Mother night is such a masterpiece. I am a huge fan of the book, and was very shocked of Kurt Vonengut's magnificent writing style. I now realized that there was a movie of Mother Night, so I watched the movie right away. The movie also expressed and sticked with the composition of the book. I strongly recommend you all the read the book, and also watch the movie.
"Howard" didn't truly understand the damage that was done until he saw that old film of himself and the hatred left in it's wake. He thought after time it would just pass or people would forget. They didn't. That's why I think he was so willing to turn himself over at the end. Brilliant acting by Nolte. Maybe one of his best roles ever. And a compelling story.
Well, at least he was more of a man then the people that sent him. And was braver and more upright than the country that allowed him to be sent. But the reality is, he was who he was because of the hatred that was/is embedded deeply in the country that sent him.
This is one of THE BEST MOVIES I have EVER SEEN, EVER. The storyline is original. The acting, is amazing. The budget is right. It's FROM A BOOK, inspired from WW2. Kurt Vonnegut, an expert writer. The MOVIE makers of his book!? Experts. WHO KNOWS how many could of actually did this, IN REAL LIFE!? There's a special place IN HEAVEN for ANYONE who did this, FOR THE U.S.A.! :.D
Wow! This is an incredible movie! The acting, the story, and the dialogue came together to to produce a rare experience! I wan't watching Nikc Nolte, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, I was watching a story about these characters who came off as real people! Rare indeed! It was a tightly woven piece with a steady rhythm. Highly recommended!
What did you think? I just finished the audio book, and it was devastating. The least humorous or forgiving of his books, and the most disturbing. I can't see why it isn't more famous than it is.
I loved the novel also...one of my favorites of Vonnegut, and one of his least celebrated...and this film did not disappoint, it's an excellent adaptation...also the only movie where I actually liked Nick Nolte's acting (usually I find him too ham-handed in his roles, yelling rather than acting.... But he was good in this one IMO)
@@joshgellis9463 Well, it is more than 20 years old. However, Mother Night plays really strong, probably even better today. A movie group I'm in recently screened it, and everybody was pretty much floored by it. "You must be careful what you pretend to be because, in the end you are who you pretend to be."
This is extraordinary movie great acting by all but a especially difficult role for Nick Nolte, so many facades to his character and overcoming a very difficult subject matter.
The Kurt Vonnegut novella is superb. One of my favourite pieces of literature. But I still haven't seen this (it's not easy to get hold of). The trailer is good though, and Nolte is a great actor. Can anyone tell me how it compares to the book?
@GregOrCreg "Kurt Vonnegut novella." There is no "Kurt Vonnegut novella." It's a full-length novel. It's been available on DVD for many years. It's the most faithful film adaptation I've ever seen, one of the 100 greatest movie masterpieces ever made.
@argentik82 "This film (and its novel) was ahead of it's time..." Fake compliment alert! No work of art is ahead of its time. You just wanted to compliment yourself.
Just finished the book. Didn't have an impact on me the way his other books have. Looked up reviews on Amazon and it's five stars. I was a little surprised.
@chrismoroney3015 "He was the Bob Grant of his day" What a vicious, dishonest thing to say. You obviously never listened to Bob Grant. Don't lie and say you did!
This movie is so underrated
Nick Nolte should have won an Oscar for this role.
They wouldn’t have allowed that to happen.

TY - i just read in his book of letters that this movie was a book of his! I didn’t know any of his books became movies! ❤

Twisted but incredible. A triumph of filmmaking.
Fine film very faithful to this exraordinary novel...

*how many could HAVE actually DONE this
Come on, man, if you're going to tout a story by Vonnegut then pay attention to your grammar.
Great film. Great actors. Alan arkin. Sheryl lee. Goodman. Great story. 10/10.
Best book to movie adaptation ever filmed
I just don't understand why they cut the final confrontation between Campbell and O'Hare. Why cast David Strathairn if you're not going to use him?

I felt same. Great film.
It was awful lmao
Currently reading the book of this and happy to discover a film was made. Hope it does the book justice.
What did you think?

@@sushitime8622 it really is devastating.
The movie is amazing. I have yet to read the book though.
I need to watch the movie. I've read the book twice. It's one of my favorite Vonnegut novels.
Nike does a performance that takes my breath away !!!
Might be Nick Nolte's best work
Adored the novel (the best I read in 2017), I must watch this.

MN was my favorite novel from KVJ and I was not dissappointed. Get a copy!
one of the truest movies to book!
People tend to forget too regularly that we are only the sum of our actions. Hope this gets a modern adaptation.
brockhampilton The movie is really not that old.

I should read the book. This movie had a profound effect on my worldview.
one the best movie from the VHS era
Awesome story i was considered strange as a kid for liking this movie
I like the sound of this 'Nick Nolte' fella.. does he have a podcast?
do you know the more I hear about this Hitler fella the less I care for him. He sounds like a real jerk.
I read the book and it’s really good :D
Great film 👍
This is perhaps my favorite adaption of book to film and it is one of Kurt Vonnegut's best books.

It's different but its just as good. The movie is good enough that you can forgive the changes.
It's superb, and only a smidge different. Certainly the best Vonnegut to screen adaptation (which I *know* is a low bar). Vonnegut liked it, so...

I seen this trailer when I was a kid, I love John Goodman I had to look for it and search it lol I want to watch it.
The first minute is amazing.

I watched this movie years ago I liked it but found it so strange.
Just finished the book. Didn't have an impact on me the way his other books have. Looked up reviews on Amazon and it's five stars. I was a little surprised.
Nothing fictional here
He was the Bob Grant of his day

Idole
Sheryl Lee??????? I might have to watch/
She's fantastic, just what you'd expect, if you read the book. There's a tear stain on a page of my paperback copy, involving her character.
LAURA?!!
🏔🦉🏔
no c c 's = thumbs down
He speaks the truth in his speech.
So many red pills dropped at the beginning of the trailer
