If you recall I had similar issues and I went down the rabbit hole for levamisole I used 2 ppm in my 55g planted tank because I was showing signs of intestinal worms via fish hiding, not eating, and stringy white Feces and of course Emaciated I did 1 treatment and waited 24 hrs and then did a full water change I was unsure if I needed to do it again so I observed the fish and from the one treatment all fish were eating again and passing the normal color Feces and just overall happy so that was it... I have not had to do it again and all look healthy and eating in the tank and again I used a very small amount just to start 2ppm and it seemed to work ok 👍
what a great video Dan....great hypothesis about this process for sure....we are happy he's doing well....we have a lot of these guys and now we are more ready for issues if they ever have any....we are lucky and we have not really ever had issues with ours and they are very hardy....thanks dude!
I had a similar experience with a CL that wouldn't grow. He wasn't skinny; he just wouldn't grow. I put it down to being the Gamma loach. He ate and acted completely normal. I only lost him to an ich outbreak, while the other two survived the outbreak. Now my remaining two loaches are a good 4" long and chubby.
Yay!! Ty! I have 2 skinny kuhli loaches.... my daughter bought them for me. I have had clown loaches before that died before. I have API here but nothing else. I am off to treat my fish. I hope this works!
Levamisole is round worm type medication. Trust me, If it had round worm you would see the worms atleast at some point. With round worm, even after treating theres no gaurantee the fish will live due to the damage it caused. The fish most likely had spironucleas parasite. Which is a micro protozoan parasite in their intestines. Yes metronidazole treats this, which is probably why the fish are improving. Its not specific to loaches and its pretty common in fish I believe.
Another great video Dan....... really interesting . It's great information that all of us now have to try or at least consider, should a problem fish arise.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I wonder if clown loaches are catching a parasite from eating infected snails? Glad the loach is on the mend If a parasite kills its host, its not a successful parasite lol
This is a perplexing issue. I had up to 10 clown loaches and I’m now down to two. Seven died eventually of skinny disease and one beauty jumped out of the aquarium. Of the two I have, I believe one has skinny disease. I’ve tried General Cure but it didn’t help me. I don’t think I’ll purchase more clown loaches as they get pricey. It’s sad to see these two loaches in a 180 gallon aquarium by themselves as they do well in a group of at least six. Maybe I’ll pick up a Red Tail Shark.
I have 11 CL's in my 240 that range in size from 7" down to 2.5. All the females are huge and thick, while the males are long and slimmer through the body, yet I have both male and females that are 5 to 7 inches long. They grow really slow. Knock on wood, I've never had a problem with my LCs in the 6 years I have had them. They are in a super stocked tank of 60 African Cichlids ranging in size from 3" to 12" Haps, Peacocks and Mbuna as well as 6 Places and 2 catfish. The CL in this video looks like male. He is long and slim. The bio load on this tank is very heavy as I feed 2 times a day. My filtration system consist of 3 30 gallon tuff totes. First Chamber had 3 layers of filter pads fine to course. then the next 30 gallon tote has plants - photos mainly but also some Duck Weed and Water Hyasine. The final 30 gallon chamber his tons of 2 by 2 Bio blocks and a few 8X8" bio blocks and the return pump. I only do 20 to 40% water changes 1 a month. test for Ammonia, nitrite and nitrates is 0 to 5 parts per million all month.
I have the same problem,, two are skinny and the others are fine , trouble is,, api don’t do generally cure in the uk, 🇬🇧 may have to order some from your country and have it shipped over,, got to be worth a shot,, thank you for a very informative video 🙏🐟🐠🐟🐠
Everything I've read suggested Levamisole as the only cure to wasting disease but it is really difficult to find in the US. Our CL was really sick so we treated him with Fenbenzadole (per the advise of our great lfs) 3 weeks ago and he is finally doing better and beginning to gain some mass. We've been told to treat with Metroplex to prevent further infection from parasites detaching. General Cure is a great product though so I'm not surprised it helped. So happy your CL is doing better 😊
I had a CL that did same thing and it was super skinny for months i started feeding it some raw meat left over from my musk turtles dinner as that also lives in the same tank and now its fat as ever and has vibrant colours 😂🤷♂️
