  • XPG and ADATA are making a handheld gaming PC with a tilting screen, Foveated Rendering and swappable ram using a CAMM2 Module! Known as the XPG Nia can this new handheld compete with the steam Deck and the ASUS ROG Ally X? Plus we also saw a new unbranded handheld known as the SIX United 5 that looks like a mix of the MSI CLaw and ROG Ally.

    Foveated rendering works in VR because the screens take up your entire field of view, including your periphery. Your peripheral vision isn't nearly as sharp as your center, so the things *in* your periphery can be lower fidelity, and you won't really notice it all that much. It's not going to work quite the same on smaller screens, where the entire screen (or most of it) is in your center vision. You're going to notice the blurring, and it's going to be distracting. Even most large projector screens (100"+), viewed from a "normal" distance, aren't really large enough to make this work properly. It's cool that they're exploring this concept on a smaller device, but I don't think it's going to work out the way they intend.

    • @AlejandroCaicedoPUJ
      @AlejandroCaicedoPUJ 3 месяца назад +5

      As far as I know, focused vision is still a small part of a screen, even a small one, so maybe it can work as long as it's well tuned and the onfucused area is not tthta large and not that low res. Even in this video that is an exagetared example if I focus my vision on the center of the focused area it is not that bad, and I'm on a phone

    • @Sup_D
      @Sup_D 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Roweyy CAMM is a single slot type RAM which is positioned horizontally on the Motherboard.
      While it's good for small form factor like Laptops or Mini PC or Compact PC, on normal form factor it takes a lot of board space, increase the size of motherboards further (we already have issues of big GPU's, adding another size issue is really not ideal).
      There is also the fact that, since it is dual channel type in a single module (in half size & full size form), while it's overall cost would be lower than say two sticks of DIMM RAM. But in the case of DIMM, if one RAM stick fails you can replace it with another, saving the cost of one working stick. But in CAMM, if the RAM fails, even if it's just a single part of it, you have to discard it whole and buy new.

I use a rog Ally and I've played on Steamdeck and I always have to leave the screen Vertically so I can see the colors and definition of the game well, but it tires my wrists. I like playing with a controller resting on my legs or more horizontally, but with a handleheld you lose quality Of image. The display being able to change the angle would help A LOT! The first one would be a Frankenstein of a handheld. It would have 8.8-inch 144hz 2560x1600p screen just like the Legion Go but it would also have VRR just like the ROG Ally. I would also opt for an OLED that can go up to 1000 nits just like the Steam Deck OLED. It would have a Steam Deck like controller with a trackpad on each side. The controllers can also detach from the screen just like on the Legion Go. It would also have Hall-effect joystick, so it will never have stick drift. It would use the Z1 Extreme or some other high end AMD chipset with RDNA 3 integrated graphics. It would have 32gb of DDR5 ram clocked at 7500mhz. It would use a full-sized M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD like on ROG Ally X, so I can get an 8tb stick or a reasonably priced 4TB stick. It would have an 80+ Wh battery. The ROG Ally X has an 80Wh battery but since my dream handheld would be even bigger than that, I don't see why we couldn't incorporate an even bigger battery. We might even be able use a battery as big as that max 99.99Wh allowed on airplanes. It would run Windows 11 but with a special handheld optimized skin. Maybe an Xbox-like interface to access all of your games when you turn on the device but has a separate mode that takes you into the default windows 11 OS. I know Steam Deck and Linux won't agree with this, but it is my dream handheld and Windows is just more versatile and allows multiple game launchers. It would support all the latest connectivity options such as Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and 5G. It would have dual front-firing speakers. In terms of IO, I would want 3 USB-C ports. 2 on the top and 1 on the bottom. It would also have a 3.5mm combo audio jack and a MicroSD card slot. It would have an Oculink or a thunderbolt 5 port to connect an external GPU. A thunderbolt 5 port has similar bandwidth to Oculink and can be one of those USB-C ports located on the top. Some additional features I want would be a built-in kickstand, gyro, a webcam with Windows Hello, auto-brightness, microphone, magnetic keyboard, and active stylus support. Some of these features such as webcam, stylus, 5G, and magnetic keyboard aren't commonly found in handheld, but it is commonly found in laptops and tablets. Adding these features shouldn't be too hard for a handheld and will make it more versatile.

    The new ROG Ally X is probably the best option apart from Steam Deck.

    Meteor-lake is already in the MSI claw and laptops, what you are probably thinking is the Lunar-lake that the upcoming MSI claw 8 AI will use. Pass on tilting, sliding or bendy screens they are largely prone to breakage than regular still displays. Its great that they are promising upgradeable ram but the other specs are meh should avoid.

    I would like the latest RDNA 3.5 set up in a new handheld with at least 16cu's. Throw in a nice AMOLED display at 120 hz and VRR and I am happy. 1tb hard drive minimum, it shouldn't be premium anymore.

    @ETA PRIME, what are your thoughts on usb 4 and thunderbolt on handhelds? I am under the belief that they are a must have now. Since the ally x, legion go and onexplayer stuff, I think we need the option of having a non proprietary port for things like egpus. Oculink as a must have would be nice but I doubt they would be a default. It would be nice though.

    these should be more in line with the price of a ps5/xbox. 900 euros for an ally x is way too much money, i paid 1000 euros for my laptop with a 4060 in it. 500 to 600 is more the price i would love to see for these things. i would get the deck because that rocks but i`d like to have access to gamepass aswell on a device like this

    Foveated focusing is a neat idea but it doesn't seem to work. Even when I focus where ETA Prime says to focus, I can easily see the blurring at all the other parts of the screen. It really looks janky and bad, so while the idea is good the implementation is not.

  • @austintse5719
    @austintse5719 3 месяца назад

    Foveated rendering motion blur on top of motion blur in the game and it will be a blurry mess. It makes you feel like you got bad eye sight. Its a really bad idea.
    This only works in VR games but on a small screen, I don't see the point. The flip screen is an interesting idea but its a failure point. I like the kick stand though but they need to make it like switch oled and not be loose.
    The only interest I have for future handhelds is battery life and Rog Ally X with 80 Wh battery is where I'll put my money.

    What is it missing? Commodity products competing on meeting lower price/perf sweetspots. rather than trying to make the most over the top luxury device that will be outdated in 6 months anyhow. It's a fast moving market, pump out some cheap units that get the job done, Orange Pi neo style, heck, beat um if ya can, 6800u old stock? can ya get it cheap enough to hit $400? DO IT!
