We definitely need a NailTheMix session for this new Cattle album. Tones are so good but at the same time need your own science to turn them into the Cattle Decapitation signature sound. Really excited by the new channel btw!
I love that Belisario is actually contributing to this record, not just being a touring guitarist, as he’s been thus far. Talented dude! Also, I can’t express how excited I am that the new album has been announced, and has a release date. Always loved Cattle, and have appreciated the progression in their songwriting, and the contributions of all the different members as they join Travis and Josh along the way. They just keep getting better!!!
Bel is an awesome dude and a KILLER player. It was awesome having 2 guitarists on this one. It opens up a lot more options for guitar layering and gives them the ability to replicate it live.
I met Josh before a show in Atlanta earlier this year, we talked about guitars and old venues for about 20 minutes before he had to go back inside, told him i am a guitarist as well so that was awesome, and i met the rest of Cattle after at their bus right after their set. Josh gave me a Dava pick that had been used many times by him considering the ware on it, and Belisario gave me a black pick with their logo on it, and got to hang with the whole band for about 45 minutes. I was super nervous meeting Travis tho... Definitely a monumental night for me as a fan and fellow musician!
These videos are so thorough & awesome. It's crazy how just two producers/studios (Otero & Ballou) are responsible for literally like 90% of my favorite albums of the last 10-15 years
@Zulpher Hell yeah, man! Driving 4 hours with my girl then driving 2 more hours to see Family in Tucson afterwards. The drive is gonna suck but the concert will be worth it!
This is one of the most informative videos I've ever watched for recording guitar and products used in recording. The two guitar tones did in fact blend perfectly.
When I first saw Josh's guitar I was like "damn, what was that man thinking?". But little by little it has grown on me and now I think it is just beautiful, It really compliment's the style of music they play, and when he is shredding that thing on stage it fits right in. Thanks Lord Dave
There's so much detail into every choice you guys make and i never thought some things would make much of a difference but knowing the last few albums and hearing the teaser, it really shows every small choice matters and it all culminates to this original sound. This video was something i didn't know i needed. can't wait to see more content.
I wish there were more videos like this. There are thousands of guitar tones which have no record on what methods were used to achieve them. Thanks for this breakdown!
Damn, Dave! Your studio reports are just some of the best I've ever come across. Great, in-depth explanations, attention to detail, quality footage. Love these!
@@DaveOteroTube and it shows! I listen to everything, the explanations, tech specs, slow-mo (haha) and then the tones demo approaches... I'm like, yessss, the cherry on top, mmm) Great content, straight to the point! METAL! \m/
GEAR NERD CHUBBIE INBOUND. So beyond stoked to see guys doing these type of videos again. One of the coolest things I loved about spending the extra money on Deluxe CD's was getting a bonus DVD of this material to dive into. Mad love Dave!
Separately, the 6505 and the HIWATT sounds kinda ok. . but hoooly cow, together the tone is insane! Well done for identifying and merging these two. I wonder, how diff' / similar was the amp's EQ setup from one another?
*I put Cattle Decap up for the night the first time they played in New Orleans at the House of Blues. We ate chocolate chip cookies. Make sure you tell them about this comment.*
They opened for GWAR that night. I was writing a fanzine back then. I was late and missed my interview with them. Summer of 2002? 2003 seems too late. I gauge everything from way back then off of 911, so, I did this and this and yadda yadda after 911. Lol..
You should do more covering even not so known peeps you've recorded. I love nerding out on how unique and odd ways things get tracked. Didn't expect the Super-hit 50. Sweet video.
I'm pretty sure it's a macassar ebony fretboard, which is confusing because there is also such a thing as Madagascar ebony. It never gets any easier...

@@DaveOteroTube If your taking suggestions for more videos i'd love to hear some in depth tips for setting guitar EQ on the amp. i mostly mix as a hobby and i find that metal guitars are a big challenge. The tones on the CD videos are so defined and still retain all of the brutal characteristics you want with a album like this. Anyways, can't wait for this release. !!!
Thanks for watching! The majority of the album is double track, but there are a few sections where we quad-tracked for the right sound. I agree though, I generally prefer double tracking.
After watching this it makes me once again happy in my decision when i got my 6505+ years ago, its a badass amp. And that copper top guitar is some crazy shit.
@@DaveOteroTube Don't know if you'v tried one but I have a old B52 at-100 head that sounds very nice and meaty and i would still use if it didn't break every other year. After sending it in 3 times to get fixed i broke down and bought my 6505+.
Idk why but I’ve never played the same brand of picks for very long. I can’t help but try different ones. Always come back to Dava picks though. Durable and phenomenal attack.
I never expected that you would be picky about the guitar pick (hehe). I always use the Dunlop 1mm extra grip, but I’ll check out the ones you mentioned in the video
Love the video! In the future, you may want to consider linking the other gear videos in the description, it was a little annoying going back through to find the part where the notification for the bass video popped up.
So about the metal picks. A lot of that might be Josh's attack. A lot of guitarists will "cheat" if you will and angle their picks at 45 degrees or more to get more of a slicing attack across the string. They find it easier to pick this way but the consequence is that because the lower strings are ridged it can produce a super scratchey sound that gets worse the more it's angled. This sound only gets worse with certain materials like metal. If you watch the footage to have accompanying that section of Josh picking he's picking with a pretty flat attack so that might have something to do with why it didn't sound scratchy.
A lot of modern guitar tones sound too dry and undergained to me, but the 6505 definitely has that nice saturation and bite which helps make things sound alive. I always take a notch out at around 3.7KHz though, because no matter what amp I use, that always seems to be a problem area. I like a dark guitar tone, so sacrificing a bit of bite is fine.
Subbed less than a couple minutes into the video. I've seen your name on quite a few albums and had a feeling this vid would be interesting. Tbh, i never really paid much mind to this band other than when an occasional vid would pop up in recommended/related. The few songs i heard didn't resonate much with me but seeing the nuances of their sound explained in such a detailed, consummate manner really has me excited to give their music a better listen. I'm looking forward to this release and exploring their past albums. Thanks for your work and sharing the process through this channel.🤘
