These are even better on a tropic strap. Retro-cool at its finest. There is apparently a beads of rice bracelet for the super sea wolf case that can be purchased from Zodiac.
I just bought a modern version of this watch without dedicated GMT functionality, on a beads of rice bracelet with five parts to each link. The booklet that came with it described how adjust a clasped bracelet, but nil about a butterfly BOR. What a mare. Pin and collar with a game of guess the door as to which would shift. Having managed to do four of these, I gave up and just superglued the last one. If you do buy one make sure the dealer fits the bracelet. BYW O&W never died. It just reduced production to Germany only and was then sold to one of their retailers.
I've got the watermelon colourway and it comes with a great jubilee bracelet with butterfly clasp, so the non GMT/worldtime version might float your boat more.
Beautiful watch, and nice review, Jody. I purchased the Zodiac 53' Skin, last year. This has similar vibes to the 53' Skin, and similar case shape and size. I love my 53', It wears excellent on my 6.5 inch wrist and looks great, and with the STP1-11, it runs with beautiful accuracy (stays within +1-3 sec per day!!
I really like this watch. However, I didn't buy it for pretty much the same reasons that you pointed out. I ended up going with the Christopher Ward and happy that I did. No buyer's remorse whatsoever.
Fully agree, a mineral crystal bezel inlay is a cost saving measure which isn't justifiable at this price point. Another issue I have with this watch: aren't the minute and the second hand a touch small? Both could do with an extra mm.
Zodiac did not go out of business in the seventies. They've been in continuous production since 1882. They changed hands twice in the 1990s, and were a sort of sister brand to TAG Heurer at one time, then Fossil purchased them in 2001. Even during their worst decade, the 1990s, they were in steady production.
Quick precision, Ollech and Wajs never went out of business instead of Smiths Doxa and Zodiac. They managed to stay active even during the quartz crisis actually. They’re getting more attention lately thanks to the new owner and new management, but the brand never shut down. Thank you for your amazing content though, every video is a pleasure ! Greetings from France
I love Ollech and Wajs as well. Zürich is my hometown and they always made fantastic watches. But to be fair they were a microbrand, a two men show so to say. They did not depend on the sale of their watches as other manufacturers did because their main source of revenue was mostly their watch and jewellery shop which was doing well even in the quartz crisis. They just sold a lot of Seikos and Citizens as well as jewellery at that time and this is the reason they survived. I dont care if a watch brand was out of business as long as quality and price are OK.
Wow, really interesting background, Breguet, Blancpain, Aquastar,Minerva, these all were famous anyway, more brand equity, and somehow to me works better thanthe ressurection of an more obscure diver brand like Zodiac.
Zodiac in the UK had a sale, so with the sale and bit of haggling (extra £100 off sale price) I got the neon green gmt for £950 (1150 usd), so decent deals can be had. It definitely feels like it should be priced around £1000 tops, so definitely overpriced in my opinion, though a beautiful watch.
Yeah I completely agree with the bracelet. Apart from what you say here, if you have a smaller wrist it’s really hard to size to a small wrist. Not many links can remove. Shame such little nice watch can’t fit to a small wrist with the stock bracelet.
I'm a bit of a Zodiac fanboy or rather, fan-man at this point 😁They really stay true to their past designs with the re-issues. This one is a looker as well. My Super Sea Wolf came on a beautiful Milanese and also shipped with a tapered tropic and a seatbelt type strap. Those might have worked better with this one also. Not every watch has a serial killer named after it either! 😂
I love my white dial Zodiac '53 Super Seawolf even better than my Omega Seamaster 300 Coax Master, but, the very first thing I did after getting it was to replace the bracelet with an olive tropic strap.
I have the stainless steel bezel variant of this watch - the one shown @ 1:07. Adore the watch, but agree with the niggles about the bracelet. I have almost all the additional links taken out and the taper is even more dramatic. I would have appreciated the option to get this one on a jubilee.
Glad to see they kept the crosshairs logo despite the Zodiac killer using it also. Maybe it's a case of "there's no such thing as bad publicity" or maybe the murders are just a U.S. thing.
Solid, honest review. Want to really like the Zodiac brand, but price point is an issue here. The look of the dial and bezel works, but can’t believe the insert is mineral!!
Too bad about the bracelet but you hit the nail on the head with the black strap you used! It's amazing how much better the watch looks with the strap as it really makes the watch stand out. That's what they should have shipped the watch with instead of floundering around with the bracelet half-heartedly. Have you thought of being a strap consultant for watch manufacturers? :-D
i think i'll stick with my seiko 5, it cost me 125 bucks it keeps good time i have had it since fathers day and haven't noticed any loss since i set it to my computer and its automatic, every night when i go to bed i give it 5 seconds under my led desk lamp, around 10 pm and when i get up to piss at 5:30 its still glowing. i don't know what they used on it but its good stuff
The stepped tapering link problem and the Cheranometer clasp devalue this watch or, actually, do they punch right through the myth of "Swiss watch": assmembled in Switzerland of parts made elsewhere?
Zodiac, like Mido and Rado, are brands that have been around for a long time, it is cool they still around bringing back their old models but changing them slightly to make them modern. This GMT looks really nice and definitely has the retro look, is pretty much just like the models from back in the late '60s, early '70s. Nice vid Jody!
Accounting for inflation, I paid less money than this for my Omega Seamaster Professional Bond in 2001- with none of your moans or niggles. I also paid this a couple of years ago for a genuine vintage Omega Seamaster De Ville with a true in-house Omega 550 caliber (the best movement Omega made)- in 18k solid gold. It’s a nice watch but comparing it to vintage pieces kills it; you could buy my Bond for about this money.
Even now in my 50,s I realise that amongst the microbrands you are paying simply for whats on the dial.Much better value to be had elsewhere especially if like me you prefer quartz.
@@Andrew.W75 Hiya.No what I meant was Zodiac is a bigger known brand but small microbrands give alot but are not " posh magazine" advert brands.Zodiac like many bigger branded companies that went bust had their name only bought out and price on the back of said name.It doesnt always follow that they are worth their badge anymore.
I absolutely love the Super Sea Wolf design and history. The square hands and markers just really do it for me. But what’s keeping me from pulling the trigger is how much they lose value on the secondhand market. I’d rather buy it used and have someone else take the retail hit. I’m just waiting on one to come up in the right color way and the right bracelet (butterfly clasp seems the way to go) configuration. Great vid as usual! The clasp on this one is disappointing.
The value just never seems to be there with Zodiac. Shame, as they have some great designs and there's of course the added element of who they're associated with... Nice timing on the review, too
Totally agreed and an excellent post. They are excellent watches and I would expect to pay above the average - but are simply charging more than their offerings are worth.
Jody mate. What are you trying to do to me......I just cought up with your Doxa/frog show. And I just couldn't decide. But now..... wow 👌 this bad boy looks ace.
Like the watch and I could live with some rough edges if it is a Pagani or similar for $180, but for$1800 I expect stuff to be flawless, rounded etc, but again why do I care since I will never be able to afford this nor would I spend that kind of money on a watch. Good video though, as almost always
Hi Jody; the case is not exactly the same as non-GMT models; the polished chamfer is not present and the lug to lug is a 1mm longer in the normal divers. Ps we have many reviews of zodiac on our channel
Coming from an Aussie rules fan I think you might have slipped a Rugby reference in there Jody.😉 Nice watch but that clasp and all those sharp edges are a travesty mate. Once again great review.👍
I find the combination of the bezel and rehaut just too busy for me, and it may just be me, but is that bracelet a different colour from the body of the watch.
As usual, great video mate. If you haven't already, you should check out the new reissues of the Citizen Bullheads. Been considering getting one and would love to know your take on them. Cheers.
The quality is mostly there but the price makes me think twice... Quite a busy dial but yeah this is a worldtimer. Well, my favorite worldtimer is the Omega but the price is not in my range. 😝
Great video! Prefer their Standard GMT but it is also in a super competitive price range, which means I would likely never buy it just admire it... Other than the San Martin or Cronos (Rolex Homage) GMT, I struggle thinking of a GMT that is much cheaper w/ similar quality - at least off the top of my head.

