Lex totally hit it on the mark. This is a throwback of the guitar sound of British bands like The Kinks, The Who. It was just great to hear guitars again in music. At the time you had Aussie band Jet, The Vines and others reviving the sound.

one reason this guitar driven sound got popular was when their debut record was released in 2001, the charts were dominated by Boy Bands and Britney and Ricky Martin and early Eminem... so the guitar interplay on this record was a welcome return to rock for many fans.

There was rock at the time, but it was mostly nu-metal, which is was very bad, with bands like Limp Bizkit, Korn, Linkin Park...The Strokes and the White Stripes (the Strokes first) kinda killed this genre, and it was a great thing for music. It gave un so many great bands, and it's still the case today.

The Strokes, and arguably Franz Ferdinand, pioneered early 2000s indie rock along with the White Stripes. They brought a back to fundamental riffing rock sound with a new cool aloofness to it. These bands were the bridge to the new age. My fav indie rock band is Bloc Party which took a more post punk, angsty route around the same era.

There were way too many boy-bands, they flooded the airwaves almost as if it was being force-fed to you and shoved down your throat, causing a lot of people like me to resent modern music.

There were plenty of guitar driven rock bands doing better than The Strokes in 2001. The Strokes weren't a threat to the artists you mentioned. Creed, Blink 182, and Tool were competing on that level. Strokes got popular not cause they had a 'guitar driven sound'.. it's was the throwback garage rock ethos that made they (and the others in that wave of awesomeness like The White Stripes) stand out.. but those artists didn't dominate even in the world of rock at the time.

Lex has got it down again. Very intuitive feel for music. This was very much a 'throw back' style even when it was released back in 2001. The Strokes were absolutely dripping in vintage indie retro rock cool. You really should review more songs from their first album. Preferably before they end up on TV commercials so people can at least say they heard them here first.

The Strokes! This is one of the best modern alternative rock bands out there right now. Very good 2000s alt/indie rock, post-punk, new wave/dance-rock, garage band from NYC. They are an old school rock feeling band. Kinda proto-punk feeling. Lex is right! Very late '60s, '70s, '80s sounding. They remind me of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Ramones, The Stooges (Iggy Pop), The Velvet Underground (Lou Reed), Talking Heads, MC5, The Cars, a little like early U2 (at times) , early The Pretenders, The Kinks, etc. Yall need to check out more of The Strokes videos/songs! Many hits from them. They also throw very good concerts. This is a very successful group and they have a huge fan base.
Other modern bands like The Hives, The Killers, Interpol, Bloc Party, White Stripes, Artic Monkeys, The Vines, Franz Ferdinand, Libertines, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric ( a little more new wave/synth heavy though) , Silversun Pickups (little more shoegazy/psychedelic like Smashng Pumpkins, though). etc are like them. Check them out as well!
.Other songs/videos from them yall should dive into are Reptilia", "Someday", "Hard to Explain", "When it all Started", "Soma", "Heart in a Cage", "Take it or Leave It", "Alone, Together", "Trying Your Luck", "New York City Cops", " The Modern Age", "12: 51", etc. Yall might have heard their songs on radio or on tv, movies. Also look at concert video of MTV $2 Dollar Bill Concert, it was from the early 2000s, very cool.
They play their music and sing like that intentionally BTW, Lex. It's punk rock influenced. lol. Unique jazzy crooner like Frank Sinatra, Danzig, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop. Also, Brad, all of The Strokes videos are like this kind of old school feeling and funny. They are great musicians, yall are right. This song became a hit BTW a little after 9/11 (fall of 2001) . Weird timing.

Lex is correct, it’s “throwback,” and after this song hit big and ton of bands that sounded similar, lo-fi / Garage-Rock Revival, flooded the “college radio” airwaves, and bands like Jet exploded into the mainstream the sound was so popular.
Other songs to check out: The Libertines, “Time For Heroes” & “Can’t Stand Me Now”; Jet “Cold Hard Bitch,” “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” “Rollover DJ”; The Von Bondies “Shallow Grave” & “C’mon, C’mon”; The White Stripes, “Dead Leaves On The Dirty Ground,” Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Date With The Night” & “Maps.”
It is the official video, but even official videos that are actually live, (unlike this one which is staged,) have the official-album-audio.
Their second album is a little different. The 2003 follow-up to Is This It, Room On Fire, features a slightly different sound while still being the throwback people were introduced to. “Reptilia,” I believe is the big single off that but there’s also “Meet me in the bathroom,” and “you talk way too much.”

Good ear, Lex. When they came out in 2001, they combined beloved music and influences that were not mainstream from the 60s and 70s and 80s and made it sound modern at the time. And it was just such a welcome sound! I saw them live and they were awesome. A few bands that come to mind spanning all those decades are Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, the Violent Femmes, Camper von Beethoven, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, and a whole lot more.

There's a good reason for it sounding as rough as it does. The plan was always to record the official video as this live clip, but they couldn't get it right and started getting frustrated and having some drinks while doing take after take. This is the one that finally made the cut. Needless to say Julien was more than a little tipsy by the time this take was recorded, definitely not acting! Also yes to the two main recommendations people have been giving to listen to next - Hard to Explain and Reptilia are both bangers.
Also well worth checking out is lead guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr's dad, Albert Louis Hammond. A super talented songwriter, singer, and artist, who has written songs for the likes of Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Chicago, and Willie Nelson.

It's funny how distance can make you hear something different. I loved this album at the time but never kept up with the Strokes after that. I remember all the talk of the Velvets/Lou Reed being an influence, and garage rock and the UK bands the Who and the Kinks, and all that's true, but listening again to the way Julian smushes up his voice against the mic, I also now hear Iggy and the Stooges. If you can, look for Iggy Pop's live version of "The Passenger" at the Manchester Apollo, and you'll hear what I mean.
Anyway, I've rarely encountered someone who has more of a pure instinct and feel for music (both its sound and its era) than Lex; she is spot on so often it's almost eerie!

The Strokes to me are if Tom Petty and the heartbreakers had a child with The Ramones.

I would say Lou Reed and the ramones. Tom Petty is way too melodic...

@@davidzieglmeier1020 strokes are pretty melodic too mate. In many of their songs there are several different hooks. Absolute earworms

This isn't the actual version from the album. Don't think it's live though. The album/single version is quicker.

You should check out Under Cover of Darkness by them. It always seemed to me like it was an updated cover of an old swing song. And please go with the official video version, it's pretty cool.

Your fascination with this means you must do The Velvet Underground (Rock and Roll, or Heroin), then The Rapture (House of Jealous Lovers).

Every Strokes album has a handful of great songs, but Last Night and Hard to Explain from their debut will always be classics.
