Subscribe for new videos every week. I'm in the process of making two bathroom vanities for a relative and thought it would be a great opportunity to show how easy it is to make a simple slide out tray for any cabinet. You can use this method in a kitchen, bathroom, or even a shop cabinet for tools. I would use better slides if you want to use them for tools though.

I LIKE IT SIMPLE AND EASY TO DO
I love it, it gets straight to the point & is simple.
(It doesn't start off with music, logos or any other bullshit people put at the beginning to waste time.)
lmao ifkr??
I couldn't believe it. Deserves a sub off the bat
Thanks for the video. I think I will do this to my kitchen sink cabinet as its a pain to reach to the far back of it to grab something in the rear of the cabinet. This add-on to kitchen cabinets is fairly costly, but you can do it for a fraction of the cost. Just be sure to check out the weight specs of the slides so you don't over work them.
Thanks again. I made a few of these and came out great! I also used John Heisz's advice on installing the drawer glides. You make a great team.
Ma Deuce haha. Thanks. John is a cool dude.
Very helpful. Thank you. I will do the same for a jewelry sliding tray.
I come from Taiwan
Thank you very much Jay,
I really like your video
It helped me a lot
Great Video.
Great work, thanks for the plans.
Francisco Corona You're very welcome. Thanks for watching Fancisco.
Awesome video Jay - detailed but short and sweet, great work. Question - could this same slide out tray be done as a pantry with 4-5 trays "stacked" - I'm thinking I'd just build the side frames then the 1x2's inside at each tray. Am I under-thinking it?
Looks good
Gijs Boskers Thank you.
Hi Jay I was curious how your going to finish the cabinet. Paint or with stain? Also are you making raised panel doors? I would really like to see some other videos of this cabinet as you complete the project. Great job!
dpscott000 The project is for a relative who chose pine with early american minwax stain. I'll spray a coat of lacquer after that. Full video on the build as well.
I know this is crazy but the whole time I was like. "Cool I want to see it pull out .... Ok, it's the wrap up ... Ok it's almost over ... surely he's going to .... dammit!"
You bested me this time Jay Bates ... OH WAIT, IT'S AT THE VERY END! WOOT! Thank you for feeding my OCD.
Joel Crawford lol. I had to speed it up because my lav mic wasn't recording and the stock camera audio sounds painful. Make it a chipmunk and nobody will know!
Same here. I'm like,"When is he going to pull it out? He's not going to! Jerk". Then he did.
Excellent video.
Have u ever thought about doing a project video for shanty 2 chic's projects?? Maybe they would pay you to make videos of their projects to help promote their site? Just a thought for ur business.
By far the easiest and simplest vid on building these that I have seen on the net! Thank you!
Wow Jay...
You are not only a smart practical carpenter, but you have become one of the best videographers on RUclips. These brief videos pack a TON of useful info into a dense super-concise format. If schools operated more like your videos, we would have a more educated populace.
I could not say it any better. Very good video!

I like the fast forward effect in the tutorial, I hate watching people drive a screw in real time...
Did you always have that nailer or did you just get it? Get vid! Thanks for sharing
i made a cabinet/work table for my small basement workshop and used this to great result. I made a slide out tray for my 3 gallon compressor (on the bottom like your example here) and also a deep drawer (9'') above the compressor for plastic tools like feather boards, pusk stiocks and my grrripper. I've seen all the cideos and can't wait for the next one.
This has come at just the right time. At our age getting to the bottom kitchen and vanity cabinets is becoming difficult. Purchased a couple slide outs online. Good quality and easy to install but unbelievably expensive. Been looking for a way to easily build some for awhile and I think this is it. Any chance of doing a video on a second shelf? Thanks Jay, always enjoy your videos
Jay, Ive subscribed to your video cause I heard you were giving away one of those T-shirts to your newbies :) What'd ya say?
Seriously, I am new and Im enjoying what Ive seen so far. I was going to install a set of the very expensive rollers in my sisters cabinets to achieve the very same affect....that was until I saw what you had done. Thanks so much. Now SEND ME THE SHIRT OR ELSE!!!....just kidding:D
Great work as always but the last bit I could not understand, I haven't heard that language before even Google translator couldn't do it :-) Thanks.
I used this method and it worked brilliantly and I cant draw a straight line with a ruler!
Very cool Jay! I tabbed away from what I thought was the end of the video, and the sped up part at the end startled me. Ha.
Oops!... Let's try again...where did u buy the framing square?...LOL word complete!.....Gus
Question, when you talk about glue are you talking about Elmers glue? 5:26
LOL at speeded up gibberish at end. (I was wondering if we would get to see it work)
Great except I already have fitted cabinets so not so easy and I have bad knees hence why I want slide outs. Putting my thinking cap on but all helps thank you.
