  • Join Kyle's Dad, Dave Conner, once again for a fun filled EV road trip in his Hyundai IONIQ 5 Limited in Shooting Star Matte paint where he travels over 1,350 miles from Marco Island Florida to Darien CT alone with his awesome road tripping pup "Bailey". Watch as he meets up with his daughter Katie and her friend Allie in Tampa for a great dinner on the water at the Salt Shack. See him check out Pedro's relatively new DC fast charging installation at South of the Border in South Carolina. Dave gets to know a super awesome couple from Quebec, Canada as they charger hopped in sync for a bit. This brave couple took a high range/low speed charing Kona EV on a long International trip from Quebec all the way to Florida. He also chats with Bolt owner Brad in Gainesville who was solo road tripping it from Florida to Raleigh.. Dave had a great time meeting everyone at the various charging stations along the way including the people from CT who bought their ID.4 at Curran VW in CT (same dealer where Dave got his AWD MoonStone Grey ID.4 from) who are soon moving to Florida. A special shout out to thank Brad (with whom Dave met in Gainesville FL) for his dedicated service to our country...
This video contains all the charging data for each session embedded throughout. It also includes a wrap up summary for the entire round trip Dave in his IONIQ 5 logging in excess of 3,800 miles over a 2 week period of time. You will find the summary data displayed on screen towards the end of the video.

As someone in your age demographic, let me say that I really enjoy your videos. I obviously like what Kyle puts out, but I really appreciate your perspective , especially since I feel like I’m about at your level of understanding the tech. I haven’t taken the plunge to full EV yet, I drive a RAV4 Hybrid, but I think my next car will be fully electric. In the meantime, please keep filming for us “older” folks!

It is so nice to see another road trip with the best EV Presenter. You are a natural and it is a pleasure to see you again. You make the whole presentation so relaxing and just a great pleasure to watch your road trips. I hope you do more in the future since it is a relief to get away from the circus clowns calling themselves EV professionals. You are one of the few presenters I enjoy any more. I watched other ones who had to add political content and it turned me off immediately. Thank you again for your professionalism and keep up the great work you do.

In your recap of charging sessions, it would be great to also show the amount of miles driven. This gives an idea of time between stops, and the ability to easily calculate cost / mile for those of us considering the switch.

  • @tbdylan

I think the reason the Georgia pricing is so much cheaper for you around 43:16 is that the pricing is time-based instead of kwh-based. So it's much cheaper for a fast-charging car like the Ioniq 5 but is probably more expensive than others for slow-charging cars like a Bolt. Interestingly if you get blocked out of a 350kW in Georgia, not only are you charging slower but it's costing you more!

Dave I want to thank you for your funny trip from Florida back to your home in cT. I am a first time EV owner currently living in Columbia SC. I ordered my Ioniq 5 from Pensacola Fla. I am a single female and by watching you and your son Kyle videos I drove my SEL back to Columbia with no worries about running out of power. Now I had to take a different route than you because Pensacola is in the western part of Florida but I drove those 8 hours like a pro. I had one small problem coming around Atlanta Ga on I85 but I had a contingency plan, which was to call a tow truck and take her to the nearest charging station...but the car was smarter than me. I over shot my charging station by 30 some miles and told the car to go to next station well she turn me around to go back to the one I had passed and like me I said no Im not going back toward Atlanta and turn myself back around heading towards Columbia SC told it again to set my next charging station and she said and I quote " you will not reach your destination that's way she was turning me back to the one I passed. I travelled during the week day and I was able to hit the 350 kWh all the way home. ( tried to get the Limited but I think I would still be waiting). Thank you so much. I enjoy your videos . do you know if the SEL have auto sensing windshield wipers?

There's a couple of issues with EA stations. I've been to EA stations that were arranged so poorly that some of the charging cables wouldn't reach my chargeport. The other issue is that with most EA sites I've been to, at least one charger (out of 4) was out of service. On a road trip on Friday, I stopped at the EA chargers in Paducah, KY and only ONE charger out of four was working. ONE!

Great road trip, we in Canada have Electrify Canada (division of EA) reliability not so much on some stations, example Salmon Arm BC, could not initiate charge on 2 of 3 - 150kw chargers, the 3rd only delivered 33kw, so I plugged in to the last remaining 350kw and it delivered 76kw on plug in, so moral of the story, not all Kona / Soul EV or e-Niro with maximum charge rate of 77kw are blocking the fast 350kw chargers un-intentional when the Station has 75% of the chargers are down or partially down. Another point is if you CCS charge leave the dual CVS / ChaDemo station free where possible for those Leafs or older Soul EVs

Nice to see a EA station not at a Walmart but just because you're an EV doesn't give you the right to block a charging station even if there isn't any other EV's there as in future there will be and it may not be a good scene possibly even Police called.

