Steve Allan : I've got a aa tx 200 hc. This was bought brand new back in 98/9 time and has hardly been used. In the years since purchase I've lost the effective use of my right index and middle finger and now find I cannot load it (!). Love the gun but I'm now a dead loss to it. What may be more suitable per loading etc, please ?
I have an S410 in .177. calibre. With a beautiful walnut stock and fitted with a Simmons Whitetail Classic Scope, it is by far the best air rifle I have ever owned.
Steve forgot to say I bought a Lane regulator and my goodness does it work! I plotted the power curve and it is pronounced, with the reg in it flattens it out dramatically. If you could get someone who wants to put on in they are so easy, with a little fore thought and measure twice drill once you can improve the already brilliant air weapon. I hunt and it's a fantastic tool. Your right about the cocking, and yes you can double feed it, you have to be rough and yank the bolt back, but that's the only fault I could find. If it does does feed the pellet in but doesn't cock you have to take out the magazine and fire the gun when it's cocked before putting the mag back. Once you get to know your gun this happens very infrequently.
Most rifles benefit from an after market regulator and of course you get a better power curve. The bolt on the 410 is a bit hard, but you do get used to it.
Have a 20 year old 'A' .22 model with upside down bolt . Never had a problem . Coupled with a Simmons 1.5-5x20 Whitetail Classic Rifle Scope(made in the Philippines not the later Chinese rubbish) What a great team they make. Loved the video
That's what's great about your reviews Steve, you dig deep and you are not scared to show the lesser points! especially here where you show the stiff bolt pull, that alone would be enough to make my mind up! and I shoot an fac 97 here in New Zealand, which takes a bit of muscle to cock it.... bolts on the other hand - should be smooth and effortless... just my two cents worth, great review! you are now my go to reviewer for all things air rifle related, because you show the truth, the reality, not sales puff or sponsored backslapping!

I found the bolt a bit awkward to operate at first too but after using the rifle for a little while I realised the easiest way is to make sure when pulling back you apply the force directly inline with the bolt. I push the bolt handle up then hook my finger around the base of the bolt handle and put my thumb on the other side so I'm pinching the rear of the bolt and pull it directly backwards. Bit difficult to explain but very easy to do.
@@airgunology Hello Steve, I personally don't find the bolt action difficult to operate using the technique I've described. The side-lever actions seem more ergonomic but are slightly more complicated. Side-lever actions have gained popularity, the latest high end PCP airguns are side-lever (I wouldn't say no to an FX Crown!) but I also wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying a bolt action like the S400/410. When you figure out how to pull the bolt directly backwards they are easy to operate regardless of the hammer spring weight. All the best
I purchased my S410 Classic new in 1998 and bolt handle was as shown here, on your video. I simply removed the allen bolt at the rear of the assembly and turned the handle round so it curved the other way.
Key to using a s410 bolt action is to use your first finger of hand on the handle and keep your thumb on the rear of the bolt receiver and it feed easy and perfectly
Hi Steve, im a bit late to the party 🤣🤣 but I've seen quite a lot of your videos and they're always a good watch and fun and informative, so thanks for that... anyway im getting an Air Arms S410 delivered today 24/11/2023... its second hand and the exact same one you've got in your video.. the rifle has been serviced and is in great condition.. so im looking forward to shooting it... its my first PCP 😂😂 I Have went over the dark side.. 😃😃 anyway I wish you all the best for your future video adventures. 👌🤘👍
I have an Air Arms S410 with the swivels and different filler valve, not sure what you call it but I see it as a 'T' connection, therefore no scratching, very very accurate and can hold its own with any other air rifle in the same catergory. I have had groups the size of a ten pence piece at 45 yards no problem depending on the wind conditions. Yes the bolt is finnicky and could double load a pellet, but you know about thes things and comensate for them. Has anyone got the 'PERFECT' AIR RIFLE WITH NO FAULTS? I dont think so, but for my money the S410 is as good as any other on the market so why spend more money on something that only does the same. But you guys with plenty of money like to brag "Mine cost in excess of £1100 " Does it do any more than my sub £1000 S420? Dream on baby lol
Very nice review, things I agree with. The bolt is stiff( I have the s410 classic in .22) and there is the risk of double load. There is also the risk of the pellet dropping out of the magazine but the loading and magazine is simplicity itself and is far far better than some others. The safety catch behind the trigger is, well to put it bluntly a pain in the arse, I removed mine and haven't missed it, although the three people I have shot accidentally may disagree (I'm joking, it was only two ). The shot count is poor compared to what you can get nowadays but that may cost you over a thousand pound more. In the end for me it's all about accuracy and these guns are bob on, shooting off sticks I can get a full magazine inside a twenty pence at fifty yards, which for me is excellent , I would also add it's a proper hunting rifle by that I mean it can take a little bit of rough and tumble , when I look at some of the new rifles out, I would be scared to take them ratching through woods etc incase I marked them up. Oh one other thing, I have never needed high mounts to clear the magazine but maybe you did in the older versions, so I wouldn't or couldn't say that's wrong. Love your videos, catching up and binge watching them all.
