- This is the original archival mono audio edit master of the "Eyewitness News" theme from 1968. It includes portions of the theme heard during the early years of the program when the closing credits ran long. Legendary WABC-TV News Director Albert T Primo selected Lalo Schifrin's "Tar Sequence" cue from "Cool Hand Luke" as the musical signature theme for his new "Eyewitness News" format. Primo edited Schifrin's score, and created the instantly recognizable, iconic news theme used for 24 years on WABC-TV in New York, and other markets.

IIRC, every Friday after Eyewitness News ended its early evening newscast, they used to run the credits and during them, they would show footage from behind the scenes of Eyewitness News. That happened, I want to say, in the late 1960s-early 1970s, again IIRC
Uh ohhhhhhhh! I'd just stumbled upon finding this theme song on Eyewitness News. WABC-TV Channel 7 Team. Ernie Anastos, William "Bill" Beutel, Roger Grimsby, Joan Lunden( before became famous on Good Morning America), John Johnson, Spencer Christian, Storm Field, Rose Ann Scambella. Ohhh , back in the days (in which I was born in Brooklyn NY,1977). From the time I was a newborn baby (in which I was supposed to be playing with toys and blocks and infant baby music, that is at the time of my birth),up until by the time me and my family moved to Chicago by 1989, and came back in 1999, ten years later (20 years ago), Eyewitness News became an American Icon. Not just in New York, but Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego?, San Francisco, etc. Happy 50th Birthday to Eyewitness News. And don't forget Geraldo Rivera (now on Fox and Friends cable network) too. Only one thing: While they used this theme, KABC did not use that exact edit crafted by WABC audio editors. Only the other three (WLS, WXYZ and KGO) did.

First time I saw Cold Hand Luke in the early 90s I was totally confused. WTF?? Why are they using the Eyewitness News theme? I very quickly came to my senses and realized it was the other way around and still I was like WTF 😂
Most people had the reaction you had when they first heard it because their first exposure to it was on TV, not in the movie.
Because the media is there to keep us from gettin' too much rabbit in our blood.

ABC rolled this out to the sister stations of WABC, all of them broadcasting on Channel 7: KGO San Francisco; WLS Chicago; KABC Los Angeles and WXYZ Detroit. Some of the ABC affiliates in other cities used this as well, and some of them (like KTRK Houston) became owned-and-operated with the Cap Cities merger of 1986.
The theme was also used by stations that were not affiliated with ABC, such as WTVJ (Miami), KVOA (Tucson), and WLUK (Green Bay).
KABC still uses it.
WXYZ was branded Action News... From Michigan's #1 New Leader this is the 6o'clock edition of Action News with Bill Bonds.
KTRK, as far as I know, Used Cool hand up to 1984. After 1984, They were among the first to use the News Series 2000 theme, which is heavily influenced by The Tar Sequence. When KTRK became a Cap Cities/ABC O/O in 1986, they (KTRK) were using NS2000.
Soon after, Most ABC O/O's (WPVI being the obvious exception) changing over to NS2000 by 1990,. Then, most of the Same Stations then went over to the still used Eyewitness News music package By 1996, except WLS, who used their new NS2000 Plus theme from 1992 to 2013, at which time they too adopted the Eyewitness News theme package, and KGO, who used numerous themes (NS2000 and NS2000 Plus among them) until 2006 when they Adopted the Eyewitness News Theme package.
To this day, the ONLY ABC O/O that DOES NOT currently use the Eyewitness News Theme is WPVI, who has used Move Closer to Your World CONTINUOUSLY for 50 years with (ALMOST) NO interruption, OK I Said ALMOST NO interruption. There was a period of about 5 days in September of 1996 when WPVI used a new Variant of MCTYW by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, but thanks to HEAVY backlash from viewers in the Delaware Valley, The original MCTYW was restored within 5 days of the changeover.
@@davidmatthewvinotjr8396 - KTRK began using the "Tar Sequence" cue from "Cool Hand Luke" in spring 1980 for just the opening theme for its 10:00 p.m. newscast. All other newscasts retained "Move Closer to Your World" until fall 1982.
In Detroit, WXYZ used the same music, but with the “Action News” format

@@TheScottVincentArchive - Of course, KABC went directly to the original "Cool Hand Luke" soundtrack LP, they didn't use the edit WABC put together. (Nor, after 1978 or so, did KGO on their "News Scene.")
They used this same theme in San Francisco and L.A. news during this era…and probably everywhere else, too. I remember it because it was such FRANTIC music.

I remember comedian Steve Allen having a parody during his 1970's comedy show called "Eyewitless News."
Long-time theme of KVOA's newscasts in Tucson despite the fact that KVOA was with NBC, not ABC.
I believe WABC-TV went to a modified version of that in the '80s.

Nine Network Australia still use this theme (although it's been updated several times) to this day. Such a cool theme.
Also the theme of RPN-9's Newswatch.

And they followed that with Gari's "Hello News" package, perhaps the greatest in the history of the medium.
