Hi Gina! I have to say I have never seen your hair styled this way and you look adorable! Ohhh, I have one that annoys me when I order a book and the cover arrives damaged - Silly, but true - Rrrrr.😠
Omg I hate that too. And so often the packaging is just so awful, they aren’t even careful at all.
Thanks for the hair compliment! I’m trying to grow it a bit.
My Copy of the Count of Monte Cristo came from Amazon with a Sharpie mark on the cover. It's only about an inch long, but I bought the pretty clothbound edition for a reason.
I Understand, 100%@@kimbarbeaureads
My tongue will tell the anger of my heart, or else my heart concealing it will break. Shakespeare.
I love buying used books, especially at library book sales, but I once reached the end of one of these books only to discover that the last page was missing!🤬 Who would do something so evil?!?
Omg! That is awful!
You’re voice is so soothing to listen to. 🩵
Thank you so much. What a nice thing to say. (I've never liked the sound of my voice LOL)
I felt the same way about Nothing else but Miracles. It just didn’t live up to my expectations. Enjoyed your answers!
Aw, sweet kitty! I think those Persphone editions are classic and lovely. I've never heard of people setting up at thrift stores to find stuff to sell on eBay--so rude! I can't help but think of the person who wouldn't be able to afford that thing otherwise and who misses out because somebody snagged it to make a profit. I have more thoughts on your thoughts, but can't give it away because I need to say in my video! Thanks for tagging me, Gina!
Thanks Priscilla! It's a fun tag.
People going shelf by shelf and checking what they can sell them for definitely counts. SO annoying! You do get annoyed by stickers! 💛
Omg yes, stickers!!!!!
@@GinaStanyerBookssame!!! 😅 thrift books is the worst. They always put one on but ive found if the book is really cold from outside, the sticker will come off without damage!
The growout is looking cUte!!🥰
I need to edit mine but we answered similarly 😂
Thanks Deea!
Oh the first one... i so understand that! But i also do understand what makes it that they don't line up, and that it, because they seem to put the logo in the middle of both of the writing. And as you can see on one book the writing is longer, because that name is longer, so the middle of that white space is somewhere different than on the other book.
If they did line up, the logo on the fair miss fortune book would have be a longer white space above the logo than below.
Gina, what a masterclass in why book design is so important. You very clearly showed the difficulty in reading when the gutter is narrow and the outside page margins small too.
It's like the designer has never actually read a book before LOL
@@GinaStanyerBooks or someone higher up the book food chain is trying to save money on paper.
Thank you for doing the tag!
I am 100% with you about the books facing backwards on the shelf. I mean, why? What is the point?
When the back of the book just has blurps telling me the book is great, but not what it is about. And yes, spoilers on the back, especially in classics. Why assume I've read them already?
Oh, and typos
OMG yes typos!! So annoying (and very prevalent, especially in ebooks)
Your hair is so stinking cute! Also, spoilers drive me absolute bonkers. I've read so many books where the authors literally spoil books while talking about how people haye spoilers... like, what?! Why would you do that to a fellow reader?! 😧
Awwww, thanks so much Rachel! Yeah, spoilers are so annoying.
The foreword in the book We Have Always Lived In the Castle had a huge spoiler in it. I have never been so annoyed with a book in my life. I lived the story too so it made me extra angry. No more forewords for me.
I generally don’t like looking at a bunch of spines with words shouting out at me. But for that, something like the example of two that you showed would really annoy me. And yes, those two others were much better!
I agree David. I think that's one of the reasons that I love the Persephone editions so much.
You should write a letter to the publisher about the uneven spine. You may be surprise, they may listen.
I like short story collections, but sometimes a publisher neglects to put the title of the story in the page headings, making it hard to locate a particular story. I find that annoying.
That would be annoying!
Such a fun tag! I love that you organize your shelves how you like it and not in a specific order. I agree with you on authors having to sell character’s choices.
Thanks Kaitlin! It works for me :)
So true with the annoying Amazon scanners who tend to be incredibly rude!!!
Right? They just sit there and block the entire shelf.
When you showed the backwards (spine in) moment I became flustered. I did that recently to have visual track of the books I've read and the books I need to read. Your discussing it has reminded me I need to flip them outwards again...
That's a great idea for tracking your TBR!
I'm reading Lonesome Dove at the moment. I have a nice old Pan edition in good condition except there were four pages of very faint print which I couldn't read. So annoying!
Oh ugh!!!! That is annoying!
❤🐱 I always enjoy seeing them in videos.
Such fun questions. Thanks for tagging me.
I have 5 cats right now (including the one foster). They are EVERYWHERE!
@@GinaStanyerBooks I have 4. One is a kitten and she seems like she’s going everywhere at full speed.