Thanks buddy, you have confirmed many of the facts I found with the rifle. It is great for what it is and the price, but has faults. Thanks for binge watching and your comments will certainly help others thinking of this rifle.
i bought a s 400 in 1997 the bolt was tiny to get to the point a company in woking in surrey adapted the rifle to take a magazine this was in the days before air arms made the s410
Also you dont need to buy another bolt on the s410 because its upside down, undo the screw at the end of the bolt and spin it round so its the right way round.
Great video, I just picked up a S410 Xtra fac in .22 cal, and it too doesn't have a safety! Every gun shop expert I spoke with couldn't tell me if this was done from the factory. Currently waiting on a couple of magazines and a air pump so I can shoot it.
forgot to say for all you left handers out there like me consider the S510 coz theres a massive advantage. The super smooth side lever bolt is on the right of the gun meaning u can easily index the next shot with your free right hand coz its so light to pull back. while your left hand is still on the trigger and eye down the sight meaning u can shoot your 10 shot clip very fast without ever taking your eyes of your target very big advantage for hunters or anyone who just likes to look cool shooting 10 shots super fast
Thanks for letting me know. Some of the retailers I've seen charge an extra 90 pounds for a left handed version of the S410. So I'm considering the S510 after seeing your comment. Do you know if there are any other differences between the S410 and S510? I reckon the reason his cocking handle is upside down is because it's a left handed handle on a right handed rifle.
Nice review. Had my C / Mk3 for 12 years-ish c/o good old Veals in Bristol (sad to see they didn't make it through Lockdown 1) and it has never let me down. If it's filled to 190 or 180 the shots will be low and all over the place till you hit the sweet spot. Fill to 160 and use to about 110.chrono it to get exact spot.
Hi Steve making my way through your videos they are amazing... the main problem I have with my s400 (practically same rifle) is that when I'm out hunting I catch my bolt ALOT and when I try to take a shot the bolt then blows open but I love the gun it's probably my error for not checking before taking the shot... but now I tend to place my thumb on the bolt to eliminate this... it's my first air rifle and love the gun and the sport
Daniel Cole mmm that should not happen. Make sure u are firm with the bt and it is engaged down properly. Loads of these rifles have small fiddly bolts even the BAD ultra I am testing. Thanks for the kind remarks on my channel. Encourages me to produce more
When I did my introduction into air rifles, I didn’t get on with the PCPs i tested. I love the idea of a magazine, But there was no ‘feel’ to it, and as Steve said, ongoing costs are higher than a springer. I ended up buying an Air Arms TX200 Mark 3 with a custom stock and internals and I love it. Feels like there is more skill to it, imo anyway.
To pull the bolt back properly put your thumb on the oposite side of the bolt handle before you pull back. the old models also have a 2 sear trigger where the new ones have a 3 sear trigger so easier to set it very light. The S400 classic is the best model IMO and its the cheapest.
