Would you want to watch the full 45 min chat between Travis and I? I'm thinking about putting the whole thing up as a standalone video. Let me know and I hope you enjoyed this one! 🤘🤘
Same here! That's one of the main reason we want to see studio videos... To hear everything raw in the studio with and without music. The engineer can talk about all the technical stuff in his own episode.
He might not sound good during recordings.. idk I haven’t found too many live footages of him live on a studio level 😬. Love Travis but hiding his recording processes are telling all in itself. Still much respect towards the band...
Ryan G you ever been to a show in person ? His voice sounded better live than studio all 3 times I’ve seen them, the mics they use for videos are just shitty
that color coded and fully annotated lyric thing is INCREDIBLY smart and easy, especially when moving them around after recording them without having to listen to each one 20 times
Thank you for putting these videos out. As not only a huge Cattle Decap fan but also an audio engineer as well, it is super inspiring to see the process of what goes into making an album for them. I love it when a band cares that much about the process that they are willing to put in the hours of dedication to make sure their music is heard by the listener the way it should be. Keep up the great work!
What a great series! I'm not generally a fan of videos detailing the minutiae of someone's processes/gear/etc., but your clear explanations keep it interesting. Really looking forward to this album!
This sounds very familiar ;) You're def one of the most hands-on and efficient audio engineers & producers in the game. Stoked to work with you again, my dude!
I agree with Dave. The album is a masterclass, a masterpiece and a defining moment in Death Metal. I have been a metal fan since I first heard bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin etc. I have a variety of tastes in styles, genres and bands. With this album I find that I am drawn to it by some mystical force. I personally feel that this is one of the best albums of the last twenty years from any genre. Big call? It is but I call it how I see it. To me this album is a gift that keeps on giving and I cant stop listening to it!!! Is it a concept album? Not sure. Is it a statement piece? Absolutely and thank the universe for that!! Power on and can't wait to see how the lads will top this.
Watching these vids makes me appreciate Death Atlas all over again. Such a massive and varied album, yet maintaining the ugly truths and grinding craziness only Decap can come up with. Hell yeah.
the last thing that I recorded for my band, i did the same thing you guys did where you split up the tracking, for me i started with lows and then went back and did all the highs and it helped me a lot while tracking
These are awesome, thank you very much! I would have liked to see a little more recording but that’s just the kid in me, your information was great on organizing and planning a mix of this complexity.🤘🤘
Never in my life have I heard another band with such enormous talent like cattle decapitation. They are one of those bands that never disappoint and the progressively get better and better
Awesome! This provides some really amazing insight into the world of putting an album together. I admire how you were able to tailor things to how Cattle works as a group, how Travis operates as a singer, and make the experience less like herding cats, and more of a 1 on 1 where each individual is highlighted to strengthen what they bring to the mix. That in itself is pure talent, and definitely why you make the big bucks lol.
As a studio engineer who's recently started year 2 in university on the subject and recording some bands, I was really intrigued by the vocal recordings. I've always been amazed by Travis' range. Brilliant video.
Great video again Dave!!! Was wondering after the album drops will we get a video of travis in studio laying down vocals? Like we did with harvest and monolith.
The band and Metal Blade should be releasing their own studio BTS videos that might have more of that kinda stuff. I'm usually kinda busy during that part ;)
I was really hoping to hear some of the takes like on the Monolith video but oh well Another solid one man! Would you be willing/able to go over some of the mixing aspects? I am pretty heavily influenced by Travis and I do some melodic segments as well whenever I'm messing around with different styles and I would love to see how mixing those differs from standard screaming. Getting them to sit, how many layers are really going on, just overall advice. Would be pretty cool to see
I started listening to Cattle right recently and man the vocals are fucking brutal. and this video just sums up what it is recording such a heavy album with such amazing vocals. Amazing work 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thanks so much for this video. Cattle are on my favourite bands and inspire me so much musically. Defs will try some of the tips (google doc, colour coding and recording by vocal style) As much as I would love to pace around holding the microphone to record I honestly think my producer would sell me black market style for organ parts if I did that lol might have to show him this video now 😆
Just remember to only do this kinda stuff if it works for you. Some don't need to separate styles and that can make things a lot easier. Do what's best for the project in the end!
I don't know if you could revisit Cobalt's Gin or the Primitive Man stuff, where things aren't as polished and have such a defining character, there are lots of videos around on sounding really HD and modern but like maybe get in depth into retaining character and uglier sounds?...that doesn't seem to pop up as much
I'm into this idea for sure. It would be tough to go back to those older albums because honestly the details have become a bit fuzzy at this point, but when I work with these bands in the future I'm definitely planning on creating some content for those sessions.
Another great video Dave, your knowledge & expertise not only with gear but with sound in general continues to blow me away. I’m honestly shocked you don’t have Grammy’s out the ass on every shelf of your studio! Cheers man
What’s up with a dvd for all this and some live atlas footage for this death at last tour gonna wrap up sometime in AZ? Gonna see this February 11 2022 in AG baby🤘 I want my record signed yo🤘🤘
Dave otero cant believe we just found your page. I have been cranking death atlas every day driving home from work really like what your did with the project. My bands is looking to record in the future a 3rd album - do you have quotes for your work ?
I really want him to have a coaster for that snifter? What’s in there? Ghost in the Machine? Anyways, new album is fucking awesome. I was talking about it at work and people are checking them out. I fucking love it.
I’m fairly new to cubase. I switched over from logic because I primarily do film music now and love the midi editing features in cubase. However I’m still doing my metal stuff in logic and pro tools because I’m not as comfortable yet working w audio in cubase. It would be awesome if at some point you could give some quick tips and things you use when recording and editing audio! Cheers brother!
Video should be called "how the fuck record vocals the first time youre in the studio!" Mooooooost of us know this shit ffs. Im going back to watching COPS
Would love to have seen some raw vocal performances in the video and maybe a mic comparison just with finished takes. Love the videos! Huge shout out from Australia. A mix tutorial would be sick of even just how to tame such a variety of vocals like travis's from the channel and master bus. But honestly I would watch any mix or production tutorial you did. Finally a fucking awesome metal producer and mixer making videos!
Seems like you’re not only an expert in production and engineering, but you’ve got amazing skill in making your clients feel comfortable during the entire recording process. Your tricks help the artists give the best performance, and should be adopted far and wide by producers everywhere. Call the patent office? ;)

Or have you been using Slate's ML-1 and the VMS regularly? Just curious since I know the SM7B is a bit of a go-to mic in these genres yet the VMS is an intriguing choice (not to mention whatever other mics I am sure you have access to).