I think I used those exact drawer slides and I hate them, the little wheel kept catching on the screws, so I had to grind them down. Did you have any problems like that? I think I only allowed 7/16" of clearance for each side.... Thanks Jay
Oiii, adorei seu vídeo, parabens!! tbm tenho um canal onde falo sobre faça você mesma, casamento, maquiagem, unhas, tags, resenhas e receitas. Da uma passadinha lá e depois me diz se gostou, beijinhos ;)
Great great job. Describe what you are going to be doing, fast forward through the construction. No music and hand held camera angles. Funny ending!
Subbed.
Which is the software you use for making the plan? 5:43
I tried using those Euroslides on some of my projects and I just found them to be cheap and flimsy. I decided to just invest the money into the full extension ball-bearing slides. Things go together so much easier with those, at least for me.
What would you recommend for adding a shelf to the bottom of a old dining room table that I use as a TV stand but under I use to store all my automotive tools and detailing stuff. In other words, its heavy stuff so what would be heavy duty enough for 200lb of tools?
So the stiles do not always have to run top to bottom uncut? Trying to figure these things out, as I have not built any cabinets yet. Just a few bookshelves. I was under the impression the rails joined to the sides of stiles?
Back at the cabinet shop, we called these roll-out shelves. They were a $50 add-on option for base cabinets. We did a lot of them in kitchen sink bases - usually on the left side, for some reason. About half of them also incorporated a trash can holder. Easy to make and, as you said, the cost is pretty low.
Rusty Pup Nice. I was going to make a trash can slide but in the end decided they can upgrade this if they want
Hi, I want to make internal drawers for my wardrobe. Any suggestions how to make? Thanks
Can I use this method to make drawers ? Because I don't have a table saw. Also do you have any tips for an attic closet ? Thanks
Thank you for your clear and plan explanation as usual. I am a little intimidate in doing drawers, always afraid too wide or to small for space between guides.
I will follow your suggestions and try to make it right.
Ciao from your italian fan
Chris
I don't have any intention of making a vanity anytime soon. But I always like watching anyways because I always learn something. Half way through the video I realized that this would totally solve some storage issues under my bathroom and kitchen sinks. I already have slides. Already have plywood. Thanks for the idea.
Is it possible to create this sliding shelf on a metal rack? I have a muscle rack I'm looking to inatall sliding shelves in
Is there any damage if i screw without drilling.?
Wish I'd heard your comment about being able to do every cut with a circular saw before I convinced my other half i needed to buy myself a table saw........but then.....now I've got a table saw! 😁😁😁
dumb question but should I stain the wood before I install the brackets?
How great would it have been if you had demonstrated the shelves in action.
something I'd like to see: tall narrow cabinet slide outs. about 4' tall by the width of a spice bottle and/or vegetable can. I have an old coat closet I would like to convert to a pantry with these slideouts....thanks.
What do you think about the Ryobi brad nailer you use? Thinking about getting one but always like real people reviews. Also, great video! Thanks!
Ive been wanting to do something like this in the kitchen. Interesting little bit at the end too! I was readng comments and suddenly heard angry chipmunks!
TheTinkerinMan haha...they weren't angry...they were hyper
Titles video Slide Out Cabinet. Finishes cabinet, doesn't slide it out. lol
Great video. Right to the point. I will definitely be doing this in my new bathroom vanity.
So I glanced away for a bit when I thought your video was over, but was drawn back when I heard a chipmunk chattering while you were showing what you had placed in the new drawers.
Muchas gracias Jay es facil y sencillo de realizar y necesitava ver un buen ejemplo y este me será de mucha ayuda... :)
This was great and I love the inexpensive price fir a great look! 1:22
I just wanted to say thank you very much for all your photos photos and videos that you share with us it really helps on some of the projects that we do so thanks for all the plans being free. Looking forward to more videos and tutorials thank you again
Jason Baldridge Very cool Jason. Thank you for the feedback and I appreciate you watching.
Enjoyed the concise informative video
Thank you
Looks perfect would work well in my vanity for laundry hamper.
Great vid JB. Where might i found the framing square? I like it.....Gus (aka "TheWoodWerker")
Quick, easy, inexpensive and highly useful ! Just about a perfect project !
For what it's worth, I thought the wrap up was fantastic. Showing what is the minimum required toolset vs what you used and how it's easier is a great approach. I know many of us novices have a limited number of tools so knowing what we can expect helps! I've grown my tool collection to make life easier but this was a helpful bit nonetheless.
Hey Jay, great video. Question, do you like your cordless nailer. I'm in the market for a nail gun but I wouldn't need a compressor for anything else anytime soon. I'm actually not sure how much cordless ones cost I never really thought of that as an option. They always sounded underpowered to me.
Thank you (todah). I want to do this. The real Name of the Creator is Yah. When we say halaluyah, we are saying in Hebrew, highest praise to Yah.
Good clear video, and I have made these using his directions. Plan to make some more, too..
