Unlike the "arranged" marriages in the past (in China & India?) where the sons and daughters had no say, these are matchmaking gatherings aimed at marriage, but the children do have a say. So, it's not just casual dating.
Yes. Some parents are eager to accelerate their children’s marriage under the peer pressure and they think they can find more “qualified “ bf or gf. So they go out to seek the proper person they think and introduce to their children for dating.
Actually that park shows a negative part of Chinese culture. Some parents hope their children have their "class"-matching partners. The height, body weight, looking, education background, Shanghai household identity and most importantly, income or wealthiness of their original families.
you r right! "xiangqing" is a kind of arranged dating, like "son, I have just known a wonderful girl today, do you want her contact to chat with her", something like that.
Great video. Lived in Shanghai from 2004 to 2015, thought you captured the essence of the city really well. I guess I lived through quite a lot of the changes and development and worked in pudong as the big buildings went up. When I arrived only the jinmao tower was there of the big three and there were only three metro lines! I'm sure in the three years I've been away its changed massively again. A city that never stops or never sleeps.
3 metro lines? Woah when I went to Shanghai last year on a school trip we always used the metro because you could get literally anywhere, for the week I was there we used buses once. Must’ve been a really interesting time to be there to see everything develop before your eyes.
@@sniper.93c14 to be fair the 3 metro lines was only for the first couple of years...then it seemed like every 12 to 18 months another line came into operation. Plus....Volkswagen Santana taxis were everywhere....plentiful and cheap. Though the drivers were so overworked...everyone I know had been involved in some sort of minor traffic accident while travelling by taxi...and not uncommon to see the poor drivers falling asleep at wheel. Guess that's different now too....I left just as Chinese Uber had begun to take off
Matthew Eaves I see that makes sense it was like that in Nanjing where I spent a lot of my time in China. When my sister was there 18 months before there weren’t nearly as many metro lines. By the time I got there there was one building just down the road from our schools campus, and a few other lines that had been competed so there were much more options for public transport
Like your video. Just a minor correction on the "arranged marriage" thing so that people may not get the wrong impression. What occurs in the people square park is more like parents act as match makers for their children. Whether things eventually work out or not still depends on their children's willingness to start from there.
I am an international student of Uni Melbourne and Shanghai is my hometown. I reckon your Chinese is better than my English. I really appreciate your passion in Chinese culture and you deserve more subscribers.
I was born in Shanghai but been living abroad for over 20 years. Even tho I do go back to Shanghai every year, but you certainly know more than I do. And love to hear things from your perspective and it’s fun! Thank you!
I came back 2 years ago from an year abroad in China with AFS.I miss China so much and every time I see videos like this I feel soo weird and nostalgic💔
I was born in Shanghai in 1991 and live here until now. I see how things changing better and I remember what it used to be. I like the modern life and I miss some traditional staffs. I think the ‘contrast’ is the best the word to describe this city, and that is why I like this city so much! It feels like everything, every possibility can happen here. When introducing Shanghai, most people prefer to describe how beautiful how fancy how modern it is. But I really prefer your way. It is the mix that I love this city so much.
What I love about your video is that you really appreciate the cultural nuances. Deeply insightful. There are lots of fun “life in China” videos out there but yours show more social and historical understanding. Amazing work!
Shanghai has became my third favorite city in the world after new york and singapore. As a road runner, i’ve explored many parts of shanghai on foot and there are a lot of interesting place. As yuppie, there are a lot of cool hangout place and doing staycation in the city is very affordable compared to same level of hotel in NYC or SIN or HKG or LON. For example, park hyatt shanghai, second highest hotel in the world only costs $200ish per night compared to park hyatt new york/syd/tokyo which usually starts at $700-800ish. Same with MO or Peninsula or Waldorf Astoria. Those are my top 3 hotels in SH. Aman properties are tad bid cheaper but not much difference compared to other places. But you can save so much in food by eating in local restaurant. That’s what’s great about SH the contrast is very interesting.
I was born in Shanghai and moved away when I was a kid, and then I went back for university for a couple years. This vid definitely makes me nostalgic for my home away from home that is my actual home.
I lived in Shanghai for 3 years and only came back to the UK because of the pandemic and constantly cancelled flights. This made me really miss it there!
I will be going to Shanghai next year and I am super excited to go. watching your videos make me want to go right now and I am so glad I came across your channel. I’m trying to learn chinese and honestly I strive to be like you. Thank you so much for literally everything