Excellent review lots of very useful information I own a rm8 which is a good rifle but I think the 410 is much better manufactured gun I will be keeping my eye out for one. Thanks for the info stay safe and keep well. Big fan Vince from Wigan
Great review, thanks. You say that the power curve drops off after about 70 shots, do you know what the pressure would be at that point? Keeping an eye on the gague is easier than counting shots for those of us who don’t shoot that much... Cheers.
Good video Steve.. you might wanna check out (Cometa Orion SPR).... i bought 2 monthes ago and it has common features with the S410. Cant wait for the next episode.. greetings from Holland
I have this model of gun. The bolt action on mine is smooth and quite easy to cock. The bolt lever is the correct way round for a right hander. It is a great gun. I've had no problems at all with it. Great videos by the way.
I liked all your comments which I thought were spot on both negative and positive. I have just bought a second hand AirArms carbine S410 C (with safety catch) last week. Perhaps you can help me with one issue. I took it out today and found that the first shots were all over the place, but I was using a mixture of pellets the Diablo and a David Nickerson Magnum point in my magazine. I cannot think of why this should affect the accuracy, but I stopped mixing and sighted it in again then tried one mag with Diablo and one with Magnum. Problem resolved. Is it a practical thing todo before a new shoot to fire of a couple of pellets to "warm the barrel"? Would appreciate your advise on this.
All pellets are made different and even in the same tin. That's why serious people even sort their tins into groups of pellets that match. So never mix pellets when shooting, especially target shooting as you will get all sorts of results from pellets weighing different, different shapes and flight paths. You also right on lining your barrel, always fire 10 or 15 shots when changing pellets. Looks like you learnt this lesson. Good luck and thanxs
Hi Steve , another great review, one of my first pcp,s was the s410 .177 a great gun your reviews are honest and done in a common sense manner, keep them up Steve atb brian
I've got an S410 and they're a superb rifle, easy to work on and accurate. The only fault with the magazine is when full and in your pocket the last pellet will fall out, if you want a 9 shot leave the last empty (like the old six shooters in cowboy days) other wise turn the magazine a a fraction on the last pelt so it stays in, then before inserting it turn it so the pellet will cycle.
That’s why I don’t like the Gamo Phox, similar stiff bolt, and easy to double load , horrible, enough to make me look for a different gun , cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Good review, I've got a 410 and a 510, I prefer the bolt on the 410, both .177 both like JSB heavies. A great rifle. I swapped the safety/trigger for a Rowan setback.
Typical Air Arms cock up I ordered a 177 and received a . 22 even though it was actually stamped 177 somebody screwed up I sent it back to the Airgun store and in fairness They let me have a weirauch kt97 in .22 complete with scope and nice strap
great vid steve , yes the s410 is ( and always will be ) a good / accurate / excellent value rifle . " boring "? " uninspiring "? well !! not sure about that , MOST PCP' s will group excellently @ 25yrds / 25mtrs , its when you stretch the limits too 40mtrs > 50mtrs + things become a little " spread out " in the grouping stakes , a great gun for sure , ( I know a few folk who have them ) but I think id go for my R10 ( .177 ) every time , same price bracket new I think .. anyway I kinda fancy either a Daystate MK4 , or an AA S510 ultimate sporter , the only thing that puts me off the AA is the lack of single shot capability .. recon ill see what crops up at the shooting show at Stoneleigh next month ... sorry for rambling on ... 10/10 for yer vid
also .. the AA pellets ( .22 ) do not fit in my FX Typhoon , so I use the super light ( for a .22 ) pellet the strangely named JSB " Jumbo" RS . weighing in at a meagre 13.43 grain ... wished the AA fields would at least fit .. as my son uses them with great effect in his .22 R10 ..
Cheers Mark. I Can't quite put my finger on it being uninspiring. It is good, but seems to lack a bit of character that say my Kalibrgun or BSA have. It is an awesome rifle for sure.
