    It's very helpful when the mountain designers color-code the different rock zones to facilitate route-finding for mountaineers. It's almost as though they anticipated the development of color video cameras.

    I left Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl elevation 12 and flew to Denver two days ago, Wednesday. Drove to Leadville, Co and spent the night. Got up the next day and started the South Trail of Mt Elbert. I went up over 14,000 feet. Storm was coming so i turned around. No altitude sickness at all. No headaches, dizziness, or nausea. Pretty good for a 60 year old man. Very exhausting. Not able to do Mt Massive today. Legs are jello. Very enjoyable and I envy all the people in Colorado, what a great state to live in. Beautiful.

      Michael -Turner Riley Great you made it over 14k, but awesome you had the awareness to turn around. Mountains will always be there and yes we are very lucky to live here!

    I heard what happened on Gannett. Hang in there friend. Your response to those events here on YT was appropriate and from the heart. Thanks for what you do.

    Enjoyed your video and felt a comradery with you as I, too, did this climb solo (as I did 49 other 14ers and all their classic traverses) roughly 35-40 years ago. Differences, though, were that I gained El Diente straight up the north face, had most of the traverse behind me when I watched the sunset and decided I better not try to complete the traverse and summit and descend Mt. Wilson in pitch darkness, so I descended straight down the north face again. Of course I was in pitch darkness by the time I was back in the forest, so to not totally get off track, I just laid down, covered under my space blanket, and caught a few winks until early light to finish my journey. One more golden memory of the climb was, after hiking pretty much nonstop up into the all-rock zone, I was beat and drenched with sweat when I came to a stream flowing through a rock channel about 3-4 feet deep, stripped down and had the most refreshing, ice cold rinse-off ever!

    I just started tackling 14ers. I've gotten in sneffels, grays & torreys and massive. Heading to evans and bierstadt next week. I love seeing new peaks and more challenging treks. Thanks for doing the recon 👍

      Are you giving yourself any time to acclimate in Colorado before the hikes? If not, then you'll probably face some amount of altitude sickness. If you're lucky, maybe just a headache, but there are worse symptoms to worry about. Just take it easy, know your limits, and be smart. Neither hike is particularly hard, but they are both pretty long. Massive especially you spend a lot of time above tree line, so be prepared with tons of water and sunscreen. Good luck and be safe.

    • @turnerroberts843
      @turnerroberts843 5 лет назад

      @@rthomp03 yeah thanks for the advice. I'll take plenty of water to drink. And stay covered up from the Sun. I want to test my self against altitude sickness. I want this to be a stepping stone before I go down to Mexico and try to climb the Pico de Orizaba. It is 18500 feet. So I'm going to try these two and see what happens. I'm walking miles daily with a backpack with 30 to 40 lb just to get ready and condition myself. I'm looking forward to the test. I will let you know. You're alright.

    • @cidevids
      @cidevids 5 лет назад

      rthomp03 I used to think acclimatization was something that happens quick but on my way up Blanca with a buddy after 4 days of him being here from FL I had a HR of maybe 120ish and I took a radial on him at over 200. You can mitigate some but the adjustment hits like a ton of bricks all the same.

      @@cidevids focus on the goal. I want to win. It is that inner feeling of win that will help me summit. 59 and a lover of life.

    looked pretty sketchy! nice views and vids. what shoes are you wearing?? also what water filtration are you carrying if you don't mind me asking?

    • @TheVirtualSherpa
      @TheVirtualSherpa  5 лет назад

      TBH, I have not found a reliable hiking boot yet. The various terrain here seems to rip through a number of different boots. Right now, I am wearing these: www.sportiva.com/men-s/men-s-footwear/trango-trk-gtx.html, which I have had for 2-3 months and have been holding up okay but not great with about a 100 miles of hiking on them. For water filtration, I use an old Katadyn Pro.

    How would you compare this to La Plata's Ellingwood Ridge?

    • @TheVirtualSherpa
      @TheVirtualSherpa  2 года назад +1

      Comparable - lots of loose mess but in general far less route finding and higher class moved than Ellingwood. The trolls love to act like Ellingwood is straight forward but if you stay ridge direct (as you should - it’s a ridge traverse) I would say that Ellingwood is a bit more tricky