Love the video. Wanting to get the EV6. Confused somewhat on my calculations for your trip. Calculated at 30mpg and roughly 4.50 per gallon your total cost for the trip in gas would have been approximately $550.00 Granted you saved some money with free gas, but a regular paying customer for that trip didnt seem to have saved a whole lot. Always thought it would only cost you about 1/3 of what gas would've cost ya. Naive on my part perhaps? Or did i miscalculate, or both? Still, I cant wait to get my EV6. Thanks for the video, i had fun.

I believe that the drop in charge to about 1 or 2 kw (meaning the car isn't charging, really) its a temperature thing, either battery's too hoot, or car is keeping it from getting too hot and cooling it down to charge at optimal speeds? That's what it looks to me from watchign several charging curves (Kyle's, Tom's, Bjorns...not that I"m an expert).
I was goign to get EV6 and had a nice matte grey one picked up, but then, a cyber grey IONIQ 5 appeard in a dealer withing driving distance (about 190 miles) from me, so Yeah. Kinda like interior on EV6, but the looks of the Hyundai, along with the larger interior room, better designed rear seat (it slides AND reclines), along with the more powerful V2L (3.6 kw instead of 1.9 on North American EV6s), and the fact they're harder to find... I'm getting the IONIQ 5!

  • @volcalstone
    @volcalstone 4 месяца назад

I thought the free charging was only up til 30 mins per day so your charges later in the day shouldn't of been free as you stated.
1:05:03 the fact that he didn't plug into the 150kW station from the beginning shows that he ain't trying to change a damn thing by not plugging into a 350kW station with his Kona. I'm not sure if the 350kW station was the only one that was opened at that time but still move over if a 150kW is opened later tho.

So, you told the Hyundai guy that his car can only charge at 77kw. He thought he'd never see you again, so decided to still use the 350 as he knows best... I bet when he moved to the 150 and saw exactly the same pull through, he learnt the lesson.

Perhaps. Nice people for sure and were willing to learn; small language barrier to blame perhaps at first. But in the end, as you say; they got it!

The manufactures should partner with EA to have the software gently remind someone when they plug-in they could use a lower rated unit and still get their rated input.

Great road trip! The time lapse music was awesome, please let me know the artist/tracks you used 🎶🤘
In the future, I would calculate the EA pricing by the Pass+ ($4/month) membership at $0.31/kWh. If you charge at least 33 kWh at EA, the membership will pay for itself. It's really a no brainer to sign up for the EA membership whenever you're going on road trips.
43:00 The cost of electricity wasn't cheaper, it's just that EA was billing per-minute instead of per-kWh. For very fast charging cars, per-minute billing is comically cheap and really unfair to anyone else. Per-kWh pricing is the fairer way.
55:00 What you're saying about billboards for Pedro's reminds me of billboards for The Thing in Dragoon, AZ. There are billboards up and down I-10 and even some on I-25 in New Mexico.

Thank goodness that I don’t have to watch the other guy who I typically see doing these videos bumping his eyeglasses a thousand times per video. That may be an exaggeration as I can’t stand his videos and don’t watch them very long.
    Good job here, thanks !

David, your car does not look like any "space ship" I have ever seen. I do like the looks of your car and the color. I think they should have increased the battery size another 5 to 10 kwh and that would allow more charges skips.

Dave, loved hearing about your road trip to Florida in the Ioniq 5! I live here in Utah with my wife and we have an Ioniq 5 SEL. Over the Memorial Day weekend, we drove to Phoenix and back. We covered 1,488 in the 4 days using the Electrify America charging network. Since we have been home, we have noticed that after we have used our level 2 charger, that we are no longer getting up to the 300 miles on a charge. Have you seen a difference with your Ioniq 5 since you have gotten back home?

Dave, is there any way for you or Kyle to reach out to Electrify America with a suggestion to have all 350kw chargers have an educational announcement on the welcome screen? Perhaps featuring an ever expanding list of current EV's that can charge above 150kw. Something to the effect of --
"Please be courteous, unless your car is listed below do not use any 350kw unless there is no other option available, as your EV will not charge any faster on a 350kw charger than on a 150kw. Thank you for your courtesy."
LIST OF CURRENT ELECTRIC VEHICLES CAPABLE OF CHARGING HIGHER THAN 150KW:
    Porsche Taycan
    Hyundai Ionic 5
    Kia EV6
    Audi E-Tron GT
    Lucid Air

The 350kW chargers need different markings than the 150kW units and also different pricing.

At 42:06 you speak up the lower cost in Georgia but the issue is that Georgia does not allow charging fees by the kilowatt hour except for utilitie companies due to their regulations. You can see it on that screen that they charge $.32 a minute which is a great deal if you have a car that charges quickly, however if you had the bolt EV for instance then it’s better to charge find a charger that charges per kilowatt hour delivered which is really the most fair pricing model, Except when you consider blocking a charger in which case charging by the minute has its advantage.
