  • Hello there my artsy friends. In this video we are going to take a look at Artist Loft Color Pencils. As many of you already know Artist Loft is a craft brand, and is the house brand for Michael's. I decided to buy and review these pencils after experiencing the Artist Loft watercolor pencils, and watercolor paints. I am actually a fan of the watercolor pencils as far a craft brands go; although, I am not the biggest fan of the watercolor paints. Unfortunately, the same holds true for the color pencils. My experience with these pencils was far from the best. So many things went wrong from the beginning. After the purchase of the complete 72 color range, I got home only to discover that I had 70 colors. There was 72 pencils, but only 70 colors. 2 pencils were duplicates. The brown, and the dark blue. I did reach out to Michael's via Facebook. After sending them the reported issue, and copy of the receipt I was told I would be contacted concerning the matter. That was months ago, and I have yet to hear anything from Michael's at all. It is actually a very disappointing situation considering how much I shop at Michael's.
I normally go through listing the pros and cons of the products I am reviewing in the video description of the review. However, I just didn't see the need for this product. The review video is pretty straight forward and to the point.
    Interested in the pencils:

With all said and done, I really don't recommend these pencils in all honesty. For the price point of 35.99 for the pencils, I believe there are much better brands available at the same price or better. Although they are not the worst product I have ever used; I don't see one believing they are truly getting their money worth out of this product.

Thank you very much for this video. I've been struggling with this pencil set for about a year now, and it's been really demoralizing, because it never occurred to me that the pencils themselves might be holding me back. I originally bought them to replace my starting crayola set, and really only grabbed them because they were one of the cheaper options, and well, I'm a broke college student.
They worked well enough at first, and I think you're right that they're a decent beginner set (definetly better than crayola), but not much more than that.
The only reason I ended up suspecting something was wrong was because I later obtained a single prismacolor pencil (due to the fact that you can't buy singles of these, and I use a looooooot of black in my drawings), and the difference between it an the old black pencil was frankly astonishing.
I know you said that you weren't exactly comfortable doing negative reviews, but I think sometimes, just pointing out when a cheap brand is mediocre is important. I think you were as fair to the pencils as you could be, and your honesty on your biases towards them were clear.
Overall, good video. Subscribing for sure.

Thank you very much for commenting. Yes yes the struggle is real with these pencils. I agree a little better than Crayola, but definitely not that much. I am glad you think the review was fair. I try not to product bash, but these pencils just had me in that head space. Thanks for subscribing. I hope you enjoy the upcoming content.

I wish I watched this before I got the pencils. I totally agree with you! I wish I spent more and got more prismas.

I am sorry you had to experience these. Although I am a huge fan of budget friendly good quality products; these just do not cut it. However, I will say that all Artist Loft products are not bad. They do have a few hits, but more misses.

Good review. I purchased their Fundamentals watercolor pencils and wasnt too impressed. There is another watercolor pencil that Michael's sells in a hard clear plastic box that costs twice as much as the Fundamentals but is twice as bad. I ended up throwing them in the trash.

I was actually able to get the watercolor pencils to work pretty well every time I use them. However, the paints and color pencils.......not my fav at all.

Hello and thank you so much for your comment. I wasn’t able to get the missing pencils. However, they did finally provide me with store credits to help towards the purchase of other products.

Yes I have to agree. The ones I tried just weren't the best. Since this video I have learned that they offer a two different series of art products. They have a series 1 (studio), and a series 2 (artist). The set I reviewed evidently were from the series 1 line. I think I am going to purchase and test the series 2 pencils just to compare the quality.

@@KarolinaBernolak if you can, grab a prismacolor white and black to go with the set. It will round the out and help with shadows and highlights. Adding those two to the set helped me round them out.

Michaels has them in open stock I am glad I bought only 2 because I agree a waste of money which I told the manager of my Michaels but of course she can not do anything about I told her that it is a shame that they discontinued there Artist pencils like Lyra and Koh-I-boor love this video because I thought I was the only one who didn’t like them

I am glad you found the channel as well. Welcome!! Yes my experience with Artist Loft Anything has been less then great. The fundamental watercolor paints are okay but nothing to write home about. Of the budget color pencils I have tried KingArt Pro Color pencils are a much better choice. Right now my Arteza Expert color pencils hold the number one spot from the sets I own. Wellll of course I love my prismacolor.

Can you buy individual artists loft pencils from Michaels?

    • @thethriftyapprentice
      @thethriftyapprentice  2 года назад +1

Not that I am aware of. Although you would think one should be able to do to it being Michael’s house brand. However, the sets are so economical priced that it wouldn’t break a person pocket. Right now Michael’s has a 20% coupon so it’s a good time to purchase them if they interest you.

I recently bought the same pencils but a 24 set. The price was 18.99. (too much but I had a 5.00 off coupon). I've enjoyed using them and I actually like the waxy finish that it gives. I think they are nicely pigmented. I only real complaint is that my magenta doesn't look like magenta to me. That makes me mad because I love magenta. I'm not experienced with color pencils, so I don't have much to compare them to. I think the price is too high though and you got the big set so I know why you are frustrated. I wonder why you just didn't return them and get another set since they gave you 2 duplicates.

It thought of returning them. To be honest I just didn’t like them enough to go through the trouble. I gifted them to a new color pencil artist to practice with until they could get a better set. They are terrible, but there are many other pencils of better quality on the market. Mind you at a much cheaper price.
