I'm going through this with my Mazda B3000 3.0. Pretty much the same symptoms! But the coolant didn't look as bad. Looked more rusty than milky. And I block tested it too. Man, thank you thank you thank you!! The only difference between this one and the issues mine is having, is no milk shake! So probably a bad h20 pump in my case, thank goodness!!
My 2000 Exploder Eddie Bauer edition has over 311k miles😀 However I know I didn't blow a head gasket, no mass moisture coming out of t-pipe nor is there any chocolate milk anywhere on the oil stick. I put a new thermostat in (180*) and it still gets way too hot too fast, also I am getting the bubbles in the coolant resivouir. Please help, feedback welcomed.😀👍
Bubbles in coolant resivior most likely mean the head gasket is blown, if u leave the cap off and give it gas and water gushes out its definetly blown.
1st indication was loss of heat is the result of combustion gases getting in the cooling system and no coolant flow due to air pockets. 2nd indication was coolant tank was low in AM and then raise above level, 3rd was the temp gauge indications along with the heater working intermittently & the dead giveaway was the color of the coolant (oil contamination) and failing the test for combustion gases in the coolant. Good troubleshooting Ivan!! Did the oil on the dipstick look like a milkshake also?
That is a good sign. Good luck either tearing it down or changing engines whichever is more economically feasible and passes the logic test...looking forward to the Part 2.
Ivan do you have a 5 gas analyzer? I picked up a used otc microgas on ebay for a few hundred that needed o2 sensor. I bought o2 sensor for a $100 and have been using it like scannerdanner shows to read over 100 ppm HC in coolant reservoir to look for early head gasket failures. Seems to work like a charm in the cases I've used it for. Thumbs up on video as always sir!
Oil can also get in from radiator , but the block test , pretty much shows a internal engine leak . Head gasket or a crack , If they want to fix it right that is good , but if not wanting to , then may try some BlueDevil,
I've seen a head gasket go the same way on a 1995 Vauxhall (what GM go by in the UK) Vectra. 145k. Weird behaviour with the temperature gauge, the coolant started to stink of petrol and had a film in it. Although the compression which was tested by a garage didn't really seem off for the age of the engine. Not a typical presentation. It was on its way to be made into beer cans 15 minutes later. lol Not sure if its worth the labour to do the head. Maybe a low mileage engine from a scrap would be border line cost effective. Glad to see you back. I was wondering if Eric had you chained up in his shop knocking out the repairs while he put his feet up. lololol
Replace thermostat. Done. Get off the head gasket kick, you could have pulled the dipstick and checked for chocolate milk when oil mixes with coolant. Saved a ton of time, top the thing off with a good strong mix and go in and get warm.
Great video. i like the way you do things live on camera. Anyways i once had a similar problem on on Mercedes ML320 and it ended being ATF that made its way into the cooling system via the ATF cooler in the Radiator. Great video come the coming

Not giving up on the loose pump impeller theory so easy. I didn't see where you stuck a screw driver into the fins of it and then tried to turn it, huh? Yeah, and if you did and the pulley spun then it's both problems. Air pocket around the impeller about the only thing giving those same loose impeller symptoms, but hard to get on board and buy it. Nice one again Ivan.
Same thing happened to me. Any overheating issues the driver should speed up,,,catch clean air,,,AND turn the heater on full blast. I noticed my radiator res cap pop off twice.....btw,,i have four ASEs
did you remove the oil cap and see it from the inside? if not show it in part 2 or 3 as im pretty sure that will show that the head gasket is blown. and that 4.0 is easy to work on a head gasket job is not a huge expense if the truck was worth putting on new tires right?
+K Oil cap and dipstick were surprisingly clean. I think in this case it was still in the early stages of head gasket failure, where the coolant didn't leak into the cylinders or crankcase yet...
+motoYam82 i noticed that when it was overheating there was no pressure on the upper radiator pipe i think the problem started with a Bad cooling system either the cooling fans are junk or the radiator is partially blocked or the water pump is actually bad ... and dont forget the cap im very interested for an engine tear-down and a compression test before that because i DO BELIEVE that the head gasket is intact and there is a crack somewhere
+motoYam82 My Chevy s10 had a blown head when I bought it,,, but the engine was pristine, the oil was 100% clean. I only noticed oil in the coolant. Did the chemical test and it passed. Still decided to open the engine and it turned out the head was cracked. Sometimes the oil pressure pushes the oil out instead of letting coolant in. That's why this diagnosis is so tricky and you have to think it twice before calling a blown head gasket.

Sounds like a bad ground. Heater circuit is loading a common ground too much and other things are shutting off. Does the heater work fine with key on engine off?
