  • I got to visit Neil Roberts, the illustrator for Black Library's Horus Heresy series. Neil's work spans the entire 64 books in the series, and given the narrative is beloved by so many in the hobby, it was really exciting to meet him and hear how he first got involved in the project and how he became the sole illustrator for the series. We also look at his artwork for the first 4 books in the series:
    - Horus Rising (Book 1)
    - False Gods (Book 2)
    - Galaxy in Flames (Book 3)
    - Flight of the Eisenstein (Book 4)
These videos were made in my spare time, and if you wish to pop a donation my way to help support me it'd be greatly appreciated:

Great interview, I've never seen the full cover art pieces before without the titles so it's amazing to have them recontextualised by seeing the hidden parts. The great unclean one in particular is class

Yea! Most (if not all) can be found online or in the Horus Heresy art book Black Library released.

Thank you for this interview! Neil Roberts in my opinion has shaped the look of the heresy just as much as John Blanche and the forgeworld team. Absolutely iconic work. I’m always thrilled to see his new works for BL

Wow, it's THE HH artist himself - didn't even know how he looked like until now, great work again! 🙏

great interview! neil's style is iconic, painting something to look cgi is something else. absolutely scrambled to get that art book with the full works printed in it. I adore how detailed he makes space marines. So much heraldry and iconography. This is such an amazing documentation of heresy as an endeavour. Its an amazing setting and story, but how it came to be as we know it now is as equally, if not more, interesting.

Great interview. I love his work! I hope you've got further interviews in the works covering each and every one of the other 38,997 covers in the series!

Great interview, again. I don't even have much of an interest in this corner of the ip but still enjoyed it a lot. Neil seems like a great guy

The books in the upper left corner (Next to the brown old looking ones) are series by a Polish writer Jacek Komuda. Were they translated into English or is he a Polish speaker?

They are great book covers, and still stand up to this day.
His comment about the plan was for 3 books... wish it had stayed that way. Enough information, and retain the mystery of the main events. As it is, the series is too bloated.

When creating art for an existing IP, changing things to “put your mark on it” and betrays a very narcissistic personality. And giving them long hair because he’d just watched lord of the rings is poor use of artistic license imo.

@@Filmdegminiatures sure but then that’s not really saying much, especially going by the inconsistent creative direction around that time. Most of the old guard had retired by then and GW was essentially being run by the sales/marketing department

When an interview says "Yeah, sure!" it really feels like they are not really interested in what is being said and want to move the conversation on!
