Guess what, i had my MDF from long time ant thought its time for more expensive one. I tried very many brands but something was not right. In the end i realized that gaggia MDF was a phenomenal grinder just because it has slowest grinding speed of all and produced much tastier espresso.
I had the MDF with a doser and now have the Rocky without a doser. The Rocky is great, but the switch position and having to hold it down on the DOSERLESS is NOT great at all. Now running without doser, I think I am more of a fan of having the doser, and would suggest it over doserless to anyone on the fence. Being able to dump extra back in hopper and just turn on and let run for grind time is great. It is a complete shame that the MDF appears to not be available any more. Super review as always! Even though this is a flashback... lol
Hi BP, Thanks for the comment! Yes, this video does go back a few years! Dosing grinders have become less popular over the years. A big shift away from them with the emergence of third wave specialty coffee and focus on freshness. Like you, some do appreciate the workflow. Used to be quite common to overfill a PF and level off excess coffee into the dosing hopper. Marc
Actually you dont need three hands to adjust the doserless Rocky, just put the side of your right palm on the little button and use your fingers of the same hand to turn the doser while your left hand works the grind button.
thanks for all your videos , please if i could select one of those or similar range grinder for Turkish ans espresso coffee which one you wile recommend to me ?
I have the gaggia MDF, It bugs me that the steps between the two perfect spots are two far apart. I find myself wanting to place it between two settings. Also the non-removable filter holder is just a poor solution - it is supposed to be able to grind for drip, but you cannot place any container to hold the coffee. I finally decided to hack-off the bit, and I was never happier :) The MDF always makes a mess unless you hold the portafilter to the actual hole and dose directly. It's missing rubber feet which you can get in any hardware store really cheap. I don't know why they didn't include them?
+Alex Kovachevic Hi Alex, Agree with you on the rubber feet! It's an easy upgrade most owners do. As for having the perfect grind in between settings a common way of dealing with that is to adlust dose by about a gram up/down to compensate.

Hi man, the Rancilio lets you set more "millimetrically" but the Gaggia doesn´t, for example with the espresso machine I used to grind my coffee in #1 with the Gaggia MDF but with the Rancilio I usually grind something between #5 and #7, (because some coffee beans need a different grind). I recommend the Rancilio. The quality of all those three grinders are pretty good. Best Regards Daniel VR
The Rocky is just a poorly designed grinder. In addition to changing the grind setting while grinding (did Rancilio do any design testing?), the portafilter rack is set so high that when you finish grinding, the coffee is above the bottom of the spout; hence, when you remove the portafilter, coffee is knocked off all over the counter (did Rancilio do any design testing?). A reputable company would redesign the rack and send new ones out to their customers.

Hi guys! I really enjoy watching your videos, they're really interesting, I have a question for you, if I could get the Dose Control Pro and the Gaggia MDF at the same price, which one would you recommend me to buy for a multipurpose grinder? I'm only looking for French press, Chemex and V60 grinding. Thank you very much!
Hi Cesar, Thanks for your comment and questiopn! I'd go with the DCP. The MDF is a more robust grinder but it's a doser, so more suited to filling a portafilter for espresso. The DCP is good for grinding directly into a portafilter but has clearance for grinding into a paper filter or other container. You'll probably appreciate the timer function of the DCP as well.

Hi! I had some thoughts about the doser as well and the timer will be great, so I'll go for the DCP then. Thank you very much for answering this question, I'm looking forward for your next videos!

+Whole Latte Love As I want to get that black carousel out in order to brush all the leftover coffee grinds and thoroughly wipe the dosing compartment, I need to get that dosing handle out first. However, the handle can’t be pulled out by my own force as it is firmly attached to the dosing lever. Is there any method to get that handle out in an easier way?
Cant these guys produce a good grinder that DOESN'T get grinds all over the worktop...I mean its not rocket science to figure it out surely ? My worktop is white quartz and it would look a total mess 24/7 with these
Hi Paul, Thanks for the comment. Some grinders do better than others as far as spill. But even with the best you may get some. One goal of grinding into a portafilter is even distribution of the grounds. That requires living on the edge of coffee filling evenly and sometimes spraying a bit.
I can't imagine myself recommending a Rocky grinder to anyone. $365 is a lot of money for a grinder that has no features whatsoever, despite being a well-built grinder. The whole grind adjustment thing with three hands is just embarrassing.
It’s not for anyone. If you read the user manual, you will see it says not to adjust the grind with beans in the hopper. I only pursue ristretto grind, so once set and matched with the beans The Rocky doserLESS is great!
6 years old but still helping out!!!! I might still buy the Gaggia MDF but not sure

+Whole Latte Love True - but they have a huge "range" for drip even, but it's designed for espresso since it has the portafilter holder
Could you please do a comparison between the Baratza Sette 270 and the Rancilio Rocky? I'm trying to decide which way to go. Thanks.
So what is the conclusion? Is Gaggia MDF gave fine result for the espresso machine?
Hi Ali, Yes, the MDF can grind fine for espresso.
Whole Latte Love thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Daniel Vásquez Rodríguez sure you prefer Rancilio, but the MDF is offering lower cost (price) for me he he he.
Of course man, that one has a better price, is a big $ difference hahaha, anyways the MDF works fine and get the job done, so it's a good option.

Our pleasure and thanks for watching! New video coming today: Nutella Dressed Flat White
Excellent, I'll watch it :)
I have a problem with the Ranchello coffee grinder which is fixed numbers and the difficulty of moving the disc also does not move

Does the Baratz Vario have a gear reduction system? What about the Brevillle grinders?
+ascosta The Vario uses a low revving DC motor connected by a belt drive system to a transmission to reduce noise. Breville uses a gear box.
Very nice video. May I know how to pull out the doser handle of the Gaggia MDF? It is super tightly attached to the lever.
+billy KO Can you clarify? Not certain what you are referring too.

+ascosta They are built to last. You are right the 2 hand adjustment is not for everyone.