I got the same thing going on but it’s my oil gauge when the light for check gauges on my oil gauge is all the way down to low but if you push on the gas the check gauge light goes out in the oil temperature gage goes back to normal. If anybody has any suggestions please feel free to make a comment I have a 2003 Ford explore
I've used with success I forgot the name it's like $60 a bottle and it's blue and seals leaky head gaskets. I've fixed 3 vehicles with it one took two bottles. They all ran fine and I sold them and they still run fine. I was always very uncertain as I don't like sealers or additives that don't fix the issue without causing other problems.
So many diagnostic steps where missed. take the thermestate out, at least inspect it before even looking into the (impeller) if you undeder stand a waterpump, you thought it was an instrement problem issue. yes you got a blast of heat because the thermastate opened. Bubbles in coolant resivior most likely mean the head gasket is blown, if u leave the cap off and give it gas and water gushes out its definetly blown.
Did you ever fix it ? If so what was the problem and solution ?? Help please
+Robert Hayward Nope oil was clean!
That is a good sign. Good luck either tearing it down or changing engines whichever is more economically feasible and passes the logic test...looking forward to the Part 2.
хорошо снимаешь, уверено держишься перед камерой, интересные неисправности и их диагностика. получаю enjoy от просмотра. Так держать.
So what would a "part 2" entail? Watching this Exploder get loaded onto a flatbed and hauled away?
@pinehollowautodiagnostics would a coolant pressure test show bad gasket in this case ?
Ivan do you have a 5 gas analyzer? I picked up a used otc microgas on ebay for a few hundred that needed o2 sensor. I bought o2 sensor for a $100 and have been using it like scannerdanner shows to read over 100 ppm HC in coolant reservoir to look for early head gasket failures. Seems to work like a charm in the cases I've used it for. Thumbs up on video as always sir!
What did the owner do?
Oil can also get in from radiator , but the block test , pretty much shows a internal engine leak . Head gasket or a crack , If they want to fix it right that is good , but if not wanting to , then may try some BlueDevil,
+wtbm123 What about this stuff?
www.steelseal.com/product/steel-seal/
+motoYam82 Well it too has a money back guarantee , So what could possibly go wrong . lol
If the head was not cracked or warped it is now after you let it over heat so many times like that !
I'm afraid we'll never know for sure... maybe that's for the better!
Can a transmission is over heating on a 2001 ford explore make your truck not run
What exactly caused the vehicle to overheat and gave you milkshake coolant fella ???
I would have checked the air pressure in the tires first
Jordan Scheurer 😂
lol
Why not check the blinker fluid first?
Думаю есть смысл смотреть поток обратки в бачек (тонкий шланг)
при перегазовке должна идти жидкость (излишки)
Same thing happened to me when I had a Thunderbird with a 3.8. blown head gasket.
+Justa Hondafan HAY!!! That MY picture! lol
+Justa Hondafan HAY!!! That MY picture! lol
It was on its way to be made into beer cans 15 minutes later. lol
Not sure if its worth the labour to do the head.
First change the themostat, could be sticking. Then go after the water pump.
I have a 2005 Ford Explorer has a rough idle but the engine light is not on or has any obd 2 codes. Did a recent tune up on the engine. Can you please help and direct me in the right direction.
Look at Mode 6 OBD2 data, maybe the misfire counters are picking up some misfires but not enough to turn on the check engine light.
JakesRCboats it could have a spark plug that was over tightened and cracked the porcelain on it if it just had a tune up, trust me i have done it myself and had the same proble
I had a 97 Explorer did the same thing. And water was leaking from the water pump.
What about the trans cooler leaking into the cooling system; if it's integrated into the radiator?
+rusco321 I was thinking the same. Ive seen Fords and other makes do this here in New Zealand because of a leaking trans cooler.
So you need a “Check gauge” lamp to remind you to look at the gauges? That’s ‘Merican made 😁
Same thing happened to me. Any overheating issues the driver should speed up,,,catch clean air,,,AND turn the heater on full blast. I noticed my radiator res cap pop off twice.....btw,,i have four ASEs
Did not see any rust new tires if its all right i would look for a junkyard motor If the owner thinks its worth some more money?
Is that your personal experience cause a few kinks and diy and all my problems where gone .
kinks and diy?
Red light comes on, temperature maxes out, heater stops working. Its good let's keep going!!!
water in oil if gasket, right?? stuck thermo
What about the thermostat being bad?
I have same issue problem housing leaking and replace same problem replace fuel pum and works now nice and have more power.
did you remove the oil cap and see it from the inside? if not show it in part 2 or 3 as im pretty sure that will show that the head gasket is blown. and that 4.0 is easy to work on a head gasket job is not a huge expense if the truck was worth putting on new tires right?
+motoYam82 Where did you get that test kit from and what brand is it?
