I remember in the late 60s when I was young, we lived near a siren in Minnetonka and I used to take my dad's shortwave headset and cover my ears during the monthly tests!

When I activated the sirens in Elmore with the weather warn software, the system failed to send data to the DTMF encoders, so I had to override the system.
Even though tornado sirens are a great resource… it’s really meant for people outdoors. Have multiple ways of getting alerts… for example: NOAA Weather Radio, Phones, weather apps, local media, etc. so when a tornado warning is issued, you still get an alert and you can take shelter! Every home, business & school should have a NOAA Weather Radio, the more weather radios out there in homes, businesses & schools… the more lives we can save
Agreed 💯 . It's not all that expensive to get apps n such for phones..I use a weather radar app for my storm spotter activities on top of NOAA weather radio on my scanner.

yep looks to be a model 5 (or 2) sadly they are getting replaced but my city still has one 2 miles from me :)

A growl is basically just turning it on for a second. Basically a very short test for repairs and stuff so the people nearby don't have to hear a loud siren blasting.

Newer sirens have a battery backup system, so in case the power system goes out, the batteries in the siren are able to power the siren itself.

They only activate them when testing them. Not when there's actually emergency. That wouldn't make sense. 😂
