Opera for Peace: A master class for diversity in the arts

- By inviting singers from around the world, the non-profit Opera for Peace hopes to develop greater diversity among performers of opera, and to inspire the next generation of opera audiences. Correspondent Seth Doane talks with African American singer Hannah Jeané Jones, who traveled to Rome to participate in the program; and with soprano Forooz Razavi, who sang with an R&B group in Iran before she fell in love with opera.

Amazing work by the foundation , as a young Soprano I think it is very important to acknowledge that Opera is a beautiful and empowering way of delivering a message through the voice and acting , it is timeless… 🎭 . May this form of art continue to grow :) .
I was named Carmen after Carmen de Lavallade❣️ can’t dance but I sing. The opera singers I could hear thru the walls at my vocal coach gave me chills! Such strength
I am, yes, white, but poor all my life. But raised on classical music, including opera, from pre-birth. I learned all of the Ring cycle by 8. I grew up with Lakmé, La Bohème, La Traviata, Carmen, Les Contes d' Hoffmann. Maria Callas was my favourite soprano. I named my rescued Bombay cat after her. I was never racist because I learned to love all colours of skin before anyone told me about racism. Same for LGBTQ +. This singer is superb. Thank you e Grazie Miglia.

Robert Peter Guillaume made history in 1990 as the first African-American performer to play the title role in The Phantom of the Opera when he took over from Michael Crawford in the Los Angeles production in 1990.
It was an unforgettable performance 👏 ❤
I saw Robert Guillaume in 1969 perform in Jacques Brel is alive & well living in Paris. Absolutely blown away. Masterful voice.

Opera is great. Santa Fe Opera still good despite reverb from the interstate thanks to nearby Native casino. Hopefully Angie Jolie Callas movie will interest more kids in the form ❤

This seems like a great program but...
What is totally forgotten in this video is that in my own generation opera stages had a very strong presence of people of color going back to Marian Anderson and then on to people like Leontyne Price, Martina Arroyo, Shirley Verrett, Grace Bumbry, Reri Grist Jessye Norman, George Shirley, Florence Quivar, Simon Estes, Bette Allen, Barbara Hendricks, Gwendolyn Killebrew, Leona Mitchell, Vinson Cole, William Warfield, etc.
These were not "also ran" artists! They were top name artists singing in all the major music centers of the world and with the best opera companies, orchestras, conductors and, in some cases, made dozens of recordings.
Please do not forget the past!
You dishonor these great and in some cases legendary singers!

@@yvonneplant9434 I was lucky; I heard many of these great singers in person. I hate to say it but I have not heard anyone in this present generation that measures up to any of these brilliant artists. But I hopeful for the future.
Yes, you are absolutely right. However, the key words here are “in my own generation.” I, too, am from that generation where major platforms featured opera singers who were African-American and dominant in opera. My daughter was speaking about HER generation where the major platforms do not feature opera singers of any kind. She is very much aware of Norman, Graves, Price, Battles and current amazing opera singers but again, The Grammys, AMAs and other formats do not feature them prime time. She did not see an African-American opera singer in person until she saw Norman Lewis in that role. I’m super proud of this girl and very thankful for @TheDenyceGravesFoundation and @OperaforPeace for intentionally doing the work to ensure that this absence does not continue. I see great things in store for her and for all of the singers in these programs.

I believe as Beverly Sills did that you don’t have to go to Europe or Italy to study. America has very good Academies and conservatories to train young singers.
The US has such wonderful institutions, but nothing can substitute actually going to Italy or France to feel and experience the land of Puccini, Verdi, Bizet... These experiences are so amazing for the artists

Opera was more like a pop entertainment 200 years ago. It wasn't high brow at all. So maybe people today will learn how to enjoy it that way again.
This segment, while aiming toward a worthy goal, is so off-base, it’s hard to know where to begin. The “Italian Opera” narrative begins with Carmen, a French opera that takes place in Spain! Then, where have these young people been? Have they ever heard the names Leontyne Price, Simon Estes, Shirley Verrett, Grace Bumbry, Jessye Norman? And on today’s Met stage, you have Pretty Yende, Nadine Sierra, Ryan Speedo Green, et al - all singers of color in star roles. I don’t think the problem is the people onstage; the audience just doesn’t include many POC. Maybe they prefer other music.
Maybe not. If they aren't exposed to it, how would they know? It is our position to teach of the great people that you wrote on.

She was reflecting from when she was a child in middle school, in love with opera but not seeing African-Americans in mainstream media performing. She’s very well aware of countless opera singers who are African-American as well as the greats such as Anderson, Norman, Price and Denyce Graves in whose foundation, Hannah is a member. ❤