I relied heavily on your vid to buy an updated one of these and it came yesterday (mid July 2018). I went for the longer rifle not the carbine as my first PCP rifle after a lifetime of spring air guns. I set the sights up with recommended Exact Jumbo pellets and found these harder to reycle in the magazine, because as you say the bolt is so stiff. After about 100 shots I started using a tin of Crosman Domed Ultra Magnums and it was far easier to recycle and like a different gun to shoot, so it depends on the pelletsI think. I will try the domed Air Arms pellets as you recommend. (the other things you mention they have now corrected) so many thanks for your vid.
Brad, Awesome and I am so glad my review helped you choose your rifle. Yes this is pellet fussy and you may need to swap and change to find one that cycles well and shoots well too.
And this is why I like my Rapids so much. The S410 is every bit as good and in some circumstances better than my Rapids, but the Rapids 'feel' special. I guess in the music world it is called the X Factor. The best singer is not the best entertainer.
my 410 was often having problems with recycling but if I keep one finger on the magazine as I pull the bolt and move it forward the pellet will be in the breech ok.Am I the only one having this problem.
The mag was such a tight fit when I got it my local gunshop thought the barrell had been nudged into the breech.so he moved the barrell so that metal ring wasn't as pressed as tight to the mag.al let you know happens m8
When you did the pellet test, where they using the same specks as the one that was made for the air rifle? ..... I think it was 5.5 and 16 ? for the good ones?
@@airgunology I recently bought a second hand s400 a great rifle but i did not like the aluminium looking bolt . So i bought an after market black one and it looks so much better in my eyes.www.rowanengineering.com/products1.htm
its a great gun but the bolt is terrible because it was designed for the s400 which works well but not on the s410 as it was not designed to rotate the magazine as well
Hi there, i bought a second hand s410 a few months ago (my first pcp) i think mine is the (A) model because of the lack of safety catch and mine also had the upside down bolt. I've since replaced it with a brass one. Also i had to tune the power down with the small grub screw because it was shooting at 23ft lb on my chronograph the (a) models we're pre anti tamper and easy to adjust. Mine also likes the AA field pellets, I love this rifle ;-)
That pull is not good , I wouldn’t be happy with a gun , like that Steve , that pull is much to hard , wouldn’t buy one of them regardless cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
Hi Steve it’s typical of us British isn’t it? If there is a fault it’s crap, but if it’s all perfect it’s too good with no character 😂😂😂 maybe you should look at the stiff bolt action as a quirk and it may seem better ....err worse errr more appealing then 😂👍👍👍
You mention it not being a bullpup, but there is a nice conversion kit from Blackpool Air Rifles (video: ruclips.net/video/pwMDK2rZpwQ/видео.html ). I'd love to put one on my S410 but there are difficulties with bullpup stocks coming into Canada.
right.. the bolt action is easy. what you do is throw the gun away from you & pull the bolt back at the same time, then you have the motion of the gun & you pulling back at the same time, think how j wain spun his rifle & cocked it. its all in the wrist action. yee haar

Encourages me to produce more
That could be dangerous, take it to a gunsmith and get it checked
Does anyone prefer spring rifles to pcp?
Many people do as they find PCP just too easy. Many also like the rawness of a springer, back to old school.
Steve Allan thanks for answering is there any advantages to Springer's
Cost, ease of use, not having to have air tanks or pumps to fill them.Basically have a rifle and pellets and you are good to go with a springer.
Steve Allan that's what I was thinking very reliable? Easy to fix and son on?
When I did my introduction into air rifles, I didn’t get on with the PCPs i tested. I love the idea of a magazine, But there was no ‘feel’ to it, and as Steve said, ongoing costs are higher than a springer. I ended up buying an Air Arms TX200 Mark 3 with a custom stock and internals and I love it. Feels like there is more skill to it, imo anyway.
What Calibre should I get for rabbits
To pull the bolt back properly put your thumb on the oposite side of the bolt handle before you pull back. the old models also have a 2 sear trigger where the new ones have a 3 sear trigger so easier to set it very light. The S400 classic is the best model IMO and its the cheapest.
Thanks for the tips.
