- The trusty Rancilio Rocky grinder receives un updated Crew Review from Brendan and Gail! They'll walk you through the options (doser or doserless), dial the grinder in and even show you how to remove the burrs for maintenance!

I have had a rocky doserless for 8 years or more and the only thing I have replaced is the coffee that goes into the hopper, it's that reliable. Transitioning back to a finer grind from a coarser one can be a chore but there is an easier way to do it. I stick the end of a stick pen in the lock slider to prevent it from locking the hopper and allowing free movement between stops. No third hand required.
The process is made a whole lot easier by doing exactly what you did after using the third hand method. After a time the burr set threads get clogged with ground coffee and because the threading is so fine the hopper binds when being rotating. Using the process of removing the top burr like u demonstrated will allow for a much smoother turning experience.
That said because I maintain and make sure the threads of the burrs are kept clean and have had years of experience using the machine, (read: "do this at your own peril") I do a quick cycle of the electric grind switch, then rotate the hopper a few degrees making sure that the hopper turns smoothly (no binding), cycle the electric grind switch then rotate the hopper a few degrees, repeat til I am back to a setting useful for espresso grinding. Again do this at your own risk.
On another note, I enjoy these video's because I am a coffee geek, but for most this is just like all the other 1000 or so coffee related pages, dry, and without any remark-ability. I miss Kat.
I have a grinder with doser. 1 or 2 shots a day. I just weigh out my coffee and grind just what I need no problem. The advantage is that the doser breaks up the clumps that you might get.
Since I moved to Vashon, I can't get up to your lovely shop as often as I'd like... but thankfully, I don't have to. You've got this wonderful RUclips channel that I can peruse regularly instead. Thank you for this update on the Rocky burr grinder, it was very helpful. Bookmarked for future reference. :)
Had the doser version; returned it for the doserless version. I pull shots 2-3 times/day with the Rocky/SilviaPID combo. One adorable selling point: the components on the front of the doserless Rocky looks like a lion's face. :3 That definitely needs to be added as a bullet point on the doserless' description, haha. Thanks as always for the informative videos (and the painless product exchange)!
I'm sure the rocker switch to activate the grinder can be replaced with a stay put switch or the switch can be bypassed and a foot lever switch can be replaced with a foot lever switch if you're up for something technical like that.
Would you use the Rancilio coffee grinder to grind black pepper?
always very helpful and why I've chosen to do some business with SCG. Jura could learn a thing or two about the benefits of user serviceable machines from Rancilio. The lost me as a customer because I can't clean my own grinder. My super automatic is going to the landfill because their minimum $285 fee to look at my machine which only needs the grinder cleaned. I go as far as to say they are the most environmentally irresponsible company I've ever dealt with.
I use my left foot as a third hand. It feels ridiculous, but kinda fun. Good thing I'm spry.
In regards to adjusting to a finer grind.....Is the same to be said when dealing with conical burrs?
Hello there! Thank you so much for all of your helpful videos. I am learning so much. I have been using a Bodem Burr grinder for the past six years and it is finally on its last legs. I currently grind for aeropress coffee and my partner grinds for French press. I really would like to purchase the rocky, but I'm concerned that switching back-and-forth could be a real pain each morning. We also use different beans. Could you please guide me in the best direction based on my parameters? Should we just have two grinders? Perhaps go with the Breville pro? I would prefer to invest in a grinder not have to replace due to lesser quality which is why the Rocky is at the top of my list. Thank you in advance!
The Breville Smart Grinder Pro may be a good option... programmable options for different grind times, and removable hopper with a bean stopper which is a big thing if you're swapping out beans often. The Rocky is definitely a top pick for longevity, but will be a bit less fun to change beans with.
Anyone know an ideal range using this grinder for expresso?
I'm really surprised there's no mention of the Rancilio Rocky constantly clogging and needing to be shaken or tapped to keep the beans moving. This has never been an issue with any other grinder I've owned, including the one built in to my Jura S9. Had I known I would not have bought this grinder. There are several comments about this on Amazon reviews. One says Rancilio says it has to do with humidity and finer grinds, but it happens even in the heat of the dry Sacramento Valley where my weekend house is and at the coarsest grind even. This is ridiculous to spend this much on a grinder and then have to constantly shake it about to keep it going. No mention of this at all?
