I try my best to be clear. I'm not perfect, I make mistakes, sometimes I do it wrong or different but it gets done and people learn something and get out and get dirty. If you have kids, let them learn with you. Thanks for watching!
This is the best I’ve seen so far removing pitmans. Though torque specs are missing, I’ll just do them. gentleman tight. I will be working on my Ford Ranger. It should be the same.
Thanks. And each vehicle is so different i can't list most torque specs. But in this case I don't use any. I've done so many i got by look and feel. Good luck. Hope all goes well
Great video, after watching this I feel like I can do this. I watched a couple other videos and thought with my bad back and shoulders it would be too hard but I'm feeling confident now, thanks.
That’s a compliant pitman arm there! Mine needed a 5 ton 3 arm puller, plus torch heat, to come off, outside the truck! I was replacing the steering gear to, I needed to take it off to get the core fee back, or I would’ve just tossed both. It didn’t budge with the normal puller, hammering, etc. This is a good video and if the arm comes off, good for you, but there are lots of us who have had a much tougher time than this.
trying to get mine with a 5 ton 2 arm puller right now. It't not going well yet but I'm hoping if I leave the puller on there tight along with some pen oil maybe it will hammer loose tomorrow
Sometimes it can help to give the puller a good smack with a hammer on the side to jar it. Or you can use a grinder or cut off wheel to grind down the pitman arm. Just don't hit the spines. And if you use a hammer don't go crazy on it or you could damage the steering box. I usually cut it off.
when the steering box goes back so do the pitman arm, never bother to take it off, it going for total re-build, they only use the casting, none of the shafts or guts
i never use a puller to get the pitman arm off, i cut the arm with my small air grinder 3/4 in and put the air chisel to it, falls f, and even with 4x4 never undo the steering box unless it needs replaced to
No. You do need to be careful not to separate the shaft but it does have enough slide to do this. Also bungie cord the steering wheel to the seat to keep the steering wheel from turning.
Mine has 2 pitman arms? Front end wobbleswhen it hits any minor rough patch in the road, steering is stiff. I jacked up the front end and it has side play on the wheels, probably about an inch. I was thinking both pitman arms and the tie rods? It has all new stabilizer bushings so I'm a bit confused. I'm not a mechanic but I redid the front end of a Volvo and a Toyota Highlander watching RUclips. Of course I have the 4wd suburban and it's not that simple. I'm taking a stab in the dark with my diagnosis, does that sound correct? Thanks for the vid by the way, very informative but I was hoping you did both pitman arms, I'm assuming it's the same procedure.
You have a pitman arm, an idler arm, idler, inner and outer tie rods. Most likely. The pitman are is attached to the steering gear box and ithe idler arm is bolted to the idler on the passenger side of the frame with 2 bolts.
Can you use a torque wrench on the pitman arm nut while the box is still in the truck.? I tried torqueing it off the truck but can get the the box to stay steady even in a vise it moves.
Just from my experience (and im not a mechanic) most 1500 series '99-06 are 4 spline, some 2500 3500 are 3. Again there could be exceptions im not a mechanic They remove and replace the same. Get both and take back one
If a pitman arm puller isn't working, you can use a 3" cut off wheel and careful cut the pitman arm at the spline. Do not cut the spline section. Once cut most of the way through it should split and relieve tension. You may have to hit it with a hammer and chisel in the cut to split it. But don't hit too hard or too much or you can damage the gear box.
I just did mine today 2002 1500 4x4, the HF one worked fine for me. I had to kind of beat it onto the smaller bolt to get it around the boot but I don't think that is the tools fault. Don't know why it wouldn't work for you.
Yea I did my pitman arm and I turn the wheel to the left and she pops back to the right violently lol. I think I put it on the wrong angle. Anyone know which way it should go back? Pitman arm a click to the passenger side or driver side?
I looked under it it seems like it's straight when the wheel is straight. But I'll check in the morning and have the wife turn the wheel and see if I notice anything
First video I saved after watching several -- GOOD JOB!
I'm glad it was helpful
Nice concise and clear unlike the last 5 videos I watched. Finally feel like I can tackle this job myself

Be careful, take your time, don't be afraid to ask a friend for help.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent work and video! You've really helped me.
Awesome! That's why I do this.
@@BigFrogs4x4 have you done any other videos on your Silverado?
@Superdad a couple but it's not my truck. It belongs to my son who now lives out of state.
One thing i Suggest is putting Anti-Seize on the Bolts and put the Grease Fitting in before installing the Arm
Thanks for the input!

Man that sucks. Hopefully the next one goes better. Thanks for watching.

Love it bro! That was slicker than owl💩
Also I love the Smile FM playing in the background ❤
Glad you enjoyed the video!
“I sing a hallelujah “ !!
@bigfrogs4x4 we play that at my church
Awesome to hear Christian music in the background!
Thanks! That's how I roll. God, family, everything else. Without him I wouldn't have the others.
Unfortunately in most videos I can't have it because of copy rights. I'm not sure how this one slips through the cracks. Well until now ;-)
Might be a silly question since you stated it only goes on 4 ways...but 01 1500 4x4 is a "4 groove" pitman arm?
They can be a 4 way or 3 way. If unsure which you have get both and return the one you don't need.
@@BigFrogs4x4 smart move. Thanks man
Great video!!
Thanks
Good Job! did you remove the steering shaft bolt from the steering box?
No. You do need to be careful not to separate the shaft but it does have enough slide to do this. Also bungie cord the steering wheel to the seat to keep the steering wheel from turning.

Technically it is to be torqued on. But honestly I never have because of the extra time it takes. I can say I have never had one come loose.
Great video ! How’s the ZR-2 ?
Awesome. So far no work I can film lol
Was that a 3 or 4 spline pitman arm? I am going to replace the one on my 2003 Z71.
I couldn't tell you. It was to long ago. Sorry.

freedomfurther you are correct, it was a 4 spline. Thank you
We can’t get the pitman arm to pull off on our 2000 Silverado.

How many splins did ur pitman arm had ??? 3 or 4 ???
Oh man, that was so long ago and I've done so many since then I can't say 100% certainty. But I think 4 spline
The harbor freight pitman arm puller doesn’t work. Anyone know what brand does work on these trucks?
I believe I used to use one sold at advanced auto parts. I did need to grind down the jaw opening a little.

what is the part number for this new pitman arm? 4 slot or 3 slot setup? thx!!!!!
I wish I could answer that but it was too long ago. Sorry I don't remember.
@@BigFrogs4x4
For future ref.
A 1500 is 4 slot.
A 2500 is probably a 3 slot.
Anything HD is definitely a 3 slot.
Parts stores always ask, and using the vin doesn't help. Thanks.
I think I love you bro
😂 making my wife jealous
Yea I did my pitman arm and I turn the wheel to the left and she pops back to the right violently lol. I think I put it on the wrong angle. Anyone know which way it should go back? Pitman arm a click to the passenger side or driver side?
Watch the pitman arm as you have someone turn the wheel. Does it go further to one side that the other?
I looked under it it seems like it's straight when the wheel is straight. But I'll check in the morning and have the wife turn the wheel and see if I notice anything
I just counted the turns in my wheel it was one and a half on each side lined up before it stopped. I'm just over this truck lol.
That sounds like it should be centered then.
Yea the pitman arm was stuck so I used a pickle fork. Now I'm afraid I messed the spline up and it's catching the the arm. I really hope not.