Jody - you are my go-to guy for honest watch reviews, but today you didn’t discuss the GMT functionality of this watch. Is it a caller GMT or a true GMT?
As much as I like the brand and have a Sea Dragon and beautiful ABTW Sea Wolf, original prices of recent releases are too high.1800$ for this watch is too much, like 5 hundred. There are many options like Farer or Baltic(on Soprod too),which costs much less. But all in all Im pretty sure Ill pull the trigger on another this year,I just love their colourways 🤪
Some nice design points but so many let downs, a pretty recurring pattern with zodiac, and to me, at that price, it is just unacceptable. So as usual when I see a zodiac, it is a big mehhh for me
It’s always funny how everyone jumps on the bandwagon when it comes to Seiko’s pressed clasps. Well, I’ll take a pressed Seiko clasp anytime over this poor milled excuse for a clasp. Would it hurt them to put a simple 2-button release on it at this price point?
Extra points for the Aphex Twin!

I like it. Stick it on a tropic, vintage vibes and takes care of bracelet issues
Great to see Zodiac on the channel 👍. The divers on the jubilee bracelet are way more comfortable and look better in my opinion 😉
My first vintage watch purchase was a 1960s seawolf. The case is similar to these reissues.
I've got the watermelon colourway and it comes with a great jubilee bracelet with butterfly clasp, so the non GMT/worldtime version might float your boat more.
I have the original Sea Wolf date white dial. That watch is pretty much perfect for any occasion.
That bracelet is a miss… I think even a mesh would look pretty good
Not that it’s in my budget anyway 😅
The watch cost $1,795.00 USD.
They actually have a nice bracelet for their Sea Wolves
@@Not_me9791 Yeah, I have one and can vouch for their comfort. But the pin and collar system on the jubilee is pretty annoying.

Superb detail analysis about the clasp, you dont see this in other watch channels! Superb attention to details, thumbs up Jody!

I've got one and its great, can't recommend enough.
Although the whole range is a bit above my paygrade, I do think that the modern white-green look that you popped in the corner is great fun!