Nice video. I have 9 clown loaches in a 140g tank (along with 2 big Rose Lines). All of which I inherited. The 3 largest loaches are "skinny" but in all ways behave perfectly normal. All the fish go nutso at feeding time. The person who I got the fish from said that look was normal for them, but it just felt off to me and I finally researched it. I bought some PraziPro today based on the fish store's recommendation, but now I'm thinking that it may not work for the "skinny disease", funny thing is the guy also said I could try API General Cure but for some reason I chose PraziPro. Questions for you, is your loach still doing well, and did you treat the fish per the instructions or did you treat the food? Since my tank is pretty big I'm hoping to just treat the food but I'd like to make sure that's safe for the fish. Thanks!
Is that a Rainbow Shark? How do you keep him from raising Hell with your Clown Loach? My RTS completely HATED my two Clown Loaches. They never got a moment's peace. I finally traded him in for another CL. I later got some conspecific Panda Garras that were perfect for dithering my still terrorized loaches out of hiding
I’m having the exact same thing happen in my tank. Bought them and brought them home (originally bought 9 but only 5 made it. Only one died within a few days of purchase. The others stayed skinny and died a long time later. I e seen the only sick one start to gain weight. Used melafix for fin rot on guppies my bf bought me. Clown loaches ate all of them. Can I get a colony of snails large enough to keep up with my CLs appetite? I tried 50 rams horn and I haven’t seen anything but shells., stuck to the intake tubes. Put 3 in a 10 gallon, and I have 100s. Lol Tysm for the video.
It’s actually hard to get right now ... we’ll in my area of the states Vancouver, wa I tried searching everywhere and online it’s all 2 weeks out and by then my fish would have been toast luckily the levamisole worked for me ... worked for me is the key phrase I’m not sure if it was luck or the medicine but my fish are alive and happy
@@Mrabc123 one of my tanks (guppys only) has skinny fish and esha levamisole didn't work for me unfortunately. I'd love to see if general cure would help because there aren't many good dewormer products available in the UK.
I tried everything, but they all died eventually. I wish you the best of luck, but don't really feel like I have much advice to give. I will say that at least in my case, I don't believe it was parasites that did it. No idea what killed them, but I don't believe it was worms.
most if not all loaches come from very clean water so maybe your recent big water changes and upkeep have also contributed. do you run activated carbon after medicating?
I have this problem with one of my clownloaches, but it's impossible to get general cure where I live. Does anyone have any other treatments I could try?
Hi I'm in England and can't seem to find any over here is it just called API general cure or am I searching for wrong thing thanks lost 2 over the last year and now a 3rd looks like he's going skinny
Is melafix like API general cure? One of my clown loaches now has skinny disease (or I have finally noticed)and he has been in the tank for three years and was always fine but has never really grown. (Live in Canada & find api general cure.) What is everyone’s opinion on how garlic soaked food works?
General cure is not the same as Melafix. I have no idea if the garlic will help. It's about the only thing I didn't try. I couldn't save any of mine, no matter what I treated them with, so I wish you all the best and good luck. It's really frustrating sometimes.
Glad to see your Clown Loach is on the mend.

I love that you had no hope for the loach at all but you still tryed to help it. That's a good fish keeper

I wish I had one for positive diagnosis of ich.

If a parasite kills its host, its not a successful parasite lol
Almost all clown loaches are wild caught, which is a good reason to quarantine them and treat them for parasites when you buy them.
API General Cure review............THUMBS UP :)
Worked for me.
I've always been a big fan of the APi fish medications.

I have heard you are meant to treat again 3 to 4 weeks later, incase they are any eggs still hanging around.
Makes sense.
Hey Dan, do you think I could do 30 Rummy Nose Tetras and a Pearl Gourami in a 60g with a Rainbow shark?
I don't see why not.

Do intestinal parasites (in other fish) survive in brackish water?
I assume so. It's the environment inside the fish that matters most.

what kind of fish is that huge grey fish? thx :)
I'm guessing you mean the Snakeskin gourami.
There are lots of parasites that are species specific.