+motoYam82 My Chevy s10 had a blown head when I bought it,,, but the engine was pristine, the oil was 100% clean. I only noticed oil in the coolant. Did the chemical test and it passed. Still decided to open the engine and it turned out the head was cracked. Sometimes the oil pressure pushes the oil out instead of letting coolant in. That's why this diagnosis is so tricky and you have to think it twice before calling a blown head gasket.
busjockey1
Just the basic kit from NAPA...
I have replaced my waterpump, thermostat, bottom radiator hose and my car keeps overheating one day then find two days later..all fluids came out so I replaced fluid and tightened everything but now I hear a boiling noise 🤦🏾♀️idk what to do now and I’m relocating from Cali to Az 8/27 which is in 5 days..someone anyone anybody please help me
I kinda think my head gasket could be it but not sure..someone please help me
Clean your lens and get a anti glare filter. Great video
thermostat sounds bad to me
Bradley Micheal thats exactly what i was thinking with a bad thermostat u can see coolant bubbling and spilling out of reservoir
It's NOT the thermostat! A faulty thermostat ould NOT cause a lack of circulation through the heater core!
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics
Bradley Micheal agreed a intermittent overheat than all of a sudden not looking at WP or thermostat getting stuck
My 03 explorer was doing the same thing replace the thermostat and im still driving it good luck to the costumer they got ripped
I need help for my car I have 2002Ford explorer and I start the car and then I put heater on and car die and then I turn off heater and start again it's start and then again I put heater it's off so please let me know how to fix that
Nisa Look can you rewrite your question in english
You know next time you try being sarcastic, can you please consider that a lot of people (the majority of the world, in fact) do not speak English? I think this was a mighty good attempt.
Sounds like a bad ground. Heater circuit is loading a common ground too much and other things are shutting off. Does the heater work fine with key on engine off?
I replace water pump thermostat and is still overheating any suggestions people
I got the same thing going on but it’s my oil gauge when the light for check gauges on my oil gauge is all the way down to low but if you push on the gas the check gauge light goes out in the oil temperature gage goes back to normal. If anybody has any suggestions please feel free to make a comment I have a 2003 Ford explore
Check your oil pressure with a manual gauge 👍
Scotty to the rescue , two cans of stop leak LOL I hope Pauls watching , Ivan he never has luck with them kits and yours was definitive . 👍👍
+Steve Rob Scotty will tell you it's easy and there's no need to pay someone thousands to do it, and have it all done in one 3 minute video...
+mrman17 HaHa your so right 😂
+Steve Rob hey Steve Happy New Year! Actually in this case stop leak may have been a wise decision...you will see why in Part 2 :)
motoYam82 Same to you Buddy, anybody ever tell you your vids are awesome !!
looks likes a nice truck still, hope the owner ops for a repair. will be fun to watch.
+EZRider1979 Oh yeah the body and paint look like a million bucks!
hey there Ivan wat up....maybe u shud try the BARS LEAK additive, wat u think about that?.....just a thought haha....keep up the great vids..
Did her car shut itself down or anything
pedal to floor = no start?
+Poebat yep
Poebat It only works on the Explorers.
Poebat anti flood mode
that Autel MaxiDas 708
what's your review/experience that you can share?
thanks!
The Ford Exploder. I think The Car Doctor on RUclips has trademark on that name.
Im fairly sure RUclips wasn't even around in the 90s.
If the head gasket wasn't blown when you started I'm sure it was when you let it keep running after it overheated
So many diagnostic steps where missed. take the thermestate out, at least inspect it before even looking into the (impeller) if you undeder stand a waterpump, you thought it was an instrement problem issue. yes you got a blast of heat because the thermastate opened. I surely hope you didn't stick a head gasket bill with this costomer before doing the correct diagnostic steps. f...man DUDE YOU DON"T ALWAY HAVE FLOW through the heater core, untill the thermastate opens come on man. what pudding are you talking about. your going "give them the bad news" dude , how bout bleed down, compression test. proof is in the pudding , man sorry but relisen to your broadcast and learn.
Thermostat valve is dying or it have blown already. The engine block head gasket it going to crapping out soon.I’m watching this video to the end to see what happened.
I was right the engine head gasket on this engine is blown.
I was waiting for u guys, either you or eric to do a video on an explorer ,I have 2002 explorer, they are the same generation 2002-2005
+STEEVE DAVID Nicolas Then this series will not disappoint you :)
+motoYam82 thanks, especially,if u gonna do a head gasket,my engine is running good for now,but it is high mileage so I might be doing a timing chain guide,I might as well do.the head gasket,ut video will be really helpful
it over heated too many times and blown the head gasket i've seen it and know about that
hey ivan i though you working full time with eric o?or that was a side job?any way greatly video..just waiting for part 2...