Nice job I have a mud & utility room remodel coming up going to be doing something similar
Jay, You're a very good teacher and an inspiration. I was tired of my shelf and pegboard mess in my garage and instead of making drawers or cabinets I made a 48" bench about 42" high and 24" deep against the old messy wall. I've made the sliding shelves as you have done here. I still have pegboard above (even more actually) but with deep sliding shelves, they hold more supplies with easier access. BTW, I downloaded sketch-up but it didn't speed up this particular project. I was spending so much time trying to learn the program that I decided to just go cut some wood and get started (finished). I've been watching the tutorials on sketch-up as well as your videos, and I wanted to thank you for your contributions.
Do I have to have base pieces for like green stability, or can I simply screw drawer slide hardware into my cabinet and a shelf piece?
Awesome....About how much weight would it hold?
Thanks for the idea. I'm actually in the middle of a workbench project that I think could use this feature, maybe on one side and make two drawers for my smaller items. The other half of the cabinet could be left as an open cabinet. Seeing how you used the hardware explains the process. I've not done this before.
athiker7209 Glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching.
Thank you. Your video helped me make a giant slide out shelf for our kitchen!!! Wifey approved!!
best "to the point" video. simple and precise! thanks
thank you !!!!!!!!!!!! so glad to see you respect your audience by moving quickly through this.... love it... will be making these in a few weeks.
thank you now I will make some for my kitchen cabinets and drawer slides I can get cheap at harbor freight
Wow... this is the simplest version of slideouts ever.
Seems easy enough when you do it but I would screw it up somehow (Haha). Nice "quick" tip at the end also. Thanks for sharing.
you were right simple simple simple i need to do this for my elderly mother so she doesnt have to crawl around on the floor when looking in her lower cabinets thanks for the idea
Are the air-driven fasteners structural or are they just to keep the wood together until the glue dries? What size fastener did you use? Good job! This is the best, concentrated video on making roll-out trays!
Mike Nestle The glue will do the long term holding. The nails will hold it in place until the glue dries.
Very nice Jay. They would be good in the shop cabinets. Thanks for the video
Backyard Woodworking Thanks Roland.
Jay, many thanks. I needed this idea for an Ikea hack. U B The MAN
What's with the 1x2's on the sides? Why don't you just buy some "floor mounted" slides that you screw straight down into the material it sits on? That would be one big step out of the way.
Because these were the better product for the job. Less expensive, easy to install, and available locally.
The simplest, easiest explanation I have seen. Thank you so much. Shelves don't seem so intimidating anymore!
Sped up video editing like you do is genius! thank you for not making us watching it real-time! Nice job.
Thanks Jay. Great video as always and an inspiration. Hoping you might post a video on the cabinet build as well...?
Great video and you made it to where you could see and understand what you were doing. Thank you.
Am I the only one that was waiting for Jay to demonstrate the finished shelf? What a tease!!!
You're a very practical man Jay. I love watching your videos. Do keep them coming! - All the way from Singapore
Perfect and to the point. Thank you.
The stores want about $50 for 1 tray. Ridiculous
And you included free plans on your web site!! You're the best!
Great Video - Simple to follow - straight to the point - Hope to see more. Thanks
I love how you sped everything up and cut all unnecessary portions from the vid. thanks!
I have NO idea why ANYONE would thumbs down this project. They probably have NO idea about construction OR tools.
Thanks, Jay, for posting this. Great speaking voice, great speed-ups,... top notch!!
TrapperJohn5719 Don't worry about the thumbs down. They mean nothing anyway. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching John.
An old video that has the best and simplest explanation of the project.
Just came across your channel and I can't stop watching your videos.I grew up making little projects with my father and it's been a passion of mine ever since.I'm considering making my kids bedroom sets thanks to your inspirational videos.Keep it up man!
Nicholas Vasquez It's very nice to read that. Thank you and good luck with the kids bedroom :)
mr rambo REALLY?
I've been looking for that bit to do small pilot holes for drawer slides or hinges. What size or kind is that one?
Usually u just use something smaller then the screw you will use in the hole. About the size of the core, not the threads ;-)
You're looking for a vix bit. It's a self centering bit used for drawer slides and door hinges. They come in different sizes depending on the screw size.
Derek Hall Derek is right. Mine are just a cheapo brand. I think I paid $5 for a 3 pack.
Hi Jay: thanks for the video, some very useful tips and ideas, cheers Harry
Excellent, definitely doing some of these when I redo my bathroom vanity.
why you didn't slide at the end? :)
You make my process of screenshotting with captions on for future reference a lot more valuable
A+ Nice video. Clear, excellent video shots, to the point.
I am looking into getting one of those battery nail guns like you use here. how well do they hold up and work?
firebreatherkb I've had no problems with mine.
Just wanted to say I love how tightly you cut your video edits. It keeps it moving.
BTW, new subscriber, you make it look easy...
