    I'd like to see you leave the car out overnight and not charge it, then select a charger more than 30 miles away, then drive to the charger and let the car turn on the preconditioning as you get close. That way we could see what it would be like for someone traveling to a charger with a cold battery to see if it gets warm enough by the time you get there.

      Good idea. There is an EA about two miles from my home, and the next closest is ~ 100 miles away. I charge at home on L2, so EA is relevant to me only on road trips.

      Also, do it like a normal person would. Precondition cab for 10-15min, hop in, drive 10-15min to the nearest charger, blast it. If this doesn't get it to the point to accept 200kw then, THAT is what they need to achieve for mass adoption to ever happen.

      I did it with mine. Left it for 2 days in Lake Tahoe. Below 30F. I then drove back to so cal with my first charge stop in Bridgeport. Preconditioning turned on about 40 minutes out from the charger. Plugged in and immediately got 190kw.

    I have a '23 AWD that came with the battery pre-conditioning. ECO mode was always very slow, I don't use it very much but I wouldn't call it bricked, I always just assumed that minimizing energy use meant you sacrifice acceleration.

    • @ATICrossX
      @ATICrossX Год назад +3

      Exactly, if you do lots of accelerations, I guess it would save some energy. In real world I doubt you would save much energy compared to normal mode, maybe it's worth testing in city 😀

    • @59317
      @59317 Год назад +2

      The old (better) eco mode would still limit acceleration, but when you really pressed on the pedal it would still give you safe, usable acceleration in a passing/emergency situation. The new mode won’t. It’s not safe. Hyundai seems to agree.

    • @icebergzero
      @icebergzero Год назад +2

      @@59317 I totally get that not having the acceleration there for you when you used to have it is not safe but those of us '23 owners never knew any difference so we used it when we wanted that extreme efficiency. For me, the ability to switch drive mode so quickly, (drop the left thumb), means you can get out of any situation you need to quite quickly. I disagree with Kyle's assertion that this bricks the ECO mode. Its all in how you use it.

    My father purchased an IONIQ 5 at my suggestion, having watched Technology Connections and other RUclips videos. (It's a 2023 RWD so it came factory-standard with preconditioning.) He's taken it on three road trips now (two with me) and we love the car. It's roomy, very well designed, drives well, charges well. Many reviewers are calling it "the perfect car". And I think it's close to perfect... but the software is an achilles heel. Hyundai seems to be way behind everyone else in software design, especially when it comes to EV features. The trip planning in the car is very rudimentary, has poor awareness of charging speed and no awareness of stall availability. And preconditioning performs as you see here, along with the lack of over-the-air updates.
    If Hyundai can get better at EV software, they can dominate the market.

Don't pay anything! Also the car needs to be on the latest software update for the nav system. I've heard of at least one driver on Facebook that didn't get the nav software update from the dealer and had to do it themselves at home to actually get it working. Also, no need to scroll on the nav system to try and find the charger. Push the "search nearby stations" button in the right lower corner of the nav system and select a DC station. Way easier! Alternatively search along route or vicinity of destination to put a DC station as destination.

    In our ‘23 SEL you have to navigate using the “POI” menu and “EV Charging Stations” and select one in the list to get it to precondition. If you put it in favorite places and navigate to your favorite it will not precondition! And in the ‘23 models it’s a red heat coil on the screen-not a snowflake in the lower left of the main screen. One more valuable note: you can apply filters in those POI charger database to quickly narrow to a specific electric charging network provider or charger type (e.g. EA stations only, level 2, DC fast etc.). But still hobbled by the “near me” or “near destination” search options. There is an “along route” search option BUT it will only give a handful of options and then stop loading. We can always get preconditioning going but it shouldn’t be this much work. Come on Hyundai!

    • @JeremyJensenTheOriginal

      I second this. POI + Filters = totally usable experience.
      I did a 7 hour road trip, had the internal nav set as my destination. It alerted me that I won't have enough battery and to select a charger on my route, with the filter set to only show the fastest chargers it showed one that I was a couple hours away from... Selected it, and went on my way. After that charger, I once again had the alert I won't have the range required, so I selected the next EA station 100 miles away.
      The built in nav isn't intuitive, but once you learn how it functions it's actually pretty good overall. Though I agree with the video that it'd be nice to just manually tell it how many miles/minutes I am from my charger to manually activate it.

    Here in Scandinavia we have had the update for 3 months or so now and certainly on the EV6 and definitely no “ bricking” slowing down in Eco mode. Whether this is an ioniq5 thing or not I am not sure? But EV6 all fine. You can also put the charging stations in as waypoints whilst going to your final destination. This sort of works like a rudimentary route planning with charging and it will pre-condition the battery accordingly. Works great but just have to know how to do it correctly. Which to be honest Kia/Hyundai have not done a good job of explaining? Yes a manual override with a lower SOC would be soooooo much simpler. However I believe it is just a basic test bed currently with improvements a long the way🤞. Love the vids👍. Ps. The ioniq guy is a top man also when it comes to info on the E-GMP cars. 🙌

    To give Hyundai some credit, they are providing the battery preconditioning update to the early 2022 AWD models that did not come equipped with it. They’re doing it at no charge to owners. They were not obligated to do that. Also Eco mode does not completely disconnect the front motor. From a stop, even with very modest acceleration, the front drive wheels are engaged up to 12-15 mph. They’ll also engage if climbing a very steep grade at a steady speed. Anyway, I am scheduled to have the preconditioning update done next week along with the tire rotation. I am not too worried about the change in Eco mode. I am a slow poke.

      Normally yes, if you roll on it hard in Eco, it will engage fronts again. But sounds like this update might be making it stay disconnected and not engage. If you look at the dash when he turns around and floors it, you can see NO power going to fronts... That is why it was so slow.

There are no excuses from EV Manufacturer for NOT allowing preheating of the battery. One of ther most hated things about the Chevy Bolt is the slow charging in summer let alone winter, what a huge opportunity for GM to addrss at least ther winter charging as it would just take a handful of software enguineers to add pre heating to the bolt.
    GM will never add a faster charging rate for the bolt 100kw-15kw , just wont happen as that will cannibalize the upcoming equinox sales. But they could at least address winter charging rate viza battery preheating.

Genesis might be different but it seems anything related to battery management, etc are engineered to be updated by a service technician using ECU firmware rather than everything on OTA/user infotainment updates. Glad to see this option, living in Wyoming it is something I think is must have. And not to distract much from this needed upgrade but being a senior driver I hope there will be some of it used to keep the pack warm in cold so even if your just driving 100 miles and back home your range isn't killed by cold pack for the whole trip. I know you talk about speed bursting the vehicle to warm the pack before you trip, but it would be nice to see the system warm it up to say 50 degrees while your on the road especially in sub zero weather. And talking about old people and road trips. I have a great idea for a use of some of that federal money and this might only be in states with long distances between towns but I generally travel in daylight and need rest areas often so why not add solar panels to rest stops with some level 1 or maybe level 2 charging. Wouldn't need a battery system but just a day time setup. I take about 1 to 1.5 hours to rest and stretch. It wouldn't be much but 10 to 20 miles increase could be nice and even if I just used it to heat/cool the car while I nap would be a great deal. A battery temp indicator on the display so I don't need to use an OBD dongle and a phone app, and a manual selector menu so I/ME can turn it on when I want to. Include auto cutoff when the Bat reaches optimum temp. BTW I got 82KW charge only once when the Bat was at 26C naturally, but normally never more that 42KW. Common Kia/Hyundai lets get on with it.
