  • What might stop you from completing an ultra marathon? And what tactics have been successful? Here are my previous fails - share yours too! This year I'm training for the Manx Mountain marathon, UTS 50k and (fingers crossed!) the Montane Lakeland 100. This is my latest training film where I try to think of all the things that might stop me from completing the biggie (ML100) based on my previous ultra experience and then think of ways to combat them. It's a great exercise in planning, because ultra running is about so much more than just the running part!
Hope this helps you on your trail or ultra running journey whatever the distance (it's not all about the long stuff for sure!) and I'm very interested to hear your thoughts in the RUclips comments below. Let's kick some ideas around for beating the things that might make us DNF or succeed!

Never ever set off into the wilds with Concrete or bricks as weight......The SAS in the 70s had to stop the practice after soldiers were found dead of exposure with a heavy rucksack of bricks and nothing useful. Pick useful weight like a Tent / Waterproofs / Spare clothes / Sleeeping bag /Food etc.

This is exactly what I was saying in the film, looking forward to taking my tent with me on the next trip!

Will happily follow along on your training adventures! My favourite kind of youtube running series is following along with someones training toward a specific goal. Best of luck!

Hello Claire! My "intentional" DNFs were weather-related, and the other two times I was forced to DNF'd because I missed a time cut-off. The first time was because of heavy fog at night. In heavy fog the light bounces back into your eyes at night, so I was walking along holding my headtorch by my knees just to see the trail. I decided to stop at the very next (mile 42) aid station. The second time it was very cold and windy and my eyes froze. Everything went blurry and I couldn't see until I warmed up (in a van). Fortunately I was fine, but it would have been too late to continue. The other 2 times (the cut-offs) - well, I'm a slow runner and mainly walker nowadays so I no longer pick races that have short time-cutoffs.

Weather has forced me to shut down long training runs, especially cold, rain, and cold/rain.

Very interesting Arleen, I'm so glad you were ok after the blurry eye incident too, that sounds terrifying!

The first time I met you was right after you gave this presentation at the Running Show. Vassos Alexander was on next I think and you followed him and the group of parkrun tourists I had managed somehow to assemble (WiFi at the NEC still sucks and the hall is a giant Faraday cage so good luck getting mobile data! Taking two way radios next time...)

Every one of us must decide for ourselves what fulfillment means. I avoid risky, miserable, and potentially gruesome races beyond my capabilities because I want to enjoy the whole experience. I have completed six 50Ks and one 50-mile without a DNF. That is just me - I want difficult, but I want low risk and the successful journey too.

Defo John well said for sure, this is me now, I don't want to be miserable!!!

2 DNFs : 5k beginners group "graduation" and the calf went twang. RTTS 50k, inner thighs chafed to bits

I've only done five ultras but DNFd my first when I tripped up after 73km and dislocated my shoulder and broke my arm. I assumed I was the type of person who could just tape it up and run to the end, but it turned out I'm not 😁

Oh yikes, that sounds incredibly painful and a very good reason to DNF! Makes for a good story also! :)

I don't do the milages you do, but I've not lost toenails since switching to injinji toe socks, not really had a bad blister either. I've DNF'd before from twisted ankles, but I haven't had that since moving to more minimalist style shoes (inov8 g270 and x-talon 255 at the mo). I have much more awarenes, better reactions and stronger feet & ankles, I sometimes notice ive landed just on the edge of something but nothing bad happens.
Also - did you start with a smaller backpack load and build up over a few runs? if you didn't I suspect you've already thought about that!

Ooh nice suggestion Chris I have a pair of injinjis so I might wear them in the Peaks this week with my Altras, that should be a good pairing. I've been wearing the backpack for doing my strength exercises, and I've sort of built up as I'm used to carrying my toddler around so as he has got heavier my load has got heavier. This backpack is the same as carrying him, so yes, I built up over a year! Great question, glad you're enjoying the channel! Claire
