search and it seems the Fly App has a history of issues with different models of Android phones, especially Samsung.
Brilliant. I think that you and Stewart & Alina should team up about doing a dual Neo video. Got mine and learning a LOT about adjusting the settings to get better video with the PRO features on the controller. Hope these features come to the app soon!
Have a look at their videos
ruclips.net/video/OAacVVs8Rho/видео.htmlsi=G0N_URehUJMFJUJw
Thanks - I've been in touch with them. I watch their stuff and was hugely chuffed when they praised this review in one of the first comments.
I used to shoot a lot of stuff with big cameras so I understand the 'switch to manual' ethos. That said, it kinda destroys the purpose of these drones which are, effectively, point-and-shoot.
For that price very good. However, the point that Neo does not sense obstacles, should be noticed.
Agreed - as shown in the video when it crashed
NOT compatible with all phones. Not with mine. If i want the Neo, i have to buy ALSO, a new phone compatible......
Scary when it loses control watch this video: Dji Neo CRASH Drone TOTALLY CRAZY NO CLICKBAIT
Hover is much better in my opinion
If you’ve flown both for a while then great. I’ll head to your channel and look at the videos.
I have to admit that the video quality is really bad, even worse than a spark. Better skip this one and purchase neo2
That's fine, but hard to judge when 4k is downscaled to 1080 on my timeline, then I compress it for RUclips, then YoutTube compresses it for streaming. It ends up looking very different to how it starts, but if you don't like it then fair enough. I think it's fine.
@@alwaysanotheradventure in this case what's the point of testing new device and now showing full camera capability?
Precisely because it shows how it looks on RUclips
@@alwaysanotheradventure Why you downscaled it? Please publish it in 4K!
@@jakobergson Thanks for your interest
Camera absolutely blows so no interest here
🤣🤣🤣
Tracking is still worse than Hover Air. Can't put in normal pockets. Oh even tracking just few feet next to you, the GPS won't let you fly if it's anywhere close to geo fencing.
So, what actually it's useful for or better than Hover Air? Well it's only useful if you want to fly tiny whoop fpv, otherwise, waste.
I couldn’t agree less. It’s a use case issue. For me the Neo wins. And I wouldn’t dream of doing. flips and ticks. For you, clearly not.
