Quick radio breakdown: The lower the frequency the longer the range, this is why you can hear certain navigation beacons half a world away. Higher frequencies are line of sight only and so can be blocked by a hill but are otherwise less susceptible to interference. I don't know what it is like in Russia but the airforce here has the ability to communicate across UHF frequencies unlike civilian aircraft. If the frequency band buttons have a deeper meaning I would guess it is this: left most button is intended for extremely long range communication so like calls for help, attack alerts, basically stuff you want everyone, everywhere to hear. The right most button would be the rebel military talking to each other over short range relative to the size of the map. The middle button would be both civilian and military.
I do wonder though how that functionally integrates. I can’t quite tell on my phone but it looks like these are all in the tens of MHz. There isn’t really a functional difference in range on radio emitters operating at the same power until you go an order of magnitude up or down on frequency.
You weren't kidding about how nice it is to find a hidden city. I can't wait to see when the Jaguar meets up with the Sevastopol and the planned fleet refit.
You're right that the format for the radio transmissions is receiver>message>sender. The receiver is often a ground base and they seem to have names related to various stones (sapphire, emerald, chalcedony, etc and they seem to cycle between the runs) and curiously enough one that's always present is Deneb, reference to one of the brightest stars in the sky. Still haven't been able to work out if they're just randomly selected every time they transmit or if the callsigns are assigned to actual stations. As you progress north I've also seen chatter between various military fleets become more common. The practical application is that recording the names of the various radio bases in each playthrough gives you a set of cypher keys to work with when decoding messages.
Haha yes, I need to get ready for decryption, it's a weak spot of mine I don't generally have the patience. That ks for the background, I have never made the link there!
I've just Binged watched all the episodes thus far, and while you're taken almost a dozen or so cities I can't make it past the shipbuilder! UGH! Love your gameplay by the way, and would love to see how you build and play your custom ships. Keep em coming! Also, learning so damn much from your videos! Once I get out of the Shipbuilder, I'll be a unstoppable. Its just I keep learning more things from your videos and then make adjustments to my ship designs from that knowledge.. One day I'll stop and commit to a campaign lol.
It's so hard to get out of the shipbuilder. I sat down to plan out my refits last night and never actually got anywhere because I ended up trying to build the 'best' Lightning style ship! Thanks for the kind words, I am really glad this is helping!
I found my first hidden city after a pretty botched attempt at taking out a strike group. It felt like a huge win after slogging through the aftermath of my failed attack. Virtual high five to ya for all the help
Wow, the fact that installing a component does not cost its price again is vital intel for the success of my ongoing campaign! I always thought that that was a stupid mechanic as it would be really prohibitive for in-campaign refitting. Thanks for that =)
I get exited whenever I see one of these videos in my sub feed. Really enjoy watching and the speedy uploads. Would be interested to see a custom built ship sometime, but from what I understand it just takes to long to do after picking ships at the start.
Thank you! I'm stuck in lockdown right now so I don't have much else to do after work :( I will be getting into ship refitting soon which is going to play a big part in the next phase of our campaign. During the campaign you can't actually build new ships from scratch. One of the reasons I bought the YARS was as a possible major refit ship as it was so cheap.
I am really glad you are enjoying this. My campaign 2 playthrough is a lot more audacious and put together than this one if you want to check it out too. Awesome that someone on Reddit gave you a recommendation!
@@Phrosphor gotta get through this one first. Am at the double varyag nuclear miss. God, the drama! Curious how itd play out with the latest update. Thanks for making this video, its been a blast joining you on the adventure!
Nice to get to finally watch this, and just what I wanted to see. The city really opens up a lot of options for you. You were so close in your first attempt to find that city. Nice that you found one, but since your quest log didn't update I don't think you found the one they were talking about. Now I'm curious to see how you refit your ships now that you have the time to do major refits. Considering you mentioned the "perfect lightning" in another comment I'm sure you have an idea of what you want. Also, a note on the name "Varyag". That was the name of the uncompleted Soviet aircraft carrier (that was inherited by Ukraine after the fall of the USSR) and later sold to the Chinese. The ship that currently has that name in the Russian Navy is a cruiser and is the flagship of the Russian Pacific Fleet.
Varyag has a special meaning in this game. You will see! I want to answer your post but don't have time just now. Keep an eye out for a bigger reply when I have more time.
Due to my severe skill issue in piloting, I scrapped my Lightning after like 6 strikes, then recruited a Tarkhan who has a Wasp. I then used the 2 ship's parts to build an armored flying egg of death, which has 4x 130mm guns and 2x 37mm, as well as 4 sprint missiles and FCS for anti-cruise missiles. Pretty fun experience I would say.

I've not yet dipped my toes into ship building. I'm looking forward to seeing how you handle your modifications. You're right, though, that upgrade on the lightnings is pretty great.
Lots of planning before major changes that's for sure. I have built plenty from scratch, it's very satisfying but I need cost effective refits that make sense and that is going to be tougher. Thank goodness we have the hidden city to complete them in.
How does that even work? Do you have to operate your ship in a certain way or do you just fly over a city and it shows up as "hidden people" automatically?
I know its a year late (I just picked this game up this week), but when buying ammo, like at 15:15, the slider starts at 7 and its raised to 31. Does this mean you're buying 31 or only 24 with 7 already in your inventory?
Hey man maybe you can help . I just got the game. It’s a lot at first . So I’m looking for a hidden city which I think i found. Little brown boxes just like in your video here , but for me no circle is around them and when I land on top nothing happens. Any help is appreciated. Thx 🙏🏼

Yeah this is how I come down on it later in the campaign as well! Excellent write-up though!
Thank you

Got lots of plans, tempted to do a stream or bonus video where I work out my refits in the ship builder outside of the normal campaign.

Are there multiple hidden cities or just the one? Also, there were a bunch of supersonic fighters in Haran.
multiple hidden cities atleast in my playthroughs.
26:36 you can see on the map that he has discovered a city, but his questlog has another city that he hasn't located yet.
Nice catch! I need to find the other one.

Excellent content thx
Glad you think so! Thank you so much.
Will you do the playthrough with custom ships on hard mode?
I can try, it depends what the patch does to ship building rules. It looks like a lot of stuff isn't going to be possible so it will get a Lot harder.
What does the screen going dark mean while in the map? It seems to be centred around the radio phone thing
I believe it is related to a UI update setting that I keep trigging by trying to zoom in to far!
Yeah I'll have to start refitting my lightnings with 130 mm as well.
It makes a huge difference, though I am sticking with 100mm on my interceptors in my hardmode campaign and they are still performing strongly.
Could you put the videos into a playlist? I have to search the parts via lookinglass since youtube doesn't order them together

22:24 A huge blunder. You said yourself that you'd only get a +1 from him already having enjoyed it.
Yeah the Tarkhan mini-game is one of my weakest points.
@@Phrosphor It's honestly the one part of the game that's too hard.
isn't the Varyag basically your capital ship but a bit smaller?
Shhh, spoilers! (Yes, it's also very scary for our fleet to deal with)

I'm in Australia, we have had some pretty tough lockdowns here.

It's crazy how much they nerfed aircrafts, I don't know how else to deal with them now
How long for the next next video buddy?
It's recorded and just finishing editing :)
so much science I love this, also are the names just coming from people in the comments?
Names are from comments and a forum thread I was running this from at the time.

Use your ground radar!
Noooo, we just attacked a strike fleet and there is a missile group in the area. Turning on radar right now will give away our location!
