OSAP BACKGROUND
The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a financial aid program that can help you pay for college or university. OSAP is the main source of financial aid for post-secondary education in Ontario.
OSAP offers funding through: 1) grants: money you don’t have to pay back & 2) student loans: money you need to repay once you’re done school.
OSAP is available for both full-time & part-time university and college students. You can only be eligible for OSAP if you don’t have enough money from other sources to cover your college or university expenses. The income that you report to OSAP generally needs to match what you reported to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) when you filed your taxes.
OSAP ELIGIBILITY
OSAP is open to Ontario residents of any age who are:
• Canadian citizens
• permanent residents, or
• protected persons
You may not be eligible for OSAP if you:
• don’t meet the academic progress requirements
• have enough financial resources
• report income on your OSAP application that’s significantly different from your taxes
• have defaulted on a student loan
• have grant or bursary overpayments or multiple outstanding loan overpayments
• failed a credit check
• declared bankruptcy or consumer proposal, or consolidation orders
• are an international student

Yes you can apply before starting the program. In our experience, they don’t check the amount of savings students have but you must agree to submit factual data.

Each year, your financial need is calculated based on your tuition fees and other educational costs, living expenses and what you (and your family, if applicable) are expected to contribute. So just because you have "savings", doesn't mean it will negatively impact your OSAP eligibility. Especially if those savings are not expected to be used towards your tuition payment.
@@CampusCatalogue could you please give an example where the savings are not expected to be used in the tuition expenses?
From our experience, universities don’t expect you to use 100% of your savings on tuition. Students could keep money in their savings for unexpected medical bills, surprise vehicle repairs etc. OSAP applications are more focused on your income and your contribution from savings account. We don’t expect OSAP will question whether your contributions from savings are too high or too low.

Hi Because this will be my first time applying for OSAP, I have some questions.
1/ I have to fill out the application first before applying to a school that I want to go or I have to get in school first and apply later on
2/ I have an amount of money in a saving account, would it be a factor affect on money received from OSAP?

Do you think receiving osap can effect EI benefit? And how can one just take the grant, not the loan or pay back the loan immediately without having to wait to complete the program? Much appreciate your answer
Your OSAP should not affect your EI as OSAP is a loan. EI could affect OSAP as it is a source of income. You are eligible to take the portion of the loan that you wish. You are also able to pay back your OSAP loan prior to finishing the program or at any time (for those choosing to graduate debt free). Hope that helps! What if you do a summer job? Do u have to report it to OSAP?
Income from a summer job would be reported on your next application for OSAP funding.
Which all amount from that estimator list, would they be paying to me ? I mean they have different sections right , tuition fee, compulsory tuition, books, travel and living.
In the estimator they shows a final in total amount, is that for entire program or for an year or for term. (For the records I was trying for 4 years bachelors degree)

What if someone does a diploma and then goes to uni how does he get osap for both?
You would submit an application. The review process will take into account what your financial status is and determine eligibility. Previous education credentials should not influence eligibility.

No, you have to be a Canadian citizen

Yes
A bit of missed information. You make one time payments during school study periods on your loan. Some people do this, so after they graduating they pay less and less cumulated interest over time. Their is also an option to opt out of the loan and receive only grants or the option to use grants directly on your loans.

If you fill out an application, you will get an estimate for how much you will receive.
What's the percentage of the federal and provincial portion of the loan and what are the interest rate of the corresponding portion?
60% federal and 40% provincial. The current interest rate for both is 2.75%.

Only the federal portion of OSAP (60%) will be given to students studying internationally.

You will have to disclose how much financial support you will receive from your family for the purposes of your education.
So we need to pay OSAP back within 6 months of completion of course 😮😢
You can apply for an extension over and over again if you are approves aka have no job etc.

By applying for the loan you are automatically considered for the grant. You can refuse any excess loan amount