Excellent review lots of very useful information I own a rm8 which is a good rifle but I think the 410 is much better manufactured gun I will be keeping my eye out for one. Thanks for the info stay safe and keep well. Big fan Vince from Wigan
Hi Steve
Good job including the nit picking
Take care, stay safe and keep it lit.👍 my friend
My TDR is the same with the bolt
Not an air rifle guy but is the compressed air simply compressed air or a special mix?
Standard air compressed to 3000 - 4000 PSI in the tube under the rifle barrel.
Great review, thanks. You say that the power curve drops off after about 70 shots, do you know what the pressure would be at that point? Keeping an eye on the gague is easier than counting shots for those of us who don’t shoot that much... Cheers.
Under 100 bar and I would refill. 70 shots is your maximum, I would refill after 50.
I've just been offered a air arms gas rifle for £150 but don't know what model it is until later. Is that a good price for any of them second hand?
Good video Steve.. you might wanna check out (Cometa Orion SPR).... i bought 2 monthes ago and it has common features with the S410.
Cant wait for the next episode..
greetings from Holland
Make a nice Father's Day present lol
lol :) I am a father too, to wanna buy it me :)
would an A version really be good for a newby with no safety catch ?
Depends on the newbie. Personally in my opinion, all rifles should have a good safety catch
Need to review a newer s410 mate there much sweeter than earlier models
I have this model of gun. The bolt action on mine is smooth and quite easy to cock. The bolt lever is the correct way round for a right hander. It is a great gun. I've had no problems at all with it.
Great videos by the way.
Thanks buddy, agree on the rifle, really nice, but personally I hate the bolt.
Salut . ce viteza are peletu la iesire din teava . in m\s. va multumesc anticipat
Hi Steve , another great review, one of my first pcp,s was the s410 .177 a great gun
your reviews are honest and done in a common sense manner, keep them up Steve
atb brian
hoppobun7 thanks buddy
Excellent video Steve, what's great is seeing you grow in presenting. Compare this video to your first, my goodness keep at it !
Southampton....
Thank you :)
Nice little review that.
Thank you.
Great video, I have the S410F but I don’t know what the the “F” stands for! 😅
Fluted,as in the fluted slots on the muzzle break, and the barrel at the breach end,and the filler protective cap.
Yes I noticed this too. But other than that, they are great rifles.
That’s why I don’t like the Gamo Phox, similar stiff bolt, and easy to double load , horrible, enough to make me look for a different gun , cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Very nice review indeed!
Good review, I've got a 410 and a 510, I prefer the bolt on the 410, both .177 both like JSB heavies. A great rifle. I swapped the safety/trigger for a Rowan setback.
How many shots do you get from the carbine version
Is it not in the video, i can't remember was sometime ago It is not high
Typical Air Arms cock up I ordered a 177 and received a . 22 even though it was actually stamped 177 somebody screwed up I sent it back to the Airgun store and in fairness They let me have a weirauch kt97 in .22 complete with scope and nice strap
Shite happens at time, as long as your RFD sorted you out and you are happy.
great vid steve , yes the s410 is ( and always will be ) a good / accurate / excellent value rifle .
Yes this is pellet fussy and you may need to swap and change to find one that cycles well and shoots well too.
would rather hear the rifle instead of the music
Can't please everyone.
And this is why I like my Rapids so much. The S410 is every bit as good and in some circumstances better than my Rapids, but the Rapids 'feel' special. I guess in the music world it is called the X Factor. The best singer is not the best entertainer.
:) Nicely summed up mate. See you soon and perhaps I may do a Rapid review
I get great groups with RWS.
The stock looks like a weapon from the early days of muzzle loaded guns, where after firing it was reversed and used as a club.
hahahahaha
Nice one I like it
Thanks for watching
Hi steve ,canada ,awesome video again ,practice practice, it will come ,,he he 😎🥰
Thanks for watching.
my 410 was often having problems with recycling but if I keep one finger on the magazine as I pull the bolt and move it forward the pellet will be in the breech ok.Am I the only one having this problem.