When i adjust to finer (for espresso) i just remove all the beans first in the hopper then grind till there are no more beans to grind.. .. Then always start to finest setting, few knots down 3 to 4.. Refill the hopper then from there.. go coarser til you get your right grind.. Works for me.. 😂
Or instead of putting all the beans during calibration, you can fill it few at a time..
Or just weigh the "bean" cup by cup and grind all each cup, setting by setting.
I love my Rocky with the following caveats: I dislike that it retains 1.4 grams of grinds. These are easily disgorged by removing the grind tray, tipping the unit forward and tapping them out, but it's a design flaw and proves tiresome. It also clumps terribly when grinding for espresso, but this can be rectified using the Weiss Distribution Technique. Otherwise it's a good grinder for the money and a nice match with my Silvia.
Thank you for the review! Are you also planning a redux for the Baratza Encore?
We can definitely add a redux for the Baratza Encore to the list! We have quite a few that need to be updated. :-) I'll let our production team know about your request. - Sarah
Hey Gail, have you ever commented to Rancillio about changing the design so that you don't need three hands to adjust the grind settings?
Or you could just do it without the grinder running, without any coffee in there. That's what I do with mine and I've never felt that I put it at risk or got a bad calibration.
I think the new version, the one I just bought, the manual says never change the grind setting wile the grinder is running! they must have changed the designÉ
Seattle Coffee Gear if you don't have any coffee can you adjust finer without running the motor?
Michael Greco Whenever you are adjusting to a finer setting you want to motor running so that any thing that is in-between the burrs will be ground out. Otherwise your risk damaging the machine and not properly making the adjustment. Even if the hopper is empty, there can still be bean pieces down inside the burr.
I just received my Rocky grinder and as I get on the coarser settings, the lever used to adjust the grind is lose. I am not sure if that makes sense, but when I am on the coarser setting, i have to maneuver the lever for it to remain on the setting i desire (example, 42). Is that normal or is mine defective?
+Gricel Serrano Can you describe the issue a little more? Does the adjustment not stay in place?
+Seattle Coffee Gear exactly. it stays in place at the finer settings, but not as easily in the coarser setting. i have to manuever the little button to make it stay in place.
+Gricel Serrano It sounds like a grinder cleaning/calibration will help your issue. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/L8lcbVYcPKk/видео.html Cheers!
Thanks. Could that be a reason I cannot get my espresso grind right? My shots are coming out too fast and the pressure on my Breville Dual boiler is all the way to 13. I keep on trying to try different grinds and I cannot find it. What am I doing wrong? I have gone through bags of espresso (freshly roasted espresso).
+Gricel Serrano It sounds like a cleaning and calibration would fix this issue. Make sure the threads are totally clean before twisting the upper burr back into place. (A vacuum and brush are great tools for this!) Give that a shot and let us know if it solves your issue.
So you have to grind 17g of to shoot out stale grinds from the chute at every new grind session????? There's no way to purge out old grind?? That's silly
Press down the top "button" with your right thumb and pull/turn with your other fingers
what number is best for french press?
I like 40.
so...if I am here alone, which is the usual as I live alone, and I am grinding a new variety of coffee...how do I adjust the grind to be finer while the motor is on, if I have to have 3 hands to do it??? Is this something that people complain about with this grinder? I had pretty much decided that this was the one...but now, wondering....
Right hand, press down on the button with the base of the hand (like a karate chop) rotate with fingers. Use left hand for the rocker switch to activate the grinder. I use the technique everyday. Someone at SCG Bellevue showed it to me.
I modded my Rocky to have a push button and the on/off switch. This makes it easier to adjust the grind and was fairly cheap and easy to do. This also lets you convert a doser to doserless and vice versa.

MrMopbucket Thanks for the tip. Going with the Rocky...got a stone in the last bag of locally roasted coffee that I purchased...I could just replace the burrs, but it's a Smart Grinder, so...think I'll just upgrade instead. Thanks again.
I have had my rocky for almost 2 years. I have never used the three hand method. I never knew you needed to be running the grinder to change the settting. I hope I did not screw something up. I have not noticed any problems.
MidwestGamerHD Running the grinder while changing the grind settings really only matters when you are making the grind finer. If you adjust the grind finer while not running the grinder, there is a higher possibility of getting beans stuck between the burrs and causing a clog. ~ Sarah
Hi Gail,
I was thinking that even though kat has gone(boohoo;( ) maybe you could get someone like Shiami to do your videos and keep the fun? It seems a bit TOO professional. Just a request, thank you very much for keeping the vids though!
Design flaws aplenty compared to the new Baratza Sette.
