  • This is a video of the El Diente Peak to Mt Wilson traverse and from Mt Wilson to Wilson Peak traverse in one day 22 miles, 8500ft gain that took us 13 hrs to finish. Started from kilpacker trailhead at 3:00am to the El Diente south route use microspikes once or twice to cross small snow patches near the top made it to the summit by 7:00am only spend a couple minutes and jumped into the traverse all the information I gathered here helped immensely as we didn't get lost once and stayed right on the route lota of exposure in some areas like the Narrows, and lots of class 3 and class 4 moves but rock stable and solid. Made it to Mt Wilson at 9 am took a 5-minute break as we contemplated what me and climbing partner had talked about of traversing to Wilson Peak as well, it looked very far and very intimidating, but we had weather and time on our side and decided to give it a try. Went down the North route of Mt Wilson to about halfway and traverse below Gladstone peak to its north ridge connecting to Wilson peak traverse below the ridge was very unstable rock I released by mistake a couple big chunks of rock super sketchy terrain eventually we made it to the ridge and rock was more stable but super exposed and many class 3 and 4 moves and no trail orany info to follow because there is none here or anywhere we stayed on ridge as much as possible this was definitely tougher than the el diente/mt wilson traverse. We finally joined the SW route of Wison peak and summit this one at 12:20pm spend 10 minutes here and absorbed everything we had just done and starting heading down as weather was turning. Went down the Navajo basin route and at the end crossover to kilpacker trailhead where my car was at 4:00pm. For GPS route check out my Strava at "the ninja on the mountains".

      So, how easy was it to pick out the best route on the El Diente-Mt. Wilson traverse? I note on 14ers.com you said you had gathered a lot of info - can you point me to particular trip reports, by any chance? Driving down tomorrow, hiking into Kilpacker, then hope to do El D>Mt. Wilson on Monday. Thanks. You can email me, too, if you would like: claybonnyman (a) gmail.

    Everything about this video is great. Camera, music, narrative, editing, information and links provided. I appreciate all the effort you went to to both make these ascents and put a film together to share with us. I did Sneffels a week after you did this and I believe I will NOT be trying these. I'm too old and it above my fear threshold. It's a young man's game and you crushed it. Great Job!

      the first traverse the rock was pretty solid and although intimidating has good holds, the second was pretty loose had to test every rock before putting all your weight luckly wasn't as long, Thanks for watching I have a couple more traverses like this to do before the end of the summer

      the camera makes it look a little narrower and steeper than it actually is because is a round lens, but i did try to catch must important areas of the traverse

    That is one helluva day!! How was route finding from Mt Wilson to Wilson Peak?

    • @Theninjaonthemountains
      @Theninjaonthemountains  3 года назад

      the hardest part was gainning abck to the ridge rock was really unstable I and loose once on ridge I followed the ridge as much as possibly because rock was solid few areas had to go around right or east side

  • @coltonschrisp

    Nicely done! Congratulations, and great video! Curious why you chose Kilpacker approach vs. Navajo or Rock of Ages? Are there any benefits?

    • @Theninjaonthemountains
      @Theninjaonthemountains  2 года назад +1

      I figured it was the shortest approach and since we were thinking of doing all 3 from the beginning and you can make it a loop coming down navajo and cutting across to kilpacker again there was a little gain there at the end, but not too bad

  • @alfredpinkerton277

    Excellent work fellas. I'd like to do this route. Can you tell me how you had your camera set up? I have a go pro and I think it came with a helmet mount. But seems you had the camera zooming in from different angles. I'm pretty sure this wasn't a drone, but also doesnt look like it was mounted to the same place in your helmet. Really really awesome video.

    great video guys! I'm doing all the San Juan 14ers next week and this trio (besides for the 4 in the Chicago Basin) is probably the toughest day hike. Was the descent off Mount Wilson pretty straightforward down to Navajo basin? I plan on going up Kilpacker like you guys, hitting El D, traversing, then dropping down off Mount Wilson then up the southwest ridge route for Wilson peak, then back Navajo

    • @Theninjaonthemountains
      @Theninjaonthemountains  Год назад

      yes, decent from mt wilson is pretty straight foward, most dangerous part is traversing around gladstone lots of loose scree. I agree I gotta go back to chicagi basin and I m dreading approach last time I did it from purgatory on bike and it was one long day was only able to tag 2 of 4

    • @HikingEngineer
      @HikingEngineer Год назад

      @@Theninjaonthemountains Well so my plan was just to descend Mount Wilson the "standard way" and then regain the elevation up to Wilson Peak. I didn't realize going on the ridge up/around Gladstone was the way to do it. I realize that way you don't lose/regain as much but seems like it might be sketchier?

    Hard pass on these mountains; I can barely handle a little incline when I run! You sir are an absolute animal. Is your adrenaline running the whole time you're on the mountains?

    • @Theninjaonthemountains
      @Theninjaonthemountains  3 года назад +2

      Is not easy at all I used to be afraid of heights, but like goggins says you gotta do what you hate the most to get better at it and callus the minds. such adrenaline rush up there I can ride it for days. This particular climb we drove 6.5 hrs to get there only slept 1 hr and after a long day hike drove back the 6.5 hrs because of the adrenaline high alone.