I never had this problem, but others may comment. Are you sure the mag was clipped in correctly ?
The mag was such a tight fit when I got it my local gunshop thought the barrell had been nudged into the breech.so he moved the barrell so that metal ring wasn't as pressed as tight to the mag.al let you know happens m8
When you did the pellet test, where they using the same specks as the one that was made for the air rifle? ..... I think it was 5.5 and 16 ? for the good ones?
It deliberately used random tins to prove a point for newcomers. So yes the wasps were loose in the barrel
12 years old that gun ??
Only AR out of 25 I have owned, ever shot SD was an old RWS 34.
the bolt is from a left handed person fitted on the wrong g side take bolt out turn it over put it left good to go
Why not take the screw out the bolt and just turn it the Right way its a 2 minute job the bolt levers 2 separate parts the screw holds them together
Cheap air gunning? That's a £700+ gun. Count in scope, mod and charging gear.
Prices have gone up mate but if anything the s410 is even better now
Great videos keep up the good work for all us airgunners.
Thank you, I will try,
Nice one buddy, always enjoy your videos and the honest opinions, cheers.
teno guy thanks
Hw95 a nice cheap rifle
Hatsan 55s if your a bit more of a peasant. I love mine, kicks like a mule though.
Hi have got one that is not upside down
Simple mistake pal take it off an rotate it it's been fitted back to front either by hand or been loaded onto the jig the wrong way when made
OK but I ask from you as quickly
Your bolt appears to be upside down .
Yes, as I said in the video, it happened on some rifles.
@@airgunology I recently bought a second hand s400 a great rifle but i did not like the aluminium looking bolt . So i bought an after market black one and it looks so much better in my eyes.www.rowanengineering.com/products1.htm
Very good
Thank you
its a great gun but the bolt is terrible because it was designed for the s400 which works well but not on the s410 as it was not designed to rotate the magazine as well
The only thing I didn't really like was the bolt.
😂😂😂👌🎩⛵nice review..i have 510 dx very nice rifle 🕊🕊🎩🌹👌
this airgun could buy a small car here in the philippines
Same in the UK you could.
Think i’d struggle to get a small car into my gun bag
Liam Iris I doubt it it’s not that expensive and I live in the Philippines
Hi there, i bought a second hand s410 a few months ago (my first pcp) i think mine is the (A) model because of the lack of safety catch and mine also had the upside down bolt. I've since replaced it with a brass one. Also i had to tune the power down with the small grub screw because it was shooting at 23ft lb on my chronograph the (a) models we're pre anti tamper and easy to adjust. Mine also likes the AA field pellets, I love this rifle ;-)
Nice one, it is an awesome rifle and no wonder it is so popular.
That pull is not good , I wouldn’t be happy with a gun , like that Steve , that pull is much to hard , wouldn’t buy one of them regardless cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
Good review except WHY the irritating music??
Hi Steve it’s typical of us British isn’t it? If there is a fault it’s crap, but if it’s all perfect it’s too good with no character 😂😂😂 maybe you should look at the stiff bolt action as a quirk and it may seem better ....err worse errr more appealing then 😂👍👍👍
indeed, always never happy us Brits :)
Good review :) What's with the long thumbnail?
Habit of not cutting it, comes in useful for picking my noggin :) (Joke)
You mention it not being a bullpup, but there is a nice conversion kit from Blackpool Air Rifles (video: ruclips.net/video/pwMDK2rZpwQ/видео.html ). I'd love to put one on my S410 but there are difficulties with bullpup stocks coming into Canada.
That looks great and perfect for the S410 :)
right.. the bolt action is easy. what you do is throw the gun away from you & pull the bolt back at the same time, then you have the motion of the gun & you pulling back at the same time, think how j wain spun his rifle & cocked it. its all in the wrist action. yee haar
This dudes thumb nail tho. Other than that good vid
I never wash :) /joke
get yourself a classic
Will try to find one for review. oin our FB Group facebook.com/groups/351221505224875/