awww thanks for this beautiful comment! I'm so glad that these videos are making you excited for China! You're gonna have the most amazing time in Shanghai :)
Blondie in China I do have a question though. I was fortunate enough to come across your learning chinese video and unfortunately I dont have the opportunity to learn chinese in a classroom setting, I just recently ordered a course book that includes 3 books, online courses, and audio practices as well. Do you think that would be enough or is there anything else you would recommend?
I've seen you many times in Raz's videos and China related videos. So it's a pleasant surprise to come across your own channel. Keep up the good work! :D
Your videos really inspire me to learn more chinese! China is too huge and beautiful and Of course I want to learn more of this beautiful language. Your Channel deserves more suscribers! could you also tell us how you learnt chinese?
I‘m suprised you can understand China along with it's inner culture a lot in a right and deep way. First time I find a foreigner like this. Why? i'm not sure but i believe one of the main reason is you are a proper, mental healthy, well educated and smart person.
I want to learn Chinese so badly and visit China!!!!! I deal with Chinese tourists everyday at work so I’ve picked up a few phrases here and there (which always surprises them! 😂) and they are so encouraging too! Haha
Great video, Amy! Just a gentle reminder: please make sure to not show any personal details (i.e. the telephone no. appeared in the dating ads in the People's Park) on your video.
about the marriage market, i suddenly realized that how straightforward Chinese can be. here is my background, i own such such things. and here is what i am looking fo. simple and easy.
it seems simple but that cause many ladies unable to married. lol... the one she show... she is doctorate, have apartment, have job, so... to be her counterpart you reliaze how hard it was... another maybe the parent input some requirement like certain wages, or have own homes/flat.
The weird food you talk about in Family Mart is Japanese Oden, similar as hot pot. It's interesting that you think smell and sound of Shanghai lies there, because I think that's the Japanese smell and sound in Shanghai. I also love exploring Japanese snacks and ice creams from there.
It can also have a *different meaning in other Asian languages:* in *Vietnamese, "碩士"* is rendered "thạc sĩ" , where it *only describes a "Master's degree" in the European tradition* , and is actually *only equivalent to a 4th-year Bachelor's degree* , what English-speaking universities often call an "honour's degree". Otherwise, a genuine Master's (post-Bachelor graduate) degree is actually called "Bằng cấp cao học" (凭給高学).
Such a fascinating and exhilarating video that makes me miss everything back in Shanghai! However, there was one little typo in the video haha. “硕士” means “Master’s” but not “Doctorate”.
Blondie in China No problem haha! I absolutely love the videos that you have made, and I hope you can continuously explore different cultures and activities in China!!!
I was born in shanghai and came to Aus last year, i thought you missed one thing in Shanghai is XiaoLong Bao! by the way, Love your video soooo much. i have been watching your videoes over 2 hours, can't stop, hahaha. you deserves more subscribers!
Don't worry, after living in Shanghai for a year, I know all about 小笼包!I gained many kilos because of them hahahha. I'm so glad you like my videos!! I'm loving reading all your happy comments!!!!
love your video, girl. some traditions may go as society develops, some may not. The Chinese are the people that value their family the most. They do a lot things for their families that people in many places around the world won't. As the partner looking advertisement may seem to be more realistic that romantic, they are more about the parents' care for their kids and the hope of their kids' happy lives. Some day it may appear in a different form, however, it's likely that it will never go away. Keep up the good videos.
呵呵 When you said rich and POOR, 1:02 you picked the wrong lady. SHE is not a street beggar. She is a mother putting Ads for her son/daughter, looking for her future daughter/son in law. Maybe she is a SUPER rich local who owns a couple of real estates worth of millions of dollars.😂
Haha when I was a kid, I dropped by at a 7-11style shop after going swimming with my friend. While we were waiting in line to pay for our drinks, I was staring at the extremely high prices of some weird packages similar to chewing gums. And naive as I was, I immediately spoke out my doubt to my friend, asking what kind of brand of chewing gum could possibly cost so much. The moment I finally figured out what it was, I rushed out of the shop immediately bursting into laughter :D on the shelf were various brands of condoms.
Amy: *mentions FamilyMart has a particular smell* Me: *has been to multiple FamilyMarts in Asia* Me: * *Gasps* * SHE'S RIGHT WHAT THE HELL WHY DID I NEVER NOTICE?!
that dating market is not necessarily about arranging marriages. For what i know is more about arranging dates perhaps?

most of them are for 30+ for ppl who worked too hard didn't have time to find a partner

I really feel like the people in Shanghai are very friendly & sociable lol
Everytime the camera gets people they are like showing peace/hello sign😂

Thanks for the tip! I never thought the parents would force children to marry, but it definitely is a match making service!
