My uncle used to race these boats back last 60's 70's. I was just a toddler at Long Beach harbor watching these races. His boat number was E85 - I'll never forget. This video brings back a TON of great memories!! He had a big block chevy 350 in his. When he would fire it up the day before the race the entire neighborhood would reverberate! Man the sound of those open headers. What a great day out for a kid. Thanks for posting!!
Reading some of the comments. LOVE HOT BOATS. My dad went thru 2 Hondo Flat Bottoms. I grew up with the noise, as my dad would work on it and ran it in the garage. They are the best boats to ski behind. We all had live belts / vests. Simply the best. BASS LAKE, CA forever!

Thanks for uploading this, I love tuff boats that are family fun boats as well. Very noticeable difference in ride characteristics with them too based on hull driveline and motor mount. I still love a traditional centre mount, direct drive and motor facing forward not backwards, exhaust through the transom and a screen of some sort, even if small. I love the older 60's 70's & 80's boats, got a lot of cool & are collectable classics now!
What's amazing is despite your paranoia all of these kids survived! (video is 10 years old) And all the adults came up boating in the same manner and they (obviously) survived too. I do agree, that life jackets aren't a bad idea but I also believe society has become ridiculous trying to regulate every little thing we do.
My dad used to take us to the boat races and Watkins Glenn when we were very little and we couldn't wait to go back . It's called ways to enjoy life as a family . Picnics and fishing were normal weekend lifestyles . Today's family doesn't exist because everyone is doing their own thing . I vote we return to the simple family life !

Great video. Good to see the families enjoying the hobby. I'm glad to see some of the adults wearing PFD's. If you are going to get in these fast boats and open it up, everyone on board should be wearing PFD's. I knew three people that were in a boat on Havasu going about 100 when they crashed. Sheriff dive team found them...at the bottom of the lake. Wear a PFD people.

Growing up, my dad had 19' with a 392 hemi. Sounded amazing. He would let drive, wrench on it, and ski behind it. Only thing he said no to was fishing from it.

I learned to water ski at age 5 behind one of these on lake Mead. Back in the 60's and early 70's 18 foot flatbottom boats towed speed skiers in the ocean race to Catalina island and back. Big boats are only necessary for individuals requiring all the creature comforts of a cruise ship. If you like Hot Rods and Hot rod boats stay small, light and powerful just like Hot Rod cars. Back in the 60's and early 70's people used these style boats pulling water skiers from Long Beach to Catalina island and back 50+ miles. That's right, 26 miles into the pacific ocean! I'm not saying these make good ocean boats but, I grew up skiing behind 1 of these on a little puddle called Lake Mead and never had a problem...just sayin.

If you're so fragile that a little engine noise is unbearable, hopefully you'd have the common sense not to build a house along the river or move into an existing one. Outboards serve a purpose but they're not cool and they sound gay so I'll pass. :)
Couldn't you put a higher ratio drive on a high tq engine such as a diesel? To get more speed at a relatively low RPM. I suppose there's weight to contend with as well.
@G Riv Yes, but only a handful of shops are doing it. Most of these boats are from the 60's and 70's. Scott Steele in Phoenix will build you a Biesemeyer flat or a Rayson Craft semi v.
I haven't been in too many flats, but in Tulsa for years Steve Carbone,yes, the former nhra top fuel champion was hooked up with Lloyd K Stevens of the Oklahoma fixture company. They ran usac, world of outlaws, sdba, drag boats. Mr Stevens was elderly but loved speed. He had to of the boat pilots killed in a three year timespan. I think one was a blown fuel hydro and the other a blown fuel flat. seeing as many things go afoul on engines in my lifetime, I don't think I would let anyone ina v-drive without a kill switch, a good jacket that wlill float head out of water and maybe even a helmet if it's time to play Once a flat starts to lift, I don't think there is any way to stop a blow over. To not take basic safety precautions may look way cool to an idiot but it doesn't impress anyone else at all.
These boats are 2 feet longer than a 57 Chevy Bel air! It's not that these boats are small. it's that people falsely believe they need a 10 ton 40 foot barge to go boating. Toss out the excess power robbing freeboard and join the world of Hot Rods on water where just like the pavement, it's all about power to weight ratio not "fluff" like lighted drink holders, bimini tops and ipod docks and an engine you can't even hear because its weak or covered up. lol
I grew up with a boat like this which was before the life jacket law. My Dad didn't drive stupid with us in the boat and I'm still here to tell you about it. I have kids and I sorta understand your point but I do feel like you're over reacting quite a bit. Thanks for watching.

vdrivevideo yeah righto but where I live I have waves and go out to sea for the whole day with dogs and kids and a barbecue. These things look so fragile and cramped.
We go for the whole week and leave the bbq on the beach. I grew up with these style of boats and never felt cramped... They're very strong and some have been around and are still in use since the 1950's. These boats were used for speed ski racing out in the ocean for a few decades. They aren't good for open ocean recreation, but we don't use them for that.

vdrivevideo yeah righto but where I live I have waves and go out to sea for the whole day with dogs and kids and a barbecue. These things look so fragile and cramped.
We go for the whole week and leave the bbq on the beach. I grew up with these style of boats and never felt cramped... They're very strong and some have been around and are still in use since the 1950's. These boats were used for speed ski racing out in the ocean for a few decades. They aren't good for open ocean recreation, but we don't use them for that.