Gina! Gina! Gina! I kept hoping you would be on soon!! I just had to tell you I finished Winter Solstice!!!😁😁😁😀😀😀 Oh my gosh! SOOOO GOOD! I believe 2 wks. ago, in the hotel. I am SO HAPPY you talked about it as often as you did. That is a keeper, one I will re-read. My neighbor across the hall is borrowing it now! I kept telling "my daughter" who is another avid reader about it and kept saying, " you HAVE to read this"; she also heard about it on a book podcast called " Modern Mrs. Darcy" fairly recently. So now she will read it! 😊 I asked my neighbor to PLEASE leave ALL the story arrows in. I had soooo many quotes I loved. The descriptions of the land, the skies, the characters ( chapter titles, super!); it was soooo well written. I loved Lucy's character and her relationship w/ Oscar. I could just go on and on. If you had never mentioned that book, I would never have read it and MISSED one of the greatest bks. ever written! Thank you so much! It is going on my " favorites, NEVER to be given away" shelf. 😊 To think I only paid 25¢ for it, in very good condition at a library! By the way, I really like your hair tonight. Are you letting it grow? The book I just started is" The Bee & The Fly The Improbable Correspondence of Louisa May Alcott & Emily Dickinson. Have been back in apt. 1 1/2 wks aesthetically beautiful; brighter, happier; but a ton of work putting everything back where it belongs. I will take my time, because the whole thing up til now took way too much out of me. Thankfully, not one boom was damaged, I packed them ALL myself 😊 as I did my teapots, teacups and saucers, dessert plates. ( was supposed to say BOOK, not boom ). YEAH for GINA!!
Oh yay! I'm so glad you loved it. I totally agree. I plan to read it every Christmas, it is so cozy - I loved the ending but I was wishing for a Christmas presents opening scene!
Nice to hear you are back home. Do take care of yourself and don't work to hard! What a ton of work already to pack everything up.
Yes, I'm letting my hair grow! Thanks for noticing :)
Horrid looking covers, Wordsworth books used to do beautiful covers but now they are in a uniform navy blue with unbelievably dreadful and cheap looking covers. They are meant to be affordable editions of classics but I just don't get why they changed. Their hardbacks are nice looking though 😅. I managed to replace their edition of North and South with a lovely vintage Everyman's library copy! Before I forget, should I read September or Coming Home first?
I agree about those horrid covers!
I love September! It’s one of my favorites. I really love the old lady main character. I liked Coming Home too, but it is more a coming of age story, which I don’t love quite as much.
I love dean street press books I’ve collected many over the years . tragically the early death of the wonderful Rupert Heath - the founder behind Dean Street Press mean they will no longer publish any more of these books. Which is very sad 😔
Oh no, I heard about his death but was hoping they'd keep the presses running. That bums me out!
Your haircut is super cute!
Thanks! Lol it’s been 9 days since this comment and I’ve already chopped it. I get really bored with it really fast.
How fun! Thanks for the shout-out and for tagging me! 🫶🏽 I'm looking forward to doing this tag 🙂
It's a lot of complainey-pants fun!
Dislike spoilers of any kind! I don’t even watch film trailers when I know I want to see it anyway. I just want to be delighted by the discoveries.
Exactly!
I have all the Dean street press Susan Scarlett books and one is about 2cms higher than the others. So annoying.
So annoying!!!
I also loved Fingersmith. I also thought the tv series was pretty good.
I haven't watched that yet!
I get annoyed when publishers add extra chapters to book sold in various corporate bookstores. Especially if they make deals with several corporate bookshops with several different chapters.
I saw one reader that turned book spines in when they finished a book. They could tell how many TBRs they have with just a glance.
That sounds like an interesting tactic to visualize your TBR. Sort of like flipping around your hangers to see which clothes you are wearing.
Not an annoyance but a question: Do you keep all of your books that are part of a collection together? Like your Persephones and your Dean Street Presses. What if you have other books by the authors but not part of the same published collection?
I do keep them all together (for the most part). For instance, the DE Stevensons that I showed today are right next to my vintage Stevenson hardbacks. That's one reason why I can't keep the color coding!
As a self published author I can tell you if the DSP books were print on demand it wouldn’t matter. The publisher would send a pdf for the cover so it really is their fault for the mismatched logos.
Oh that’s interesting Courtney. I don’t know anything about self publishing on Amazon.
Hi Gina. Is there some way to mail books to you? I have at least one I'd like to send you.
Hi Gina….it annoys me to see books with their spines turned around. No true book lover would do that unless they were embarrassed of the title. I just finished reading The Cat’s Guide to England by Pat Albeck and what a delight. I immediately thought of you. You would love it. A cozy little book with beautiful artwork and a cute narrative by the cat. Check it out.
Thanks for the recommendation. I just bought it on Thrift books!!!
It might be kind of fun to have all your TBR's turned backwards and then choose your next read at random!
I find it really annoying when the publisher prints the author and title on the spine running from bottom to top instead of top to bottom. This means having to turn your head completely the other way round when looking at the books on a shelf and spoils the look of the shelf as well.
Where were those bottom to top books that you found published? The top to bottom spines aren't standard everywhere.
