    I think before jumping to FEA , one should study PDEs at a very good level (distribution theory, function spaces and so on) as well as numerical analysis. Having that knowledge as well as the knowledge from solid mechanics etc one can move to FEA. Seeing people going straight to FEA is just WRONG imo.
