what really stood out for me was Adam doing his crying harmonica. That just put the icing on the cake for me
This is one of my favorites of their originals, it's beautiful and poignant and even if you are not from the south you can feel the emotion.
I said the same thing when this came out.😂 I've lived in the northwest all my life, but this brought a tear to my eye .😢
This video was filmed outside of Denver, Colorado. Chris Chatham on guitar and o member from Texas Hill were the other 2 co-writers of this song.. yes Chris played guitar on the My Maria song. I love this simple straight forward original country ballad..They were able to infuse emotional in the song without being overbering. Sorry I have been able to comment to your reactions lately but will do better in the future. Glad you and your family got though the hardship you went through earlier this year. This was intended to be complete a capella. They normally arrange with instruments and then take them out for the final arrangement. This time, they liked Chris' guitar when they were arranging they decided to keep it in the final version.
Chris Chatham, a frequent collaborator with both Tim & Austin, is on the guitar. The lyrics came out of a tour bus discussion among the three who grew up in Southern states. You can hear "Dixie" in all of their voices. But, they all have grown beyond the attitudes they grew up with. Tim has had some really interesting discussion about how his worldviews have changed as they have seen more of the world on his social medial lately.
Almost every reaction comment section devolves into complaints about Chance's verse. This comes from their hearts. They can love where they're from and recognize that it isn't home any longer.
Adam Rupp's no-monica is as strong as ever.

As a Southerner myself, this song epitomizes my own journey over nearly70 years. I cried the first time I heard it.
Another great original song! This is such a beautiful heartfelt melancholy song. Tim's lead was awesome along with all the guy's harmonies & Adam's harmonica sounds were great as usual. I don't mind having an instrument played once in awhile in a song. It was tastefully done in the background without taking over. It added a nice element. Also like the scenery in Colorado. I can't understand why some commenters have been really negative about the lyrics. They are truthful in saying that some of the south's past may not be pleasant but not all of it is. Our background & upbringing still makes us the person we are.

Love this! It should be up for a Grammy (to me). You are correct, that is Chris Chatham on guitar (one of Tim’s best friends) and he was in My Maria. I saw them perform this outside of Pittsburgh (where Chris and I are from) and Chris was there playing. Adam did the soulful harmonica and Austin played the shaker (I don’t know the name of that instrument). It was so good….I had a tear. I think you interpreted it right. Tim said it’s more that he had to leave Texas behind and move to Nashville for music and it was hard to leave his hometown. Three of the boys had to move to either L.A. (Chance) or Nashville (Austin and Tim) for music. I left Pittsburgh for my husband’s job and I miss it…still. Good one Cole!

I forgot to say that Dive Bar Saints and the So Long Dixie album are full of originals. So Long Dixie has 12 originals on it. The boys have been writing a lot of good songs. I love Dive Bar Saints, Save the World (with piano in it), Give Me a Sign and So Long Dixie the best.
A fellow Southerner here! I love this song very much! It’s one of my favorites on the same titled album! So happy Chis Chatham played guitar in this one! It’s perfect accompaniment along with Rupp’s no-monica sounds, and tastefully done! That shaker sound at the beginning had to have been Rupp, too. If you want some more originals, check out more from this album, and their first independent label album called Dive Bar Saints. The title track includes a solid solo by Chance. His voice lends well to that song! There are many great songs on it and hope you check them out!

IMO, "Dixie," in this case, can stand for any time or place. We are products of our raising, but we can learn from the mistakes of the past and do better. It's an ode to be proud of the good and to walk away from the bad. I have yet to find anything questionable about the lyrics other than the hot topic button word "Dixie."

I love Home Free, I love this song. You can't erase history no matter how hard everyone tries in this day and time. To be better than where you came from you have to remember where you have been. When you take down monuments and try to erase the history, there is no way to remember what happened and what you don't want to repeat. It's never been about being politically correct. One day this woke generation will wake up a realize they made a huge mistake. I NEVER took the monuments and remembrances as a slap in the face of the results of the Civil War. To acknowledge that any type of oppression of people is wrong is enough. Still, it's being done differently now. Now we accuse people 30 years later of their wrong doings. We slander those that say things that aren't politically correct, we terrorize those that still think differently, So how does taking down all the monuments in the south change things? To buy into this is crap and most people get that. Sadly no one speaks up or does anything about it. So today it's the narrative that the USA lives with. I no longer live in the USA because of this type of negativity and cancel culture. I live in Belgium and have for 10 years now, where they haven't even tried. Memory is why the past isn't repeated.

Beautiful poignant original.
Too often instrumentation overwhelms the vocals, one reason I love a capella, but Chris's guitar is not overly "there".
During a writing session, Adam Wakefield said he wanted to write a song called "So Long Dixie" but he could never get anyone to write it with him. Tim and Austin took the bait and ran with it. Tim, Austin, and Chance all had to literally leave the deep south to follow their music, that's where the beginning of the song was. And, yes, there are things that should stay in the past - both with the region and within each of us (to paraphrase Austin). But overall, this was a love song to a region.
It's a great song but I hate seeing people pick at a scab that has been healing to almost a scar.