I put new radiator ,water pump thermostat, plastic thermostat housing (going strong 18 years)
My heater hose has a T connector that’s plastic and it broke and my Temp gauge wasn’t marking correctly. It was marking normal but I noticed it was taking awhile to get warm. Well I drove it before knowing any of my problems and it died on me.. then I noticed all the problems.. so I filled it up with water the following day and it doesn’t start. But it had pressure and smelt some sort of fuel too when it was cold.. any answers to what’s going on
Damn, that didn't take very long for that compression tester to turn yellow.
My 03 thermostat went bad and destroyed my my housing. However it was a quick and easy fix. Wasn't fluctuating and temps either lol. Weird. My 03 was flooded in a hurricane and went two years before I decided to get weird of it
+Adam Baber Yes there is a big variety of ways that these explode. Some are cheaper to fix that others.
Apart from the extra expense on the head job, you need to diagnose the reason why it blew up the gasket and repair that too... clogged radiator, faulty thermostat or defective water pump... It'll be a huge bill,,,,,,, I just hope the customer has agreed to a full repair so we can watch it from here,,,,,
Now, you wouldn't be posting a 2 series video with no ending,,,, would you? That'd be mean!! We want to see a happy ending.
That water looking like chocolate milk means blown head gaskets. Your done with that truck right then. Seen that one on all vehicles. If you open the oil cap it will be there too.
Hello, Hello, Yes this is Ivan the guy working on your truck, Got Good News and some Bad news.
Good News is your tires look great, Bad News is the Est to repair your engine, So 4,500 should cover the whole job.
Happy New Year....Click
Maybe she added oil to the coolant bottle, or coolant into the Oil fill cap. It does get confusing some times.
Heard the plugs on those things are a snap to change.
What happened to the take a drop or 2 of the coolant and drip it onto a heated up frying pan, if it smokes it got oil in it, or just steam, its only coolant, no oil. They should of included a PID, from the factory. But Noooooo.
Believe its to the junk yard for that old beast.
Or trade it in Quick, leave no paper trail, run as fast as you can, change your name, and move to another state.
What oil in the coolant ! No Way...Ran good when I owned it :) Gotta Go, Good Luck.
+Charles Miller Haha Charles that pretty much sums up the situation here:)
The coolant on the thermostat looked like extra light coffee haha. That test was so definitive and you used one of Scotty's tricks! :)
+Jon Rushing Which trick was that Jon?
The testing for a blown head gasket. As Scotty would say (in his car questions videos), "see my video,"how to tell if your head gasket is blown"" haha
engine swap for a head gasket?
+airframe67 If it turns out to be a cracked head/block, and not just the head gasket, etc.
When this happens alsways first check that the fan/fans come on......
Please dont always jump to the worst case scenario.
Often the radiator and its tiny tubes gets a slight clog.
Car complaints.com list the Explorer as the most complained about vehicle. This will be interesting. My brother had this happen to his 2001 and it cost him a total engine rebuild.
+wyattoneable Yeah I did a Google search on the Explorer common faults...made my head hurt lol
Bad thermostat for sure one of the problems. It went off way over temp.
O circulation is probably stuck thermostat.
Nice diagnostic Ivan. How come the coffee color coolant doesn't show up in the expansion tank?
+David Goldberg Great question. I guess oil floats to the top, and the top-most point in this system is at the thermostat housing...
bach flush heater core check for circulation
Man this is one interesting video
Time for the Scotty Kilmer "steel seal" treatment :-)
My 03 explorer did the same thing replace the thermostat it works just fine
Mine did to. Replaced thw whole thermostat housing. Dodged the big one. Time to sell before cassettes blow..
Saw coolant dripping in the valley. This one sounds ok to me. Wonder if she had the same problem?
haha im watching more of your old videos. Almost every one, including this one, right at the beginning, your deep breath and face says "ok here we go again" (lets just get the day over with)
probably because it's a Ford LOL
You know people are miserable with there existence in life and what makes them feel better let's make someone else feel that way. That's you BAD DRIVERS OF TEXAS! SAD LITTLE HUMAN ITS OK STRAWBERRY IT WILL GET BETTER LOL
its the thermostat and plastic housing head gaskets are not a problem on these motors these motors run 200 350k no problem
this one bucks the trend then...trust me, I wish it was the thermostat!
Had a crown vic that behaved exactly like this ford man even the 4.6 occasionally spits head gaskets
Hate when a car gives you the run-around
Have to pull the motor to work on any of this stuff.
By the synthoms there is air on the water circuit. That's all.
Really sux ,,,that you told her.its probaly no big deal. Every new TECH and employee can learn from this video. Do say a word until the FULL DIAGNOSIS is COMPLETE!!!!
Low Coolant From Leak/Evaporation. When Coolant That Remains In System Circulates It Cools Down Until It Returns To Engine…
#CheckLevels #FordSportTracCoolantLeaksLikeaSieve
#ThermostatHousingASSEMBLYNotorious
I would go after the thermostat
that tester works for me, its fast and it it turns yellow its accurate
Ooh the suspense.
